OPINION I'm neither in support nor am I really in opposition to the court's verdict on this issue. My reason being every "human law" is error-bound-- Don't be surprise if this same case is won at the court of appeal (i.e the ban being lifted). It all depends on the perspective of the Judge handling the case (and ofcourse the counsels involved). But the following is important... Why would the case get to court in the 1st place? Why and how was the ban (on Hijab) placed in the 1st instance? Is the use of this Hijab a new thing in these schools? I mean did they just start wearing it? Was the ban placed immediately the usage started? Or the "authority" just woke one day and said: there has to be an end to this? We can keep asking these questions, keep giving different views and opinion, keep arguing on & on & on till thy kingdom come. We'll still not arrive at a conclusion. No way forward. But I blame all of these on two things: INTOLERANCE AND IGNORANCE of the average Nigerian. ***TOLERANCE If TOLERANCE does exist in the system, the use of Hijab won't be a problem in the 1st place, Bcuz I personal believe its not hindering any non- muslim from sticking to his/her belief. #NoHarmCaused And if we wanna talk uniformity among the students, the government could just say: OK, u wanna wear Hijab, fine, but the color of ur Hijab must not differ from the school uniform. This alone will do the magic and peace will reign. #NoOneIsLosing. ***IGNORANCE We all hear this quote a lot. "If you want to hide something from a Black man, put it in writing (or in a book )". We Nigerians (myself inclusive) are too lazy to read. We are not ready to learn new things. We listen to answer & not to understand. We are too quick to criticize. We are too SENTIMENTal. We are not ready to know the TRUE teachings of other religion or belief. I read some comments above and I wonder if some people actually know anything about Islam. They Judge Islam based on what a muslim (by name & not by character) does... We know very little, yet we argue (blindly) a lot. The worst part is, we call others ignorant when it actually is what we are. *My advice to Muslims: Please try and "show" the world what are the TRUE teachings of Islam. Some muslims (by name) hardly pray the five obligatory prayers, they know very little (or nothing) about Islam, yet when issues like this comes up, they wanna make (blind) arguments. They claim to be muslims. CONCLUSION The only way forward is to learn how to TOLERATE others-- Every religion (that I know of) teaches this. It will do this Nation a great help. We should always be neutral in our dealings with others and have in-depth knowledge of both our religion and that of others, this will not only reduce un-necessary argument (& insults) but bring peace to all parties. I rest my case... #peace 3 Likes 2 Shares |

BetaThings: Not dragging issues here. I don't comment on religious matters but maybe because I got 14 likes (maybe the highest since I got on NL). Yeah I don't know now but in the early 80s when I was in elementary schools, Christians and Muslem pupils had different classes for their religious subjects. Secondly, I know parents that send their children to schools at a far distance from their home for religion reasons. People go to work on Saturdays and Sundays; it's a matter of choice. If you need the job, you take it. While organisations observe not less than 2 hrs break on Friday for Muslim brethren to pray, they as well allow Christians to hold their fellowship as well. Nobody can deprive a man of his belief. If we look at this issue critically, we've got no issue about living together peacefully if we could realize we're first human being, made alike. In short, that we met religion on earth and we'll leave it right here. We've been highly religious tolerant set of people until foreign influences set in. This is true from the days of Moses, the days of Jihad to this dispensation when we lord religion over one another and mix religion with every other issues including politics. |

maylisa: Sorry o, but this very popular saying about Northern Muslims not seeing Yoruba Muslims as real muslims is just plain silly, let them see me as they please (assuming you assertion is true) who cares how others see me, as long as Allah that we all claim to worship sees me as a true muslim, i could care less what Saudis see me as...back to topic though, i am a muslim, proudly so too, but in this case common sense should prevail, even though i would have loved these muslims girls to be able to put on their hijab when and wherever they want, one cannot fault the judge on this, she's right...and to the bigots on here, i'm sure some of y'all are close to having an orgasm already, an opportunity to continue to bash islam and muslims alike, but remember, the governor and dare i say, Majority of "Lagosians" (ibile, bibi inu ilu eko) are muslims too |

4har5y: You don't need all this epistle to try to look more intelligent than you are. Stop trying to be smart. If nobody loses anything from wearing Hijab to public schools, no one will lose anything if it's banned. Your daughters don't spend the whole day in school.. 8hours of not wearing Hijab won't kill them or make them unholy. If you have in depth knowledge of Islam, u should have simple common sense as well to accept and obey simple laws that won't kill you. They all be talking about the little girls right as if some of these girls are not forced to wear the hijab. Will any of you Muslims allow your daughters to exercise their RIGHTS if they willingly choose not to wear the Hijab? No hijab in public schools just for the period you are within the school premises(8hours). Don't tell us she....t about how the hijab can be made to blend with school uniforms. that's total CRAAP! |

Re: Court Upholds Ban On Use Of Hijab In Lagos Public Schools by salykely(m): 10:05am On Oct 19, 2014 |
The Lagos state high court hijab judgment is an aberration of section 38 of the 1999 constitution. And i entertain no doubt that the apex Court will over turn today's aberration. Section 38 (1) Every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom (either alone or in community with others, and in public or in private) to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance. I wonder if the Lagos state government is more secular than the United state whose president proudly made the following claim: "Moreover, freedom in America is indivisible from the freedom to practice one's religion...That's why the United States government has gone to court to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab and to punish those who would deny it. it is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practicing religion as they see fit -- for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear. We can't disguise hostility towards any religion behind the pretence of liberalism. Freedom of religion is central to the ability of peoples to live together. We must always examine the ways in which we protect it". 1 Like |

Onyiido:u made me laugh so bad .... If the govt school could violate the constitution then it is the private school that would defend it ...... As for you claiming it is unnecessary right , it is not your fault but a syndrome of military blindedness which has eroded an average Nigeria the ability to think they have any right !!!
