His age will pose a great difficulty for him to get the visa. I know 2 people (26 years) with undergraduate admissions who were denied at the embassy, how much more 34 years. They went back to the embassy with M.Sc admission and got their visas.

The best thing for him to do will be to reapply for M.Sc instead, if he can, and go to the embassy. He stands a greater chance with M.Sc than B.Sc.

I heard mobile phones in the U.S. are more costlier than their equivalents in Nigeria. Pls, how true is this?

Very much yes. For a phone call plan + internet access, expect to pay, at least, $30 - $50 per month (N5,400 - N9,000). This is for the non-contract plan (i.e buy their sim card only and slot in a phone you already have). It comes with unlimited local calling and texting, unlimited international texting, internet access. For a contract plan (buying a phone + sim card from a network carrier), expect to pay up to $80 per month because you're paying for both the phone + phone access.

Currently, I pay $40 every month (non-contract plan). For my provider, the very lowest you can pay is $25, which is just calling and texting. No internet access.

If I decide to opt for a contract line, how long should it take to pay for the phone? Assume a mid range phone around N40k.

Hello Everyone,
Ok so I have plans to study in the US. And before I go any further, one thing to note in my case is that my husband is a permanent resident of the US. I also want to note that hes' attained this status for only about Six months. We got married at the registry when he visited Nigeria last month and plan to do both traditional and church weddings by his next visit in three months.
I'm(we) just wondering, If I succeed through the admission process of the institution I intend going to... and note in my visa application that my husband is resident in the states, with the conditions I have mentioned above I have a feeling that this would either be good for my application or just kill it.
Please advice me on how to make this work. Your input would be invaluable and of immense help.

Thanks in advance.

shocked Wow, that's pretty expensive. Now, I will value my employer here. For years now I don't know how recharge cards looks like. I have enough data and airtime. I even give out my cloned line for my peeps to call and browse. They will really miss all the freebies. Now I will pay dearly for it.

Even my friends abroad I call them like am making local calls.

Bro, I've actually been doing business off ebay for a while now. All you need is get an unlocked used phone for a very cheap price then get a SIM card.

I can't remember how many phones I've used over the years. If you have a paypal account, search ebay well and bid for phones or buy out straight. Last two month I got a very clean iPhone 5s for 200used. It came with accessories(charger, earpiece, cord). No visible scratch, very clean.

One needs to be very sharp.

It depends on how much you're able to pay per month. You'll check yourself and your monthly earnings to know how much you can pay. The less you pay per month, the longer your payment period is i.e. the longer it takes to pay off the total amount, and the higher you pay per month, the less time it would take for you. Usually, many contract plans last for 2 years, on average. And the good thing is, after sometime of using a particular phone, you can trade in the phone for another one, say a recently released iphone some other phone you like, provided your carrier offers the phone for sale, your payment plan is re-evaluated and a new billing cycle and contract starts. You don't necessarily need to finish paying off one phone first before you can trade it in for another phone. You could always trade it in one-quarter, halfway or three-quarter way into a current contract.

Men, that's some enjoyment galore you got there. You're really going to miss those free calls. Phone plan here isn't like Nigeria's whereby if you don't have money for credit, you can still receive calls and text, at least, you are still connected to the network, and stay in touch with family and friends. Whenever you have money for credit, you recharge and make your calls. For non-contract plans (i.e. data plan, no phone bought from the company) here, once you don't pay for the next month/period, your line is disconnected entirely. You won't be able to make calls and nobody would be able reach you. It's left to you to renew for the next month/period whenever you feel like. You're not obligated to continue. You can change to another carrier if you want. For contract plans (phone + data plan), you are made to sign a contract and are under the contract to keep paying the specified amount of money every new month/period. Defaulting on your contract (not paying) carries heavy consequences.

Na so people for here dey take enjoy different phones of their choice, dey use latest phones as dem dey comot...you go call am correct flexing...you no go sabi say na unto contract plan things. grin

I'd strongly recommend that you come into the US with a phone from home, or even with the phone you're currently using. It's cheaper for you. I've been using my dear old blackberry bold 4 I came with from Nigeria till now. grin If you have an iphone or android phone come along with it. Those are the reigning phones here. You'd literally have to count a 100 people to find one blackberry user here. Don't get carried away by all that 'noise' and 'fanfare' about the flashy but expensive phones these carriers offer for sale. Stay focused in school, know what you came for, in no time, you'd be done with school, get a good job, and then even afford 2 or 3 different phones if you want.

I've seen some students in Nigeria plan to discard their phones to buy one when they come here. Second-hand/third-hand grin phones here are cheap anyway, and you can get good deals from craigslist.

That means telecommunications here is quite cheap. You receive free calls for upto 6months before your line gets disconnected and recycled.

We are really enjoying here. But since I have to pay for Internet where I stay, then I don't think I need to pay for Internet. Just local calls and Sms and am good. Will manage wifi for the moment.

What network is this? On Tmobile(which I signed up with yesterday) the minimum non contract plan is $35 unlimited local calls and Texts. I don't think I've ever paid that high for calls in Naija but the pay as you go plans no make sense so I just went with that option.

I think there might be, but $35 or $25 per month for unlimited local call and texting is quite fair compared to the prepaid options in Naija. When I got here I needed to get a line real quick to be accessible to family and friends and to also negotiate housing with the ads on Craigslist. If u r into navigation(such as google maps) the internet option may come in handy too but on Tmobile all the offers were a bit steep for me. Maybe with time ill find a real bargain which was why I was asking bigfrancis for the network he is using

It's unlimited texting and calling that makes it better. But the 25usd plan would be good.

Check out ultramobile.me. Verify that they cover your area first. they have $19 and $29 unlimited call and text plans that should be enough for anybody that has wifi at home. I have been using their $19 plan together with my school internet and I'm satisfied with it thus far.
also check Lycamobile and Ptel.
