Infact, it has always been seen by me and many others who use it as the exact opposite of Bachelor and the word "bachelor", is not derogatory.

Words do take a different meaning and different conotation over a period of time. Maybe it is time for everyone to stop seeing the word "Spinster" as derogatory but the exact opposite of bachelor.

The opposite of bachelor is bachelorette. Spinster means an old, unmarried woman. It's derogatory.

that's american english. I wans't taught american english in primary school. In our brighter grammar, word and opposite were: bachelor/spinster.

In here and in british english, it is said that the opposite of bachelor is spinster. It is also noted that it didn't have a negative conotation initially.
