If we set up a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 playing a little bit on the counter, we will do very well. Play many men behind the ball and then run rapidly at opposition. Di Maria, Young, Rooney and Wilson will do very well from such a style. Also Valencia. We will also be less vulnerable in midfield and defence.

Playing two strikers far in opposition half is a calamity. Then lazy Fellaini is never gets to drop deep or act swiftly.

I think Gaal should stick with Jones since he had chosen him. Few errors here and there are normal for someone who is coming up the ladder as a centre back, particularly as he has been played out of position over the years. Even this season, he was the one sacrificed to cover right back while Rafael went on injury/fell out of favour. We will get that consistency and organisation from him with plenty games in that position just as we did with DDG.

Jones is another jack of all trade master of none. He lacks discipline to man his positon and easily gets attracted to the ball.

DDG had 1 1/2 (one and a half) poor seasons.

Jones was very good for us in the defence and midfield under SAF.

Smalling was the one who played centre back under Moyes. He was always taken to the gutters by average strikers. Jones played midfield last season and he did very well.

Jones played 3/4 of his games in midfield last season.

Jones and Smalling were both okay under SAF but Jones was the preferred (Centre back, midfield and right back).

I would suggest Rooney drops into the number 10 behind RVP....Falcao/Fellaini. Rooney should be given the instruction to drop deep. The three creative players in the central midfield (Blind, Herrera and Di Maria) will need someone with physicality and mobility to help them battle in the middle of the park. That was how we played earlier in the season when we played our best football.

Next season, we will need one strong midfielder to join us. Blind goes to his defensive duty or used as a squad player.
