Chux6203: Maggots are an excellent protein and fat source. Commonly called maggot meal, has almost all the components found in fish meal but with a higher fat content. In fact research has been done on its partial/total replacement of fishmeal in fish diet in Nigeria. But of note is the question of how many kg you can produce per volume of poultry waste (or offals) and how to manage the smell that follows the maggot production. And finally, how often you have to drain your pond water if not an earthen pond.

Still, they are a good feed for fish and can alternate with foreign and other local feeds.

To generate required quantity of maggots for your fish, collect enough animal/meat offals into several drums if possible daily. If you are using poultry waste collect enough waste. Harvest the maggots first thing in the mornings or after sunset. Cover the poultry/animal waste properly the way you cover a pit toilet leaving on a small opening for flies to enter. That way you eliminate the smell

opes: the pond odour can be prevented by using PROBIOTICS. I was using chicken manure to indirectly feed my fish and also using it to fertilize my pond water because i used the pond water to culture duckweed. in two of my ponds, i used fresh chicken manure so odour is expected. it will be tedious changing the water regularly, but you have no option than to change and replace the pond water by at least 20% so that your fish quality will not be affected by the odour. though my production is not for commercial purpose, rather a livelihood project and training for local farmers.
..
Hey! Where do you get those duckweeds? I've been looking for it.

Good day Nairalanders,
I am an entrepreneur and just acquired a plot of Land which I intend using for a commercial fish farming venture. I have no knowledge/experience on fish farming and that's why I really would appreciate your contributions on how I can go about it. Some information I may need at the moment are;
1. Best possible size of the concrete pond that can house up to 1000 Juvenile to table size.
2. Best way to disinfect the pond so that the fish will not be affected.
3.The water PH that will be suitable or will aid the survival of the juvinile.

I can be contacted via email on : obibros4luv2007@yahoo.com

Some people use it to feed fish, particularly tilapia and pangasius, better when dried

I've been following this for a while and i never knew people will see it from the Angle I'm also looking at it , I was about to call this Poster when i first read the Post but i don't just feel like despite the Fact that i know personally that it a big LIE, Actually, I don't really know how much its will cost to raise 1000 pieces of Catfish But I'm having 1000 pieces right now.i stock them on the 26th of November 2011, so as I'm writing right now, they are a month Old yesterday and all i noticed was that they Have Consumed 3 Bags Of 3mm Coppens throughout the first Month. I just opened up the Forth and 5th Bag , I sorted them into 500 /500 in 2 ponds and the first 500 are about to start eating 4mm Today while the other 500 in the Second Pond have Started eating 6mm Yesterday. I'm very Happy to see them Growing Faster than i think. I haven't weigh them Yet. but they are Getting Bigger. The Coppens Cost me 4900 per-bag, I don't know about the Cost in other location cos my Farm is in my House ( AKUTE, OLAMBE) Then i Feed them 3 Times in a Day. So if anyone want any details , U are free to ask me here , I dont have anything to Sell to anyone, Just need to let people my Progress. And www.Nairaland.com has been really helping me so far. I THANK GOD

is there a number i can reach you on brov
