Keep deceiving yourself. Literacy rate has increased dramatically since independence. Why do you think the vast majority of our grandparents are illiterates? Use your brain for once!

Big Uncle, I had to jump on this thread, after seeing the picture and your post. And keep your reply not-too-deep/personal cos everything shouldn't be discussed on the internet, if you get the drift. wink

Anyway, I never knew that loquacious man's from the Agbonmade family tree. Ditto an Agbonmagbe bank. I have heard about the Agbonmade house somewhere in Lagos. The links...the links...the links. grin

Agbonmagbe was divided into two - Okupe and a next name, no? And the next name was further divided into two. Can you list all the ruling families in Iperu-Remo?

Well, I don't know much about the divisions. I just know Okupe, while Agbonmagbe is the family name, but some chose to use both names as a compound surname (Okupe-Agbonmagbe). The Agbonmagbe house is located at the Adekunle entry/exit of 3rd Mainland bridge just at the end of Herbert Macaulay Road Yaba. It's a house built by Doyin's father, the industrialist. Same Doyin's father also developed an estate in Maryland Lagos, called Okupe-Estate. All the houses are actually sold out but some are occupied by family.

I believe there are 3 ruling houses, Agbonmagbe(Okupe), Amororo, never knew the 3rd.

If you must know, my surname isn't either of those names, but I can trace my maternal links to Iperu Remo via the Okupe family amongst other popular families. Notable families from Iperu-Remo are Olushola (Late Amb. Segun Olushola), Ogunlesi, Adebutu (Kesington Adebutu of premier lotto - Baba Ijebu).

It's been a while I've been to Iperu Remo. At least not in a decade.

I'm no big uncle ooo, just a dude with a flair for world history, and charity has to begin at home.

Naija was more organized under the whites. Beautiful pix
No it wasn't. Nigeria was an underdeveloped, deprived hellhole under the whites. A footpath led to your village under the whites. Today under the blacks a tarred road leads to it, filled with cars.

Of course I know that. I'm surprised you know.

Good, my earlier comment was centred or limited to Nigerians way back then. That is why I said corruption, stealing and the likes were almost zero.

I am not giving you my "opinion". I am giving you the facts. In the 1960s literacy rate was between 10 and 25%. Compared to 74% today.

That is your inferiority complex talking. A failure to appreciate the massive progress we have made. If I post modern pictures of Nigeria they would look a million times better than these pictures.

What is so special about these pics? Nigeria was very underdeveloped when all those pics were taken. Most people were malnourished, lived in neglected villages with no electricity or running water. Cars were only for the super rich. Roads were virtually non existent. Illiteracy was the order of the day. Op please stop romanticising misery and deprivation. LIFE IS MUCH BETTER TODAY FOR NIGERIANS.
What's this one saying ?
Plz ask your parents which era they preferred.
Free scholarship
No armed robbery
No kidnappings
Power supply was better
Equal power between dollar, pounds, Naira
Several Europeans were living in Naija then........unlike now..........because it was more comfortable

Way back then corruption, greed, stealing was almost zero. every man and woman was his or her neighbour's keeper but not anymore. I weep for this country. Just in the early nineties here, N20 was enough for me to go to school from Monday to Friday while in secondary school.
was that 20 naira as common as it is now.

More self delusion. The colonialists siphoned over 90% of annual export earnings which was why Nigeria was underdeveloped with not a single university or expressway after 63 years of uninterrupted colonial rule. So corruption actually reduced following independence.

There are people who actually think that Britain put Nigeria on a path for success.

They don't understand that Nigeria was run as a business for the benefit of stake holders as opposed to the inhabitants.

Free scholarship for how many people? 1 in 100? Today we don't need scholarships because post independence govts have built thousands of schools and 200 universities. What "better" power supply are you talking about? There were no power plants worthy of the name until after independence. The colonialists didn't even build a grid! The "several Europeans'' who lived in Nigeria then were holed up in pampered cocoons of comfort like Ikoyi from which blacks like you were barred, unless you were a servant.
