I was also a Union bank staff until yesterday and as the writer rightly said, no prior issue, last performance report sent to marketers June 17- I was doing 95.4%. No threat, nothing! I also got my confirmation in April and the 2 years bond we signed was meant to lapse in December.

Dear house, this is injustice, the letter read 'Termination of appointment' - then I asked, on what ground?

Please we need help and advice from fellow bankers and legal practitioners. How do i get them to change the caption of the letter

I would love to see your contract of employment and termination letter. After which I would offer advice on the way forward. I'm a legal practitioner and I work with a firm of practitioners one of whose speciality is employment and labour laws

Humnnn! Don't be carried away with employments in private establishments as they have every right to sack any staff at will if it is not convenient for them. Secondly there are other under current relationships going on between some female staffers and the top male echelon of some private organisations who may be your colleagues and in the course of your assignment you get close without any string attached and those senior interests may pick quarrel with you silently without you knowing and if they are that influential you can be persecuted wrongly. But above all there are a lot of undisclosed reason why one can lose job in any private establishment and the only legal battle you can have with them is payment of your salary arrears. Anything outside that will amount to effort in futility. Look elsewhere for a better job please.

Seen lots of comments on the employer having right to do whatever at any time.

That is absolutely incorrect.

Whether it is Union Bank or Igboeze Microfin, the signe employer employee contract and T and C have it that either party can only terminate d contract with at least 2 weeks notice or payment in lieu of that.

So long as no one have d time and resources to seek legal redress and make d banks pay heavily for this nonsense, it will just continue nonstop.
I have worked in global cooperation both inside and outside Nigeria (Banks included) and all the contract of employment signed listed that business or employment with the company can be terminated at any time without prior notice.

I bet Harvey Specter(Suits) would find a loophole in such contract just good enough to drag d bank to court.
For real a good lawyser can always find a syntax to hold on dearly to.
But I like to move on especially if I know no harm will be done to any party if I do so.

I don't see any thing suicidal about your case.I assume u expect that a banker in Nigeria can be disposed by his employer at anytime. So if u think its the end of your life then you are a Learner. Am also a banker but I don't think the romance will last forever. So I think wat you will be after is ur EOS package. Abeg no kill itself. grin

I think the OP is just among the group of sacked workers from Union bank.

95% performance approval is nothing. If 99% of the employees in the bank score above 95%, then the bank will sack people above the 95% in appraisal if they wish to cut costs.

Funny thing, bank employees that are tied to many staff/consumer loans hardly get sacked. How will the HR recover their money? .... lol!

OP, times are hard my best advice is to chase other ideas. It is not easy to recover from shocks such as these. But you have to, else you will be stock in doldrums.

Well, we the lawyers are only needed when there's trouble. I can almost bet that the Bank has breached terms in their contract judging from the way their appointment was terminated... the hustle is real, I'll offer them free advice if contacted and leave them to make up their mind. Lol

Dear Nairalanders,

It is with a heavy heart full of worries and grief I write this. Posting this wasn’t my idea till an active nairalander who happened to be my friend suggested I explain my plight to well meaning Nigerians on how to go about seeking redress or what next to do with my shattered life because right now, I am so sad, bewildered, conked out and sorrowful. Today, I have contemplated suicide but I am not the kinda person that gives up so easily so I am willing to fight this through even with the last drop of my blood.

Till Friday 26th of June, 2015, I work for the above named bank in Nigeria. I joined them last year, went to training school and consequently became a full staff. I was confirmed specifically in the first quarter of this year as a full staff. Prior to confirmation, I have never fallen below 95percent. As a matter of fact because of my experience and wits, I was made the branch manager of the branch where I was posted immediately after training school. Since then, I have been undertaking series of professional examination related to my job ranging from ICAN to CIBN and I have always been scoring above 95percent as regards HR appraisal since I joined the bank.

However, I got to work today, logged into the system like I do every other day only to see the greatest shocker of my life. I was surprisingly denied access and consequently instructed to call the IT control department. My initial guess was that I have possibly been transferred to another branch. The IT department said I should contact the HR that I have been suspended.

I started sweating profusely inspite of the cabinet AC directly opposite my desk but I never had a clue till I got an email from HR almost immediately saying my appointment has been terminated. For crying out loud I had 95percent in HR appraisal just last month, I have just been confirmed in May, what have I done wrong? Where do I start from here? What do I do? Series of thoughts started flowing into my mind in thousands I started feeling feverish immediately. I am so blank right now. I need advice, I feel demoralized, dejected, rejected, and I feel so cheated.

I have very cool relationship with my bosses and i cant think of stepping on anyone's toe at the moment. This sudden occurence has defied all reasonable logic and i dont know what else to thing about......I will hang on as i await your replies. Thank you alot.

From Suspension to termination?
In such an organization?
I expect you to do an internal private investigation first since you claimed you were a bank manager before
Use that influence to garner information on what may have led to your suspension and termination WITHOUT DUE NOTICE!!!
This sounds too fishy and cannot be ignored. You must find out the reason for this. Garner that info from your colleagues unless nobody liked you when you were in charge.
Find out from your bank manager friends what happened.
Are you really sure you were a bank manager? You typed in a naive manner
A bank manager is more shrewd and tactical than what you typed.
You should have a friend at HR ,even one of the HR female you are phuccking steadily. Garner information from her!!!

Come back when you have sought out the information!!

grin grin grin grin

Op is simply not prepare, there are some basic rules you should have follow as soon as you get in the Industry.

1. Prepare for your exit as soon as you are employed.
2. Treat your monthly salary as if you are not going to get the next salary.
3. Find an alternative part time business you can engage to generate at least 40% of your current salary.
4. Save 50% of your salary.
5. Take advantage of all in-house facilities that are available.
Banks employment offer letter are simple and straightforward, they have the right to advise that they no longer require your services irrespective of your performance.

@OP and any other person involved, read and read well,
1.I have been in your shoe b4 and trust me, going to court is d last thing you need as you still have a long career ahead of you.
2.Take some time off to reflect and decide on exactly what you want to do,did you really enjoy ur stay in d bank and wld like to continue a banking career or do you have your eye on something else as this might be d only opportunity you will have to decide.
3.Wen I was laid off a few years back with exactly same words, termination,I felt bad cos I didnt knw any better.Termination of employment is accepted worldwide as a legitimate reason for leaving a job,so dont worry only summary dismissal is bad for your CV.
4.If you decide to as a banker like I did in my own case ,update your CV and start contacting whoever youknw in d industry for information and possible assistance.
5.This is d time to use ur data constructively, hunt tirelessly for info online and be d first to knw.
6.Finally dont knw if ure religious but u need some form of inner strength and grace at this period.Be close to ur God.
I have since worked in several banks and always present my termination letter as part of my documentation with no problem.
Wishing all d best!

@Op please tell us what really happened. U can never be a branch manager after training school.
There is more to life. Dust your CV and move on again. Once there is life then there is hope. Start with your contacts and never rush into any business now. Believe me in 4 months time you will be better off.

If you are sure you have not done anything wrong, please go to court. Termination of Employment is used when someone has a DC issue and found culpable because it wont allow you to get another Banking job. Service No Longer Required is a better way of disengaging staff during rationalisation or right sizing exercise in Banks. This implies that you could approach another Bank for employment without any cause for alarm. Uou could get some damages compensation from court if your story is true.

I disagree with you here. Termination of Appointment is an employee departure from the job. It may be voluntary on employees part or at the instance of the employer. Ops will still be paid his terminal benefit if one actually exist.
Dismissal is when you have a DC issue or found culpable on one issue.
