pak:
I have a car with a 3.0L engine. though the fuel consumption has always been on the high side,

however of recent, the fuel consumption has shot to the roof.

It now guzzles fuel like no man's business.

I've had to service the car, the mechanic requested that the spark plugs be changed, which I did.

But the situation hasn't improved considerably.

Now the mech is suggesting I change/service the fuel injector and the exhaust.

Please, I wish i can get expert advice on this cos am quite scared of this trial and error method from Nigerian Mechs.

What do you think caused this and what are the suggestion as regards resolving the problem.

By the way, the car is a Honda Accord EOD 2003 model
There is what is called ''Biscuit'' in car silenser.
It's normaly white in colour. If you see it from a little distance, it would look like garri.
When that thing is removed from your silenser, it would never stop consuming fuel.
The only solution is for you to change the silenser completely since the biscuit can never be replaced.
The biscuit is usually in the middle of the silenser.

Your car may be overheating.
First thing you should do is: take the radiator for thourogh washing, may be the radiator is dirty. After the washing, emty two can of radiator coolant in the radiator, if it did not stop, you need to change the top gasket. It dosnt cost much.

Hi guys, I have a SAAB 95{Eco power, direct ignition}, when ever the AC is turned on, it drags the engine hence the car struggles to move and it consumes a lot of fuel even without the AC turned on. Can anyone kindly advice because I so love that car and do not want it to park up? Thanks.....

Any form of leakage in the exhaust or effusion system could lead to skyrocketted fuel consumption.

Check for leakages on your radiator and check if ur radiator cap is tightly fit. Your car might be over heating. You can also steam wash your engine and radiator. ( a radiotor flush should be fine) Note: if your car is sound. There is no reason why any 'liquid' should keep dropping. be it your engine oil, radiator coolant, Atf break oil etc.As a matter of fact you are not meant to open your radiator cap for any reason except in the case of over heating. If you have to refill any of this often...something is wrong.

Siena: Things that can make a car thirstier than normal:

01) Dirty / clogged air filter.
02) Incorrect ignition timing. *
03) Under-inflated tyres (higher rolling resistance).
04) Binding brakes.
05) Leaking fuel injectors.
06) Blowing exhaust system.
07) Faulty MAF (mass air flow meter).*
08) Faulty CTS (coolant temperature switch).*
08) Faulty o2 sensor (Lambda).*
09) Thermostat stuck open, or removed by some dodgy mechanic. Over cooled engine.
10) Split / perished vacuum hoses, engine drawing in unmetered air.*

I would suggest an OBD scan, your '03 Honda Accord is fully OBD II compliant. All the items marked with an asterisk will normally trigger an engine check light (CEL). It would help too, if you can recall when you noticed the higher than normal fuel consumption. Did it occur after any work was carried out on the car? The thermostat is an area I would look into - if it's stuck open (or it's been removed) the engine will never reach its optimum operating temperature. The CTS will sense the engine is not hot, and the ECU will send more fuel through the injectors as a result. This is done by altering the duty cycle (the amount of time the injectors are held open will be longer).

Tyre pressures are also important, if the pressures are too low, the rolling resistance will place more load on the transmission, then the engine will work harder. The same goes for brakes that are binding (sticking on).

Omo good post but guy ur username is very funny oh....

Chynx: Nice one Siena. You ar too good!
Kindly advise me on this issue:
My car (Nissan Altima 2.5s 2002 model) no longer accelerates as usual. When driving normally, it always drags when I try to move faster except I step hard on d gas pedal then I get this roar and subsequent surge 4wrd with serious muscle.
I have serviced d injector, changed d fuel pump and washed d fuel filters, yet no improvement has been noticed. In addition, my car no swallows fuel more than I gozzle beer. Your professional advice will be very much welcome.

2ndly, I have always suffered dis noise from d front legs each time t drive on rough surfaces like inter-locking tiles. I have changed my 4 shock absorbers, lower arms and thyroids and painfully, d noise hasnt stopped.

Please help me out on this.
My email is c4mine@yahoo.com
May God bless u.

Siena boss, pls can u explain the cause of this case and its possible solution. This is an intersting condition and I will like to view your professional advise on this.
Thanks boss.

Service the injector
Check for exhaust leakage
most importantly, check the airflow system of the vehicle.

Dear siena, pls I need your help on this issue too.
I drive a toyota rav 4 98 model, it drinks fuel like a duck fowl drinks water in the dry season. I complained to my mechanic, he claimed the air-flow metre is bad, I bought a new one yet the problem still exist up till today.
Using public transport I pay just 200 naira to go to church and come back, but if I use my car I must buy fuel for 1000 naira for that distance and by the time I am coming back my metre will already be warning me of low fuel.
Please what do I do?

I experienced exactly almost same wiv ma EOD 03 too, a friend adviced i change d exhaust, and on getting 2 my panel we discovered d catalyst had burnt or probably not even there at all . This was exactly what caused the outrageous fuel consumption. The guy opened it up and added some iron netlike kit inside it. Lo nd behold the consumption stop instantly. Try this bro it mite work 4u. My car is sound now , i nor dey sweat inside a.c. again d fuel consumption almost give me stroke.

Interesting thread.
Re: What Causes A Car To Start Consuming Fuel Excessively by pak: 5:55am On Dec 07, 2013
Thanks you'all, the problems have since been solved.
For posterity, they were :
1. Using bigger tyres than the recommended size, as stated below
2. My Mechs put water inside the radiator instead of coolant after servicing, leading to the engine operating at a higher temperature than normal.
Good thing is the car is still on the road, still ran around town with it today.

And you omitted Weak Engine Oil! What kind of Mechanical Engineer u be sef? Don't you know that weak or bad oil can stiff the engine which will make it to consume fuel cuz is struggling to work?

NOTES 2013
Alleluya ! My two year old thread finally made frontpage.
Though, I've gotten another car anyway (a second alleluya, pls)
and it seems oga Sienna is no longer following the thread.

For Posterity sake, the two problems I had was
1. Using bigger tyres than the recommended size, as stated below
2. My Mechs put water inside the radiator instead of coolant after servicing, leading to the engine operating at a higher temperature than normal.
Good thing is the car is still on the road, still ran around town with it today.

@Siena please come to my aid.

I just received my toyota camry 2001 Le from my brother in the states which passed inspection before he shipped it to US.
I have driven it for just one month though not regular for this period but i noticed their is a high fuel consumption since i visited the mechanic to carry out the following work.

1.I raised the shocks bc the car is very low.

2. I changed the oil with Mobil XHP engine oil/filter

3. I filled the radiator reserve can with water

4. Carried out wheel alighnment after shock lift.

Please advice me this is damn much compare to before.

Thank you

Please I need your informed advice.
I drive Honda Accord 2003 4cyclinder engine.
I have being hearing this loud noise from inside the hood at the passenger's side. It usually becomes louder when I engage any of the gears & also when I switch on AC. I have replaced the engine seats still it has not stopped. Pls what can cause this & what should I do.
My mechanic seems not to have solution to it. He said I should buy Oil Treatment & use in the engine buy I am not convinced that that bad Oil can cause such noise.
I stay at Ogba axis of Lagos. If you know any good Automech shop around pls help me with their contacts.
Thanks as I look forward to your responses

Yeah your engine may be old, but if it is not smoking yet i think you can still benefit from a general tune up. Try this:
1) locate your air filter and if dirty replace it with a new one
2) Check your plugs and replace them if necessary with recommended specs.
3) Replace your plug wires if you have never before.
4) since your car is so old, and you are using injectors, servicing the injwctors can only be good.
5) lastly check your exhaust, they all get clogged over time.
