Army names commander to lead war against Boko Haram


The Nigerian army has appointed a new commander to lead its operations against Boko Haram. The army announced the appointment on its Twitter handle on Sunday. “To meet up with the established time line of bringing to a successful conclusion the fight against terrorism and insurgency the Nigerian army has appointed a new commander for Operation Lafiya Dole,” it said. “He is Major General Yusha’u Mahmood Abubakar. Until this appointment, he was the commander of Nigerian army armoured corps. “Although it is a unified command coordinating three and seven divisions of the Nigerian army as well as other elements of Operation Lafiya Dole‎ one important point to also note is that this is the first time the Nigeria army in its history is deploying corps headquarters in the field.” ‎The army added that the appointment is with immediate effect.

The Nigerian Army is heading for a logistics and training nightmare. We operate more than 6 different APC variants, with an additional 2 if the U.S deal goes through. What happened to standardization of equipment? How will the military train its Mechanised Infantry battalions if it keeps importing several equipment types?
Also, why does the Army use so many uniforms? I can count at least 5 camo patterns employed by troops at the frontlines. This is a professional army, not a militia! Why so many uniforms? The Army should indoctrinate the new camo pattern and phase out the other desert patterns apart from the woodland pattern.
The third issue is about why the Nigerian Army never releases any videos from the frontlines. The NTA has been woeful so far. Sending a pot-bellied reporter in Kaftan as defence reporter speaks volumes about the quality of management in the NTA. As far as I'm concerned, the NTA should be privatised or scrapped. If the Army was smart about the media aspect of this war, the 72MSF should have its own youtube channel! Its the best unit in the Nigerian Army so why not "sell" it? The Army has lost touch with the present and believes that Press conferences is what P.R is ALL about.

It's high time the NA,DHQ and defense ministry see into encouraging our local industry and standardizing of equipment and hardwares!

I don't know what is wrong with our leaders why would a country as big as Nigeria will always keep on importing wears for his army, how do we encourage industrialization, boost our economy talk less of thinking of exporting to other countries?

I don't think the Proforce PF2 Leopard has an armour thickness that is more than the Igirigi APC. The Igirigi seems thicker. However the Leopard PF2 looks very very thick. Anybody firing at that armour with a 7.62mm is simply wasting his time.


If Proforce can modify the vehicle like I've described above, they would have more potential areas to market the vehicle. It simply is a perfect vehicle for that role and most of the additional systems i mentioned are currently in use with the Nigerian army.

I really doubt that its a doctrine issue. Growing up in the 90s, we were treated to combat footage from the ECOMOG campaign by NTA..I think its an issue of laziness on the part of the DHQ P.R team. Its really sad that grainy videos is as good as it gets. Also, Proforce makes good vehicles so why continue to import? What will happen when spare parts are needed for these foreign-made vehicles. Proforce should be contracted to build a standard IFV by now. A 30mm canon armed IFV with ATGM capability, in built ERA, thermal sights with tracked and wheeled versions. It CAN be done. All this importation is an indicator of a corrupt government whose officials will rather receive kickbacks from imports rather than develop its own industries.

US Sending Arms To Nigeria – Report


“There’s been a lot of misunderstanding on this issue before, during and after President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Washington. Let me be clear about a couple of things. One, we had worked very closely with Nigeria on the Leahy Amendment….The second piece of misinformation, which has been bandied about in (newspapers’) headlines, is that the US has lifted its arms embargo on Nigeria. There was never an arms embargo,” Entwistle said.
There are indications that the United States government is sending arms to the Nigerian military in its efforts to crush Boko Haram.

Facts that the US might start sending arms to Nigeria came on the heels of the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle’s revelation in an interview with one of our correspondents that the US government never placed arms embargo on Nigeria.

“There’s been a lot of misunderstanding on this issue before, during and after President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Washington. Let me be clear about a couple of things. According to Radio France Internationale, the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency records show that the country’s Department of Defence is set to transfer military material to Nigeria.

The RFI noted that a DSCA list of “so-called Excess Defence Articles” slated for Nigeria indicated that the US Army was about to transfer Caiman trucks, armoured vehicles designed “to defeat current and emerging threats,” according to their manufacturer, British-based BAE Systems.

The RFI added that the US government was also sending armoured vehicles known as MaxxPro MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected), made by Navistar Defence, an Illinois company, and Israeli-based Plasan Sasa.

It is unclear which Nigerian military units will receive the equipment, but the report said that the US government had confirmed that deliveries were pending.

When The PUNCH contacted the Department of State to confirm the types of military hardware the US would be sending and when deliveries of the weapons would be made, the newspaper was directed to contact Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence.

The spokesperson for the US State Department, Noel Clay,   via an email to The PUNCH, said, “The United States is set to expand its efforts to provide bilateral security assistance to Nigeria to counter Boko Haram. We will refer you to the Nigerian MoD to confirm the arrival of any US-origin material, but we can say that a key component of our security assistance to Nigeria in recent years has been training on the importance of respect for human rights and professional military conduct.

“Impunity for human rights violations by security forces not only tarnishes Nigeria’s reputation, but cannot prohibit us from engaging with involved units. We will continue to work with the Nigerian military to ensure they conduct disciplined military operations in accordance with clear rules of engagement and international law; treat all detainees humanely; allow access to independent monitors to all detention facilities; and hold accountable the perpetrators of unlawful violence.”

Meanwhile, a former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has said prayer is the best weapon against terrorism.

