I was about to say too. $1000 is waaay too high for a pediatrician. Pls try and source one outside the hospital abeg. They're usually cheaper. If u start paying 1k dollars for a newborn now, how much them go charge when the pikin comes for follow up checkup at 1 week??

Hello Peeps,

This platform as really been of help to me so I think I should share my experience briefly;
I applied for visa alongside my husband on our virgin passport and reason being that I was going for delivery and we were granted visa. My poe was DFW and it was very easy ( I requested for wheel chair).
My Dr is Glenn Morgan and hospital was Houston Northwest Medical Centre. I got bills for Doctor, Hospital, Pediatrician and Pathologist; I spent approximately 6500 USD for normal delivery including epidural.
I lodged at Intown Suites but discovered I would have stayed at Studio 6 at Bammel Westfield Road. Studio 6 is closer and walking distance to the hospital and Dr's (depending on your energy level). Kroger, Babies "R" Us, DD's Discount, Fallas and other stores are very close to Studio 6. It is possible to get all documents within a week post delivery. I went to Downtown Houston and got the BC within 30 minutes, I booked appointment and got Passport same day and with the help of Tanko, Visa can be gotten within 48 hours.
God is indeed faithful.
Thanks to you all and I wish us all the best.
Cheers!

interesting. thanks for this.

if you do not mind me asking, at what week of your pregnancy did you leave for Houston?

I am based in Europe and i am currently thinking about birthing in the US.

Yes oo That's exactly what I will do. I can't start paying $1k just for pediatrician.i learnt there's options of picking external pediatrician.

bachangel:
Hello everyone! Congrats to all the Mums to be.. Been following this blog for a while now. I have been married for about a year now and we are expecting our 1st child.

My question comes from a very different direction. wonder if anyone has questioned or attempted to justify how worth it having a baby in the US is? When I worked out the costs, with the current exchange rate it works out to be N4m. (This is about a quarter of our savings).

N4m includes flights, hospital bills, shopping and accomodation. Although I will be staying with family before the baby is born and will move to an apartment when my hubby joins me just before baby and afterwards. I do like my space, especially at such a sensitive time. It also seems to me that several people are fine with having a baby in the US while their husbands stay back at home maybe to save cost or whatever but that is out of the question for me and his presence is the most important thing but that raises cost a bit.

So my husband and I are really unsure for the following reasons.

1. Giving birth in Nig will cost me N0.00k because my office will pay for it all. In the US we have to spend a reasonable chunk of our savings.

2. There is no risk of my hubby missing the birth cuz in the US he can only be away from work for 3 weeks max and babies smtimes decide to come out 2 weeks ealier or later, making it hard for him to be there in time and also leave the US together.

3. In Nigeria, I can work up until the week I'm due, leaving me plenty of time to spend with my baby afterwards.

4. I can have a proper naming ceremony 8 days afterwards with my whole family, also sentimentally, the same Doctor that brought me into this world 30 years ago, will also be my OBGYN and help deliver my own child.

5. I would be in my own comfortable space at home, and its just less stressful than the logistics of travelling.

Ofcourse the advantages of the US, ...the passport and....not sure what else...better healthcare I guess.

So my question to other Mums to be, Did you struggle with these kind of thoughts or other sentimental reasons? It wld be nice to hear your feedback. Between I already have a US visa.

Thanks!

P.S: Because Ive seen how abusive it can get here, I hope people can genuinely see I am only sharing my concerns and trying to see if others had similar concerns. If these things never crossed your mind, lucky u.

I wonder what bachangel finally decided on....
I'm just wondering cos I also have the same reservations/dificulties making up my mind on the whole US birth thingy

CBP- Who told you about this hospital or did u go there on your last visit?
Me- I searched them out, read reviews and called the hospital and doctor. But i intend to do a tour of the 2 hospitals i have in minf this week so as to decide on which i want.
CBP-How much do you have you have with you.
Me- $9765
CBP-(Asking mum) Is this ur first time here?

This is not a form but a letter both parents have to write and send to the Nigerian embassy in addition to other documents to secure a visa for their child. Even if you are using an agent to get the visa you still have to write the letter, both parents. And no, it is not going to be notorised

@ Woaini, can both parents sign the same letter and do you have a format of the letter used to apply for Nigerian Visa.

Secondary inspection

I was asked to wait in a room. Met 3 white people there. Mum also already panicking. Tolf her to calm down and just pray. My name was called after 20mins. I went to face another CBP.

CBP- How are you today
Me- am fyne.
CBP- okay, you intend to have your baby here right, can i see the money you have on you.
Me-Yes, gave him the money and he counted it. The money was short of 1k when he was done but i insisted he count it again as i was sure its wad $9500 i gave him. He did and confirmed it okay.He looked thru my papers again and then stamped my passport put the documents together and gave me my money.
CBP- Enjoy your stay and have a safe delivery.
Me- thank u. I stood there opened my passport and saw stamped in till Dec 06.

Went to get our bags, no further checks so all i took with me scaled thru.

Thank God and thank you to all those have have shared experiences.

am just resting for now. Hospital tour starts tomorrow.

Yes o! Quite high but that is the coy they use - Pediatrix; I am not sure you have a choice at least for those 2 days that will be spent in the hospital. After discharge you then choose a doctor for the baby. But overall, it is still a fair deal...

Check @ shelly23 post on page 138 she already gave some kind of format which I intend to follow. I am yet to apply for the visa but I took out time to check out the process on their website. I believe you write the letters individually as opposed to signing one letter. I stand to be corrected though by those that already got their baby's visa

If it's going to be one letter signed by both parents how would the format be? And some of us are not here with our spouse so what do we do? For me I already have pre signed papers by my husband all I have to do is write the letter and that would be easier for me if it's written individually
