it portrays Africans as primitive and backward and African Americans as thugs and criminals

Truth hurts definitely.

Is lawless not quite same as primitive?

What do African American successful artists and athletes do to promote the education and subsequent empowerment of their own race in the country? You can go through the following thread on NVS for a sample of what I am talking about:

He is right about racism. Very right sef
You have a far greater chance to be discrimated against based on your origin in Nigeria than in America

You are totally clueless - tribalism and racism are not the same thing.

I've never heard of anyone in Nigeria being denied access to education, housing and jobs simply because they are from a different ethnic group from the ethnic group that is in power.

In the US blacks are systematically excluded and marginalised by the system of white supremacy and this has been proven with facts and figures.

Also the US imprisons more black men than any country in the world including South Africa when it was under apartheid rule.

Day Lam Adesina clashed with Buhari, Marwa, others
November 18, 2012

.
.
.
.
It was on 13 October 2000, when words went round that General Muhammadu Buhari was leading the Arewa team to the governor’s office to confront the state over alleged killings of Fulani cattle rearers in Saki, Oke Ogun Area of the state. Buhari did actually telephone the governor that he was leading a team to his office.

In less than 30 minutes after the general informed the governor of his visit, we noticed that the entire secretariat was already filled with lorry loads of our brothers from the North. This created some tension but we kept our calm. At about 2 p.m., Buhari arrived in a long convoy at the governor’s office in company of the former governor of Lagos State, General Buba Marwa, Alhaji Aliko Muhammed, Alhaji Abdulrazak and Alhaji Hassan. They all wore long faces. In fact, the anger in them was palpable as all pleasantries extended to them were ignored. “This is trouble” was the expression on the faces of all of us in the governor’s office.

Shortly afterwards, the state Director of State Security Service (SSS) and Commissioner of Police arrived. But their presence did not change anything particular on the fears that had already gripped majority of us. The two security chiefs did not come with any operatives, they came almost alone.

The meeting was called to order after Lam walked into the Executive Chambers. Introductions over, Buhari spoke on their mission to the governor’s office. Emitting fire, the general accused Lam and the government of Oyo State of complicity in the killing of over 68 Fulani people in Oke Ogun area and perversion of justice.

His words: “Your Excellency, our visit here is to discuss with you and your government our displeasure about the incident of clashes between two peoples… the Fulani cattle rearers and merchants are today being harassed , attacked and killed like in Saki. In the month of May, 2000, 68 bodies of Fulani cattle rearers were recovered and buried under the supervision and protection from a team of Mobile Police from Oyo State Command.

“ That some arrests were made by Oyo State Police Command in the massacre with their immediate release without court trial. This was said to have been ordered by Oyo State authorities and they were so released to their amazement. The release of the arrested suspects gave the clear impression that the authorities are backing and protecting them to continue the unjust and illegal killings of Fulani cattle rearers…”
According to the general, they therefore wanted immediate stoppage of the killings, justice and compensation to the Fulanis.

As weighty and indicting as Buhari’s allegations were, Lam remained unperturbed. He fired back with his own well coordinated arsenals.
Lam identified all the points raised by Buhari and simply asked the heads of the organizations directly involved to respond to the allegations.
First to speak was the Commissioner of Police who debunked all the claims. Instead of the allegation that the natives were killing Fulanis, the commissioner said pointedly that the opposite was the case.

“ The killing of the natives by the Fulanis was duly reported to the police and, of course, we can’t make arrest because, as soon as they kill, they migrate to other areas. Who are you going to arrest? That is the problem”. On the killing of Fulanis, which he said was as result of “piled up anger”, the commissioner disclosed that arrests had been made and the suspects were in police custody.

Next was the Director of SSS, who equally debuked the allegations by Buhari. “The natives don’t have problem with the Fulanis who are resident but those who are coming in, they don’t care about anybody. They just go ahead and when they graze the natives farms, whoever cares to challenge them runs into trouble. You said 68 people were killed , and people driven away. I am not saying there were no killings but they cannot be more than five. The petition is on the harsh side, there is nothing like that.”

Not done yet, Lam called in his Deputy, Barrister Iyiola Oladokun; his SSG, Chief Michael Koleoso, both from Oke Ogun, and the chairman of one of the affected local government areas, Mr Ademola Alalade. They stated the true position of things, corroborating the submissions of the security chiefs. At this point, all the tensions and apprehensions evaporated.

