I had a very unfortunate thing happen to one of people I am currently hosting and I feel its important to share it with everyone and to provide a good way to mitigate the risk of such things happening to other people.

My client had her baby like 3 weeks ago at Oak bend medical center in Richmond and just one week to departure. She checked her account and within a single day, close to $1000 had been used in purchases which she did not order. Its been a sad moment for everyone including myself. We called her bank in Nigeria (Diamond Bank) and we were told that she has to bear the responsibility and that the bank has no business with her getting her money back. They were only able to give her the store location where the card was used. Guess what The card was physically swiped at the two store that the card was used and it was used to purchase gift cards. Funny enough, she never lost her card. She always had it with her all the time. This suggested that the card was cloned. I have always personally envisaged such thing happening understanding that you have to use your card to perform a whole lot of transactions and sometimes you have to call your card information to pay some bill over the phone.

1. Understand that there is no proper system in place for most banks in Nigeria to protect their customers from such, I do recommend to everyone to get a USA bank account and put all the money you think you will need to use in there. That way if this USA card get compromised, all you need to do is file a dispute and the bank will provide credit for the amount that was stolen and go after the perpetrator. You have nothing to loose even if the bank can't resolved the issue. You have your money and that's what is important.

2. If you think you don't want to have to withdraw a huge sum of money at once to put in the USA bank, you can practice what I call Basket and Store principle. That two different independent Nigeria account. One will be the basket and one will be the store. The basket being your daily use will not store that much money but the amount that you might need at the particular period of time. The store will be the power house with all the money. You ensure you can easily, if possible do an immediate transfer from Store to Basket. The lady was doing this but her phone became faulty and she had to move all her money to the daily use account.

See how you might be stranded, if the bank can't protect you, all you will be able to do is get the store to validate the usage and file a police report. The police will conduct investigation(which can go from 2 weeks to "till they find perpetrator".) and get the perpetrator arrested. After then, a court case which has to involve complainant (which means you have to be on ground.). Even though the investigation team will communicate with you via the preferred means you advice, if there is no response to their correspondence within a period of time, case will be closed. If case gets to court and there is no complainant, case closed.

To save you self the stress, all you might just need to do is either of the two things above. I am sure you don't want to carry cash around which might be another but unsafe option.

I am sorry for a lot of grammatical blunders that might be in this right up. Just rushing through the story ni jare.

Same happened to my host's friends that were here before me. The husband happened to have spent thanksgiving in Texas too! In his case over $5000 was spent before he found out, and till today, 5mths later, the Nigerian bank has not been able to resolve it. Same scenario! The card was cloned and physically swiped with Pin in Houston stores! This is serious o! There must be a syndicate involved in this matter, it's the same modus operandi.

She might have used her card to withdraw money from cash a machine fitted with skimming device, it captures your card details and your pin number, fraudsters then transfer those details to any credit card -sized plastic and use it to withdraw money just like normal card.

Doing simple thing like covering the keypad with your hand when putting your pin number will solve such problem.

Most of the major dept stores have plus size sections - Macy's, Dillard's, JC Penney, Kohls. Just google them and their websites should come up.

Just to also mention that your card can be skimmed anywhere in the world. In fact, we have instances where cards are skimmed in Nigeria and used for transactions in China. Covering the PIN will not be sufficient in most cases. My recommendation is therefore that we should endeavor to use ATMs in bank premises. It is usually unlikely that these machines are compromised. Also, try to inspect ATMs before slotting your card in. Be careful when making online purchases, make sure the website is secured. Pay attention to your card when swiping it at check out points, even some cashiers collude with fraudsters. Finally, keep your cards safe and secure, don't assume your friends aren't watching when you are transacting. When you use your card in locations you don't trust, change your PIN asap.

Well, I think it would be nice if you could get a correspondence with your doctor. My wife didn't have any figure in writing, just her emails with the doctor. Get the doctor to send you a letter that you will be receiving care from her before and after delivery in her hospital's letter headed paper. A scan copy will do just fine.

Had our son in Missouri and I gave her $10,000 cash for everything from hospital bills to baby shopping and flight. Can you beat that?

Thank you very much all.. God bless you I will contact hospitals and try to get an estimate

Thanks again
Will update you grin

Congrats to Kate Middleton! Oh boy, how I wish I were in her shoes. I won't have to bother with all the things we're discussing here and no headaches from calculating, browsing, mailing, making calls, promo flights, dollar exchange rate, clothes, accommodation, visa, POE e.t.c.
Well, thank God.

Hi good people,

And so I had my baby at Parker Adventist Hospital in colorado two weeks ago. Baby and mother doing fine. The hospital was okay in terms of service but not very straight forward in terms of bill. Thanks to senior mamas in the house for equipping me with enough info and this forum for teaching one to ask questions until you are sure. I have been on their neck for letter of zero balance since I was discharged but they keep saying they are balancing their books although I have my receipts. It takes time to get your bills here. I have been on the neck of all of those people for bills stating categorically that am returning to my country to no avail. Anyway, am still here hoping to get all resolved. My doctor is very nice (God bless his soul for me). He is the only one with straight forward bills.

Even processing of baby's paper sef na wa. The expedited be like normal day process. Gosh!!!!! This people just take their time

In all, am happy I have my little boy. All others na secondary. God go help us.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the info shared on this forum...... Phema and boldbabe, thanks for the experience shared. I appreciate everyone.
