I respect your opinion(s).

But what happens to forgiveness ?

What happens to brotherly love ?

How may times are we suppose to offend our brother per day to get forgiveness ?

I understand u sir but forgiveness comes with repentance and genuine regret for ones actions.

How can he get over such very quickly sir? My belief is that he is not sorry for his actions at all. If it was me, I will be so sad for days.

How can he live with himself after such deceit and evil behavior?

Oga we will not allow Buhari chance to reinvent his dictatorial leadership on Nigerians. He can do that as Governor of Katsina State but not as President

So you're comparing GEJs action to Buhari's outright BAN? Okay let's wait till he starts closing media houses for exposing him so you can look for another fault of GEJ to compare it with.
jonathan's action was alot worse as he used state power in a blatantly illegal manner in gagging the press by ordering an illegal seizure, while Buhari merely told AIT to stay clear of him. Granted that both actions may be legally wrong, but if you are an unbiased judge, who will get the stiffer penalty? Jonathan ba? I guess so too. Hence the 'lesser infringement' I talk about

Is this the plan? Are you aware that there can be no democracy without freedom? Whoever can't guarantee that has no business in leadership.

Who defines democracy? The west? Why must democracy have absolute press freedom? Is having press freedom more important than electricity?

You've raised issues that are so vital and are even beyond the scope of this thread! Thank you!

However, freedom of the press is a vital issue we can't allow to slide.

Seriously, I have my own issues with our tailoring our system to suit the West!

All I am saying is focus on serious matters that affect us and not press freedom. It is important but certainly not the cornerstone to development.

TANiods and President Jonathan's supporters are just getting into emotional overdrive over Buhari's victory. The AIT issue is just a storm in a teapot. There is nothing against press freedom in Buhari not allowing AIT or any other person into his house. AIT was not banned, their licence was not withdrawn, their station was not closed down, their reporters were not arrested or harrased, so what is all the noise about Buhari denying press freedom.

Even though Buhari denies knowlegde of the whole thing, he has the right to allow or deny anyone into his private house. If he was already sworn in president and it is an official assignment, then we can start talking about Buhari denying AIT its right of press freedom. But for now Buhari can still enjoy his life as a private citizen.

If it was me, i would not even allow AIT anywhere near me or my family, i would only deal with them on official basis, nothing personal, no favours.

If it was President Jonathan and his family that was insulted by hate campaigns promoted by a media organization, i am sure the media organization have been shut by now.

Press freedom does not mean unlimited access to the homes and private lives of all citizens - both public and private.

The press is not big brother.

Lalasticlala and other mods, kindly ignore anyone who's against moving this article to homepage. Press freedom, freedom of speech and expression can't be tampered with by incoming government. Hence, the extent of heat and pressure from different sources and individuals no matter how many will deter anyone with such heinous ambition of muscling and intimidating the press alongside citizenry. Save our democracy by moving this to homepage... thanks

Senseless threads like this one brings tears to my eyes.

Barcanista, i have a few questions for you

What are the negative effects on the common Nigerian as a result of this supposed ban?

So because in the western world, press freedom is key characteristic of democracy, Nigeria must follow what is defined without any change as regards to our cultural differences?

If buhari bans all forms of press freedom but he gives Nigerians cheap electricity, clean drinking water, better medical facilities, security, jobs, etc, do you think he would be re-elected?

If your answer is no to the last question, please give sensible reasons.

I suggest you watch Mrs. Ezekwesili's interview at Oxford. Don't focus on her defence of obasanjo, but listen to her reasons for why Nigeria is as messed up as it is and also listen to her solutions. If you have time, read Ben Bruce's advice to buhari too.

Although press freedom is a really good thing, we should not make a mountain out of a molehill. Please let's focus on issues and criticise reasonably so we can all have a better Nigeria.

On the 26th of April, AIT Crew went to cover the meeting between the Cuban Ambassador and Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari. On arriving the Defence House (Abuja), the Buhari security team stopped AIT from accessing the premises. According to the security team, there is an order barring AIT from covering Buhari'es Event.

Buhari's Media Aide Confirmed And Reitrates The Ban
When asked, Alhaji Shehu Garba, Buhari's spokesman confirmed the ban on AIT. In his own word

“AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics.

“We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter, but for now the station has been asked to stay aside, because like I said there are some family and security concerns. They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards.”

When asked whether he should be quoted, Shehu said, “yes you can quote me that I said we have asked them to step aside and that we are resolving the issues of ethics and standards with them.
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/hate-campaign-buhari-fights-back-bars-ait-from-covering-activities/

Buhari Denies Knowledge Through The Same Media Aide
Though the ban was later to be reversed by the APC leadership after public condemnation, Buhari rather than apologise for his inglorious attempt to gag AIT crew from carrying out their responsibility, he chose to play and insult the sensibilities of Nigerians by shifting the blame to his "overzealous Aide".

According to the Press release by Shehu Graba, Buhari instructed that only his media should deal with the press and "everyone should stay in their defined area of responsibility". The irony of it is that the Media Aide Alhaji Shehu Garba that sent the denial release is the same Shehu Garba that earlier said "Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics."
To show that Buhari was/is insincere, neither his media aide Shehu Garba nor any of his security team has been punished or reprimanded with respect to the ban. Also Shehu Garba is yet to withdraw his earlier statement where he quoted Buhari giving the ban order on AIT.

Buhari Should Take Responsibility For His Action
General Buhari with due respect should understand that Nigeria citizens are not fools. As a leader, he is responsible for every utterances that comes from his media aide especially when he is quoted to be involved. He should stop the policy of blame game and shifting his responsibilities to others. The President elect should stop taking us for granted and should be ready to accept his gaffe. A true leader is one that apologize and repent after committing blunder and not one that run away from his responsibilities. I hope the Buhari administration will not be a government of blame-game. I hope Buhari will come clean on issues that relates to him and his government when he takeover the reins of power.

God Bless Nigeria

Bro, be sure that those needs you're harping on won't be actualized without the press. Press is the voice of the masses and government... Press is eyes of government... Press is the unofficial police of government and masses...Press is all...Democracy is not alien to our culture as you wrongly assumed in your post...Freedom of press/expression/speech will guarantee those stuff you desire because press will always keep government on their toes & hold them accountable especially opposition media groups...Without press freedom, you won't be on Nairaland...Any government that kills the press, kills wholesome development...Stop sounding "westernphobia"...Democracy isn't alien to Africa...freedom of expression isn't alien to us...let no man tamper with it including buhari....
