Well, it doesn't surprise me anymore. Apparently, it's quite acceptable in a certain 9ja culture, at least in some areas of that broad cultural group.

A colleague's brother who had been abroad for about 3 years once called us to celebrate the birth of his child in 9ja. Most of us knew he was NOT settled enough yet to be able to travel back home. In fact nobody remembers him been a way from that city for straight 3 days let alone out of the country. He was still processing documents.

One indiscreet bubbly guy asked why he didn't tell us he was travelling home 9 months ago.

We had to quickly nudge him to seal his loud mouth! grin

We were later informed that as long as he paid the dowry/bride price and did traditional rights, all kids from the woman are his irrespective of biological dad.
