He spoke fluent Mandarin, wore traditional Chinese clothing, used a Chinese name, discussed Chinese culture online and openly presented himself as someone who loved China. His popularity, however, eventually became inseparable from a much more controversial part of his online persona: his alleged sexual relationships with large numbers of Chinese women.

The controversy surrounding him raises uncomfortable questions about attraction, race, nationality, social media, privilege and what researchers have described as sexual capital.

From foreigner to internet personality

The influencer, commonly identified online as Jackson and associated with the Chinese name Wang Shenyu, built an audience partly through his ability to navigate Chinese society.

Unlike the stereotypical foreigner struggling with basic Mandarin, he presented himself as deeply immersed in the language and culture. He appeared comfortable wearing hanfu, discussing Chinese traditions and interacting with Chinese people.

That identity became part of his appeal.

According to accounts circulating online, his dating strategy often began innocently enough: meeting women, practising Chinese with them, going for food and building rapport. Some encounters allegedly progressed to private meetings at his apartment, where he would supposedly teach calligraphy or continue conversations.
The allegations become considerably darker after that point.

Several women reportedly accused him of treating relationships as disposable encounters. Some alleged that after having sex, they were effectively pushed out of his life. Others claimed that he had removed or blocked them from social media.
The most serious accusations involved contraception and pregnancy.

The stealthing allegation

One of the most serious allegations concerned stealthing: secretly removing a condom during sex without the other person's consent.
The issue is particularly complicated because laws surrounding stealthing differ between jurisdictions, and legal recognition does not necessarily match the seriousness with which victims describe the experience.
In this case, the allegation became part of a much wider online backlash.

Critics argued that whatever someone's nationality or dating preferences, removing contraception without consent fundamentally changes the conditions under which sexual consent was given.

Other allegations involved pregnancies.

Some women reportedly claimed they became pregnant after encounters with him and were subsequently blocked or pressured to deal with the consequences themselves. There were also allegations that he encouraged or pressured women towards abortion.

Why Chinese men became angry

Chinese men online reacted angrily to the idea that a foreign man could arrive in China, attract women and seemingly operate according to rules that they believed would not be available to Chinese men.

That anger was connected to broader debates about dating, marriage, wealth and China's changing gender expectations.

Online, perception can become reality simply through repetition.

Then the attention changed

As criticism intensified, parts of his online presence reportedly disappeared or became private.
That shift added another layer to the controversy.

What had initially looked like the story of an unusually successful foreign influencer in China became a debate about consent, privilege, cultural stereotypes, gender relations and the economics of online attention.

The story also demonstrates why viral personalities should not be judged solely by the image they construct for an audience.

Behind the videos and photographs are real people, real relationships and, in the most serious allegations, potentially serious consequences.

At the same time, those allegations need to be distinguished from verified facts.

The bigger question

The most interesting part of this controversy is ultimately not how many women the influencer allegedly slept with.

It is why his particular combination of identity, nationality, language, appearance and online persona appeared to generate so much attention in the first place.

His story illustrates how attraction can be shaped by environment and social perception. Being foreign can make someone novel. Speaking the local language can make that person appear more accessible. Demonstrating cultural knowledge can create credibility. Social media can then amplify all of it.

But the same system that creates celebrity can also magnify allegations, distort reputations and turn complicated relationships into simplified internet narratives.
