barcanista:Like most Buhari supporters you are trying to play smart because you have been found out. You need to differentiate the government from government officials. Buhari didn't talk about the govt (which would have been understandable) but public officials. The point is Buhari doesn't want to be criticized, he doesn't want a very critical press 'wey go put fire for him nyash' |

mikolo80:Brother everything is possible. Go to middle east and Asian countries and see what they ban and we Nigerians take it for granted. Why should a presidential candidate be justifying banning Press at this age. Could u believe that a country cld ban footballers from taking selfies with their female fans? www.ibtimes.co.uk/asian-cup-iranian-footballers-banned-taking-selfies-female-fans-1484248 |

barcanista:You on the contrary are the emotional and partisan one here. What the comment you quoted which you feel lends support to your argument has said is PROSECUTE and not BAN as Buhari wants. Come to think of it can you point me to a link on the al-jazeera's Nigeria ban because I can't remember when it happened. I only remember the Presidency accusing them of trying to destabilize the country, can't remember if a ban followed. Please do help. |

barcanista:Sahara Reporters once accused the petroluem minister Diezani Madueke of owning a $100m mansion in Austria, that of course was discovered to be false. Australian Steve Davis accused General Ihejirika falsely of funding book haram. These are cases of attack on a public official and not against the govt. Al-jazeera once accused the Nigerian government of committing genocide in the North East, that's an attack on the govt which undermines her national interest. Leaking information to an enemy country is also an attack on national interest. A public official is quite different from the govt he serves. |

APContherun:What turns out to be false? Did allison deny the Property? Did another owner claimed the Austrian property? That our corrupt government refused to probe it doesn't makes it false. For Ihejirika, he was accused when he left office, why didn't he take up the challenge to tell the FG to probe the allegation? Why did the DSS exonerated him even without probe? Why didn't the government invite Davies to come shed more light? Dude don't even go there. A government cover-up isn't equivalent to innocence. |

barcanista:Ihejirika is already in court that I'm sure you are aware. Anyway let's not get into the specifics of the cases, I just used them as example to explain to you how different an official is from the government he serves. |

In defense of Buhari, the crack down on the press happened during the military era. so all what he said was in defense of his past action. But I will love to know his presence policy, thought or action towards press freedom. I also want to know how he's going to adapt his thinking towards the democratic process . |

luvmijeje:If that was what he meant, would he not have said," it was the miitary era, I would not do the same today?" He simply justified it and did not distance himslf from it today, and this was the prime opportunity to do so. This man's ego and arrogance is a MAJOR worry. He stops a train contract for Lagos , in the past.....he can not admit that in hindsight it may have been the wrong decision. He is caught in a small issue over his certificates, he replies that he does not need to provide it to anyone. He justifies his killing of young men in the past, without trial and one for a crime that did not carry a death sentence at the time......again his reply is an arrogant justification. This man is a dictator and a tyrant......... |

CFCfan:Good. You say the US govt can prosecute, as in try in a court of law, not ban. This only relates to classified material not views that the govt or govt officials consider embarrassing to themselves. That's a huge difference. |
| Re: You Can Ban The Press If They Will Embarrass A Public Officer - Buhari by londoner: 2:36pm On Feb 01, 2015 |
Bawss1:Exactly....in fact the whole world is protesting against the suppression of freedom of speech and the gagging and hounding of the press by governments. We can't expect Buhari to understand that......he clearly does not respect democracy. These people should get the last of their insults on the president out on GEJ, because if Buhari wins, it will be costly to them. They should wave bye-bye to freedom of speech and criticism of their leaders and their president. What do they suppose Buhari's reaction will be to them, if they decide to call him clueless, or insult his wife openly? |

londoner:I will agree to a smaller extent that he's arrogant but I totally disagree that he's a dictator and a tyrant. This is a man no one has accused of being corrupt..... I won't call that dictatorial, I will called it discipline. This is a man that's loved by millions of his people.... I won't call that tyranny, I will call him a self assured man . This is a man that has been in a position to enriched himself but he never did....... I won't call that arrogant, I will say he's a man of conviction. |

luvmijeje:For me, tyrant and dictator aptly descirbes Buhari to an extent.....whether he is loved or not. Hitler was also loved by many, FW Declerk was loved by many. Definitions of tyrant and dictator describe Buhari to me, even if he may have had a few positives in the eyes of some. ty·rant (tī′rənt) n. 1. An extremely oppressive, unjust, or cruel ruler. 2. An absolute ruler who governs without restrictions, especially one who seized power illegally. 3. An oppressive, harsh, arbitrary person: My boss is a tyrant. tyrant (ˈtaɪrənt) n 1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a person who governs oppressively, unjustly, and arbitrarily; despot 2. any person who exercises authority in a tyrannical manner 3. anything that exercises tyrannical influence 4. (Historical Terms) (esp in ancient Greece) a ruler whose authority lacked the sanction of law or custom; usurper dictator (dɪkˈteɪtə) n 1. (Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a. a ruler who is not effectively restricted by a constitution, laws, recognized opposition, etc b. an absolute, esp tyrannical, ruler 2.