Trust Lam any day, he must rub it in. He spoke for about 20 minutes and the generals were at the edge of their seats for the entire period. They were like chicken that had just been thoroughly beaten by the rain.

Lam said: “ Before I thank you for this visit, you have come to tell me something. I also want to tell you something and that something is to make an appeal. General Buhari has been a former Head of State, Brigadier Marwa has governed Lagos for some time and with credibility… so you are national leaders of this country. Even though, by accident of birth, you are from the North, you can be born anywhere; may be next time when I am coming to the world, I will be born in the North or the South-South.

“My appeal will be that effort must be made to unite this country and that will be ïn the best interest of all Nigerians. I am appealing to the Arewa Consultative Forum, under which auspices our distinguished Nigerians are here; in recent times, they have been sending wrong signals to a number of us who believe in the unity and peace of Nigeria; you have been too critical of the efforts of the Federal Government. I am saying this because Nigeria, at this point, cannot afford to break and the words you northern leaders utter are very weighty, at the South here, we normally analyze them critically”.

On all the allegations, he said: “From what they have written in the petition, this government is completely blameless because we don’t interfere either with the judiciary or with the police functions. I always preach peaceful co-existence in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole. We are all Nigerians and that is what we have been preaching all along and we shall continue to be Nigerians , no matter the present or immediate problems which will be solved by the grace of Allah.

“I want to say also that we really have to appeal to our people, the itinerant Bororo people, that they should observe less aggression. It is not good , it is not right just coming from somewhere then you just pass through farm lands cultivated may be with the person’s life savings and then over night everything is gone. That is not right, even Allah does not approve of that.
We even wonder when they talk about this people carrying dangerous weapons, I say do they really believe in Allah? When you just take life like that and go away! Are we not forbidden not to take human life? So I think General Buhari, General Marwa, you have to be educating them… It is my pleasure to inform you that at the Presidential Lodge, we have made some arrangements for refreshments so that before you go we can refresh together”.

Buhari and his team did not wait for any refreshments. They came in angry and left bewildered.

Thanks. They keep making it sounds like everyone is being shot on on street of America. Given the size of the country the shootings are far lower than Nigeria where they don't even make the news anymore.

bushdoc9919:

Not necessarily (I have relations who have lived or live stateside). They have gun rights.....but even then, you still have to jump through several hurdles before you buy a gun (Yes....Dylan Roof had a gun...that was bought by his dad. Adam lanza used his mum's guns.Roof and Lanza won't have been allowed to buy guns if they tried.).

A big problem with gun control is formulating a law that covers both rural and urban areas sufficiently (Rural gun owners need their guns...because as OP said some parts of the US are still desolate.....and the cops in rural areas sometimes are responsible for a region as wide as half a Nigerian state.)

Also shootings happen everywhere.....especially in Nigeria. Just the other day, a young newlywed man was shot dead by a policeman. And a young man my mum helped mentor was shot by a soldier(He survived). And in Germany and the UK this past week.....4 people died in drive by shootings.

For how long shall we be our own worst enemies? Perhaps you should reflect on these issues.

Can you answer this simple question? Was the US founded with or without violence ?

Were WEB du bois and Booker T Washington athletes or educationists?

Have you ever heard of Black Wall Street? If yes,who created it and what happened to it?

And finally, why were the descendants of Japanese Americans that were held in internment camps during the second world war paid reparations but the descendants of African slaves who built the US not given a penny in reparations by the US govt.

Not entirely true. There is a larger black population in prison because there is a larger issue of absent fathers and gangs in the black neighbourhoods. Not racism.

Does me making the conscious effort to avoid predominantly black areas because they have higher crime and poor schools make me racist?

Please stop the they treat you bad if you are black talk. If you are well educated, carry yourself well and can deliver they treat you same. Obviously if you wear you jeans low on you bum looking like a gangster, even I a black Nigerian will avoid you and already have negative impression. Same as if I come across white hippies looking high on drugs.

omonnakoda:
Don't know how you can say racism is exaggerated just by travelling.
Is it exaggerated that blacks are overrepresented in prison and get up to 3 or 4 times the sentence for the same offence as a white person
or that police kill blacks like flies
Try getting a job, scholarship or walking in the shoes of black Americans who live there all their lives
The moment a white person in America recognizes you as a black foreigner they tend t treat you differently besides you are not engaging them on a level where you seek anything from them. Try getting arrested with cannabis and see what gives( many states legalize it now) but previously a black person would end up in court while white folk get warnings
Try explaining why despite trashing Maria Sharapove 18 times Serena still gets fewer endorsements and ads
There are many Americas depending on where you are on the food chain and how much money you have just like Nigeria.
I wonder whether you visited rural Alabama or South Carolina.
America is a dangerous place for black people according to all the statistics

Can you answer this simple question? Was the US founded with or without violence ?

