Most fairy tales told by my grand dad were mostly about the tortoise, how smart he was.

Grandpa pls tell me a story.............

Grand dad: Story story......

Me: Story tell lies

Grand dad: Once upon a time, there lived a tortoise in the animal kingdom.........................................blabla bla bla...................
"And that was how the tortoise got his back cracked"

Me: Grandpa u can lie oooooooo grin

Edited: there was this famous story he used to tell me about how dangerous it is to keep late night. He always believed that a man should be at home by 6pm max, that anything ur looking for beyond that time isn't worth it, leave it for the next day.
Twas a story of how he got chased by an OJUJU cheesy abi na masquerade self, he went to check his babe then with his friend, and they were coming back at dawn after sunset, den they monster accosted them, he was the smaller one and his friend had long legs, they took to their heels and they met a big ditch in front of them, his friend crossed it on one attemtp, while he was panting and scared his legs won't be long enough, but on his first attempt he crossed and that was how they escaped and ditched that monster cheesy. According to him it was God that helped him cross that ditch so he can learn a lesson that staying out late was bad, and also to be able to be alive to tell his grand children about the dangers of keeping late night.

Little did he knew that his grand son (Me) will turn out to be Nocturnal cheesy. His generation is diff from ours.

His story didn't stopped me from staying out beyond 6pm sha

Wasn't close with my grandparents. Paternal grandparents died before I turned 3, my maternal grandma had a stroke when I was born so she couldn't talk and grandpa was mostly in church.

Got no stories from em. Got a lotta tortoise stories from my parents though, but mostly songs. There was this one in Igbo:

Ochicha n'oke no n'ime motor
Oke bu driver
Ochicha bulu passenger ne se cigar (sneeze)

Translation:
A cockroach and a rat were in a car
The rat was the driver
The cockroach picked a passenger smoking cigarette. (Sneeze)

Dunno if anyone else is familiar with the song

Fairy stories are formulated based on the expectant behavior of children. While majority of them are meant to entertain. Stubborn children are always told scary stories to scare them with resultant of good reward should the person cHange to good.

My Grandmum told me a story of how they found a very good househelp for my uncle while he was a baby who always managed to get him to sleep instantly every night when nobody could. They later discovered that she always soaked a cloth in ogogoro and held it near his face.

During our time no be fairy tale dem de call am o ,na STORY; although I grew up not knowing any of my grand parent (may their souls RIP)but my parent especially mum always narrate some interesting piece for us then, and the stories always ends wit one food for thought or the other like that is y “goat lives among human", “the tortoise have a broken shell" etc and finally every one must say one or two thing he or she learnt from her story. Chai, those good old days. Now nko,Nickelodeon has taken over.

Tortoise and some other animals went to have a meeting in the sky n before they left Tortoie told his friends that when they get there his name would be "all of u" so they agreed to call him that. when they got there they were all offered food and drinks saying its for "all of u" so oga Tortoise ate n drank them all since its his name.....they eventually got angry and threw him down from the sky THAT WAS HOW HE CRACKED HIS BACK

Hian. I was an English speaking child, and my grandparents were Igbo speaking folks. Neither of us could understand the other undecided
Unless ofcourse you consider 'bia' and 'kedu' fairytales tongue

Ok. I remember one Christmas when we visited the village. I was sitting at the backyard with my grandma and she kept talking and talking and talking; me i was in siddon look mode.
Then my aunt came out and asked her what she was doing and she said, "I'm just talking to Uju". The woman laughed eh, "How can you be talking to someone who doesn't know what you're saying" grin

Anyway I learnt Igbo by force, but the woman was dead before I could have an actual conversation with her. God rest her soul sad

I really don't know if i'd classify this as a fairytale or not. My granny always tells me not to go out once its close to 7pm as ghosts and even witches and wizards walk around the earth.

I always laugh hearing this anyway, some stories i hear sometimes aint plausible.

hmmm,my mum told me there was a particular man back then in the village.. he takes delight having his bath in the river late at night ignoring several warnings about d dangers involved. then one night the man ran n.aked into the village breathing heavily and when he finally mustered a word, he said as he was about having his bath, d river turned into a giant demonic structure and beckoned on him to move closer.. he didn't and ran into d village, he later ran mad after sometime.
