Your comment I quoted.... You can be in Canada legitimately without a valid Visa... Visa is only needed to enter Canada

Really? So the moment you entered Canada you don't need to worry about visa extension when it expires?

That is called living illegally.

Haha a visa gives you no status whatsoever in Canada it only allows you to enter Canada... When your study permit or work permit expires then you are illegal.. It is stated on the permit that you must leave Canada at the expiration of the study permit, when you do not leave then you are illegal... It has nothing to do with visa..

Yes they are, a study permit is issued at the point of entry in Canada, one can't study with just a student visa, if a study permit is not issued the student visa is useless.

grin grin...please read up...check what comes under the term 'visa' here http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/nigeria/visa.aspx?menu_id=2&lang=eng

Study permit is a form of visa, work permit is another form of visa....there is no difference, they are classes of visas.

Well I didn't quite see your point there... However when someone is applying to study in Canada, we indirectly apply for a visa and a study permit but only the visa is issued in Nigeria while the study permit is issued in Canada .... So if u say it's the same thing it's fine by me... My point is that you are very legal in Canada with an expired visa and a valid study permit....

Study permit is issued at the Point of Entry in Canada. When you get to Canada, you spend about 3hr to obtain a study permit. The TRV is only valid to enter Canada. I read about a guy who wasnt issued a study permit at the embassy due to oversight and ignorance, he couldnt proceed with school reg despite the fact that he had a valid Visa. He had to go back to the nearest Airport to meet with the Canada Border Immigration service to be issued a Study permit.

So for the person with an expired TRV, as far as ur Study permit is valid and u ve no plans of leaving Canada to return, u are a legal immigrant. You must apply for an extension of ur study permit if you intend to stay longer than the approved date. No story for dat one o.

when you are using individual sponsor, the sponsor should show how he/she is getting his/her money. that is source of income with a valid documents. if the sponsor is working anywhere, he/she should be ready to give you his/her payslips, statement of account, work ID card, evidence of paying tax, sponsor letter, affidavit of support from notary public. that is all. simple. but if the sponsor own a business or company, it is wise to use his/her personal statement of account and not company statement of account. he/she just need to give you CAC certificate of the business or company, Tax clearance of the company, sponsor letter from the owner of the business, affidavit of support from the business owner by notary public. that is all. simple right. I hope this information will help somebody. God bless you all.
Please is there a difference between the affidavit from a high court and the "notary" one?

You lot are missing the point, visa is an umbrella name for different types of permits.....work, study, visiting etc whatever is stamped on your passport at the POE is the visa aka work permit or study permit.

Lol. Bro, it's not the same thing. Your visa can expire while in Canada. you just have to renew it before you leave canada if you plan to come back in. You said something earlier which I will refer to, renewing is different from extending. You extend a study permit before it expires and renew an expired visa. It's simple English. You renew something that's expired and extend something that's about to expire so it won't expire. I studied for my undergraduates outside nigeria and I was given a TRV from nigeria. Applied for a study permit which serves as my residence permit immediately I got there. Kept on extending my study permit till I completed my studies. I was given a 3 months TRV from nigeria and it expired the month I got there. I didn't renew my visa till i completed my studies And leave. You should try and learn from us too bro. Peace. Now back to the reason for this argument. Y'all should calm down as am sure you are off topic here. The person that asked this question is talking about a visit visa I think which he or she needs to renew. It's going too far. Like I said earlier, let everyone do more research on whatever Question asked here.

Yes there is absolutely no difference between renewing a visa and extending it, when you send in your visa/permit to be renewed you are basically extending the duration of that permit. If you insist then tell me when you renew a visa/permit and when you extend it.

You are just a master of confusion and i hope only you believe what you just written.

Whatever you are holding TRV/study visa/work visa...etc ..you are advised to apply for an extension/renew 30days before it expires.

Apparently, in Canada, you can have a valid study permit/work permit even when the original visa issued from naija(trv) is expired. and you can also renew the study permit even when you don't have a valid trv. But if you plan to leave canada and re-enter even with your valid study permit, you still need to get a trv.

TRV is not visa, study permit given to you at the POE is and that is what you need to extend/renew before it expires

TRV is not visa? why then do you need it to re-enter even with a valid work/study permit.
For the record; TRV - Temporary Resident Visa

And i think TRV is the same class of visa issued to visitors..

Exactly the point the other brother is trying to make. As far as being legal in canada is concerned what matters is the study/work permit and not the TRV.
It's funny how y'all have been saying the same thing all this time, but in different ways