Was the Oyo Empire founded and sustained with or without violence?

Was the Sokoto/Fulani Caliphate founded and sustained with or without violence?

Was the Benin Empire (that included present day Lagos Island) founded and sustained with or without violence?

Between 1914 and 1945 (31 years) Europe had two World Wars with some 100 million people killed including genocide of Jews to REDRAW the borders of their countries among other reasons/consequences.

So violence and nation founding/building are intertwined.

And finally, why were the descendants of Japanese Americans that were held in internment camps during the second world war paid reparations but the descendants of African slaves who built the US not given a penny in reparations by the US govt.

Were the Japanese SOLD as slaves by their own kiths and kins who received what they considered FAIR price for the sale?
Were the descendants of Joseph (Yussuf to Muslims) paid reparations by Egyptians after he was SOLD by his own brothers as a slave instead of being killed as told in the Bible (and the Koran) ?

Have the Arabs paid reparations for black slaves that are STILL held as slaves in their countries

Did our local slave owners pay reparations to the descendants of those they held as slaves some of whom are STILL treated as outcasts in some ethnic groups?

Let us calmly address our shortcomings strategically rather than whining.

Have you heard that a child who does not know how to handle a sword does not YET ask how/who killed his father? The Chinese definitely understand and have practised this simple philosophy over the last 50 years or so.

I like to engage with people who can reason and articulate an argument logically not just throw up a verbigeration as a substitute. So what if a black man becomes president does that mean there is no longer racism ? We are talking about America so there is ethnic bashing in Nigeria what does the one have to do with the other. If you do not know the history of blacks in America go and study before coming here to talk rubbish. No one has said people should not take responsibility for themselves but find out the history before talking "jazz" . Black people went to segregated schools only a generation ago which of course were badly funded. During the slave period black men were not allowed to be fathers to their children who belonged to the owners and were often removed so for several generations black people had no famlly life and no models of that and when slavery ended they had the worst of it. So it is no surprise that black in America tend to marry less often than other folks and having children with often no father figure. Black people die earlier and and have worse health .The system is loaded against them and only a small number break out. If you are a black man in America before the age of 20 more than one person you know will be killed etc . So please before you open your ignorant smug mouth next time try and learn more about the subject
Does religion sell more in Africa than in the US or the Arab world?

This is good for Blacks if they can see it. First, history has wasted too much time trying change the way white people feel about their racism.. which is their culture. I dont believe in integration of all people, but I respect other cultures and wouldn't try to infringe on them.

Black people should know about racism by now simply by looking at their own history and the history of United States, connecting those simple dots, and then conclude that blacks shouldnt be putting too much emotion into changing white people. Dr. King tried, Mandela tried, countless other civil activists have tried, and yet white racism hasnt died off and has only went more global. I gladly support the DNA what makes us different, not how hard we kiss their as.s to be accepted

Nobody (or group) helps another for free. There is always a price to be paid, including simple individual (or group) respect.

If you keep bailing out a relation or friend, how much respect will you really have for such a person?

Ask yourself, reflect on that and extrapolate to the bigger society/world.

I sorry for you really but make I helep you small with pointers from his post before you over-salivate for nothing shocked

cityAdventures:

1. Racism is real, but exaggerated

Yes, it is still there, but now, it is more passive than ‘in your face.’ It is now more about condescension, than open hostility. Strange right? Especially when you turn on the TV to watch a white guy just walk into a South Carolina Church just to gun down black people.

Terrible, yes and this and many more crimes like it are actually hate crimes churned from the depraved mind of a single individual, not the actions of a collective- definitely not rascism.

Gone are the days when Rosa Parks was told to get up from her Montgomery bus seat because she was black, or the days when shingles said ‘Blacks and Dogs not allowed here.’ Now people can only turn down their noses as you walk past, refuse to be friendly with you, not hire you, hiding their racial bias behind technical reasons, refuse to patronize your business or engage in passive forms of snobbery.

But that’s just about it. If you behave yourself, stay within the law, do the normal things everybody does, nobody will even notice you are black, or brown or colored. You just get on with your life- don’t listen to all these people suffering from a siege mentality burdened with a victim mindset.

2. Nothing is free in America

Where is, really? Even in Freetown, there is no free lunch. But in America, moneyism is taken up a notch. Even breakfast at hotels, a perk that is a given in most hotels of Africa and other parts of the world is paid for. So, you walk in to the restuarant to have breakfast in a downtown hotel where you are lodging? $21- its not complimentary.

You need a luggage porter to carry your bags up to your 14th floor room? $10. Need to watch movies on your hotel room TV? You pay. Happy Hour? You pay. Need to drink that bottle of water in your hotel room refrigerator? $7. Need to get a trolley at the airport to move luggage from baggage claim to pick up zone? $4. Need breakfast on a local flight across America? $12. Want to have a beer on the same flight? $7

To check in a bag on a local flight? $25 (and they tell you, you are allowed two pieces of luggage), on an international flight? $100. Infact, who knows? Soon, checking your balance on an ATM machine in America, may be $3 (that is actually how much it costs to use a card on a machine that is not owned by your bank- compare Nigeria’s N60 switching costs per 3transactions or 25cents).

Go through a toll, built within the city centre severally? Each time, $8. Parking? $20 per hour. Infact, if you run a $50 tab by taking a taxi, you are expected to add the cabbie an extra $12.50 for being lucky enough to ride in his cab. They say it is tipping but it goes as outrageously high as 25%. A quarter of your check for gratification?

Common, even God asks for only 10% as tithe.

Depends on what you mean by "succesful" It is important to hae more than a superficial understanding of the issues which are not restricted to America. They are truly profound and have permeated us deeply in Africa from colonial times. The core issue is we have allowed ourselves to be persuaded that we are inferior. This is a collective thing.Individuals may protest otherwise but as a group it is all pervasive. We worship foreign gods and go to foreign lands on pilgrimage. We bleach our skins and perm our hair we even import Brazilian hair. We clamour for foreign coaches etc . Even here on Nairaland when we get into arguments with Ghanaians it is considered a point scoring abuse to ridicule their "blackness". So really we do not think properly and that is why I question what you mean by successful. Those engaging in flaunting "bling" are managing their self-loathing as best theyy can. Man has so many psychological devices in his toolbox to manage inadequacy. For me a succesful person is one who is awake and I can count on one hand the number I have met in my life. Even worse is not knowing that one is asleep.

Jesus Christ or Mohammed will NEVER solve our problems and as long as they are with us we shall continue to have problems

There they go again..Ohh the Black people that are killed are mostly killed by Whites?Hiann,Are they not killed by the stupid gang fight they engage in with each other..You still have not told me how the system is against them..You havent..Did any black Man request for student Loan and he wasnt given on the basis of he's race?Am very sure you yourself would be blaming one old woman in your village for not making it yet,cos that is what you Black people do..You havent told me how Black people have worse health system. How?I need Facts. How the institution discrimated against them..I guess you where not a baby when Obama contested an Won.Did he become President with the Votes of the Blacks Alone? He would not have won if all whites decided not to vote for him...So if someone hates you on the basis of your skin, that isnt institutionalized racism like it was in the Past...Dont you Nigerians also, hate your Hausa,Igbo and Yoruba Neighbours?..That is what i am saying,so please kindly get that into your Head

The Black Man has being known to always complain and ranting and that is exactly what you are saying..Ohh lest i forget,I should not be arguing with you,not at all..Since you said,Religion sells in the US than Nigeria, when Nigeria has about 5Pastors in the 10top list of richest pastors in the World..

Very good post, although , I have not travelled out of nigeria before.please don't compare american dollar to nigerian naira as a means to judge wHether thingss are expensiVe in america but cheap in nigeria because you have to consider exchange rate. If 1$ is equivalent to 1naira then there is no big deal with wether you are spending in america or nigeria, but as long as 1$ is equivalent to 200naira then you will see spending in america as expensive.

Oh comon that happens in Nigeria all the time, Nepotism in Universities and civil service clearly exists.