Gowon, who is also the founder of Nigeria Prays, a non-profit organisation, said this on Sunday at the National Prayer Rally, which held at the Olive Tree Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ikoyi, Lagos.

He observed that Boko Haram insurgency had been the most disturbing of all the problems of Nigeria.

“There is need for Nigerians to begin to change their orientation and begin to pray according to the will and purpose of God. The only way prayer can be of benefit to all is for us to ask that God’s will be done. We should pray that God will answer our prayers in way that it will be a blessing to all,” he said,

Gowon, as Nigeria’s ruler between 1966 and 1975, prosecuted the Nigeria-Biafra civil war.

He said the incessant suicide bombings in the country were enough cause for worry.

He said, “It is sad that some people wilfully take their lives and the lives of others. This is a great concern. There is no longer respect for lives. There is no regard for human dignity. This is worrisome. That is why I really want to appeal to Nigerians to raise an altar of prayer for Nigeria. We should consistently pray and constantly ask that God will cause his mercy to flow in our nation. The bloodletting is embarrassing and ungodly. It is time for us to raise our voices and cry to God for His mercy on our land.

“If God could save the Biblical Saul who later became Paul, I am confident that God can touch the lives of these people called Boko Haram. We know they are faceless and nobody knows their agenda. That is why I believe that it is only God who can really intervene in their lives and bring a change.”

Nigerian Army Appoints Commander For Final Offensive Against Boko Haram Insurgents


The Nigerian Army has appointed Major General Yusha’u Mahmood Abubakar to lead “Operation Lafiya Dole,” an offensive aimed at crushing Islamist insurgents operating in the northeastern zone of the country.  Lt. Colonel SK Usman, Army Spokesman

The appointment was contained in a short press release circulated late yesterday by the army. 

General Abubakar had previously served as the Commander of Nigerian Army Armored Corps. His appointment takes immediate effect.

The announcement stated that General Abubakar was appointed to head the military offensive in order to “meet up with the established time line of bringing to a successful conclusion the fight against terrorism and insurgency.” 

The military statement, signed by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, acting director of Army Public Relations, disclosed that the operation would be operate as “a unified command coordinating 3 and 7 Divisions of the Nigerian Army as well as other elements of Operation Lafiya Dole.” 

The statement pointed out that the appointment was “the first time the Nigerian Army in its history is deploying Corps Headquarters in the field.” 

Boko Haram insurgents have intensified suicide bombings and other armed assaults at different locations in the beleaguered northeastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The group has also launched attacks in such neighboring countries as Cameroon, Chad and Niger. 

President Muhammadu Buhari has been meeting with leaders of neighboring countries to coordinate counter-offensives to dislodge the insurgents.

Nigerian Army Attacked Fleeing Boko Haram Militants in Northeast


Nigeria’s army said it attacked Boko Haram militants fleeing from the northeastern Sambisa Forest late Tuesday after an air force bombardment.
“The fleeing terrorists in seven pick-up vans and some motorcycles mounted with assorted weapons such as rocket-propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns were decisively dealt with, killing quite a number of them,” the army said in posts on its Twitter account on Wednesday. “The troops have intensified their patrols and offensive actions against the terrorists in the area.”
The Nigerian army said last month there was no area in the northeastern state of Borno that was still under the control of Boko Haram, which has killed thousands of people and displaced over a million in its six-year campaign to impose its version of Shariah law on Africa’s most populous nation.

The rebels are still able to mount attacks and then retreat however, army spokesman Colonel Tukur Gusau said July 26.

Nigerian Army kills fleeing B’Haram members in Gwozaq


Nigerian Army have killed an unspecified number of Boko Haram fighters in Gwoza, Borno State, the Punch reports.

In an electronic mail on Wednesday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said that the rebels were not getting comfortable in the Sambisa Forest due to aerial bombardment by the fighter pilots of the Nigerian Air Force. So they had to make a quick exit.
Usman said that the insurgents were fleeing in seven pick-ups with motorcycles ‘mounted with assorted weapons such as rocket propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns’ when they ran into the encounter with the troops in Gwoza.

Usman, who did not disclose the exact number of the insurgents killed in the operation, said that the troops destroyed the vehicles and weapons and also recovered some items from them.

According to him, the items recovered include a vehicle, one motorcycle and two AK 47 rifles and large quantities of 7.62mm NATO and 12.7mm ammunition.’ He stated further that the troops were carrying out aggressive offensives and patrol activities in the area.

He said, “Troops of 26 Task Force Brigade in Gwoza, Borno State, yesterday evening engaged Boko Haram terrorists fleeing Sambisa Forest following continued aerial bombardment by the Nigerian Air Force.

“The fleeing terrorists in seven pick-ups and some motorcycles mounted with assorted weapons such as rocket propelled grenades and anti-aircrtaft guns were decisively dealt with, killing quite a number of them.

“The troops also destroyed their vehicles, weapons and motorcycles. They also recovered a vehicle, one motorcycle and two AK47 rifles and large quantities of 7.62mm NATO and 12.7mm ammunition.

The troops have intensified their patrols and offensive actions against the terrorists in the area.”

Also, the Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Dele Alonge, said in an electronic mail on Wednesday that the Air Force had intensified the strafing of the Sambisa Forest.

He said that the Air Force deployed F-7 fighter aircraft for the bombardment of the forest while the Alpha jet which was deployed in reconnaissance hit some of the moving vehicles of the insurgents.

Alonge added that the ATR-42 and Diamond-142 surveillance aircraft had been involved in surveillance operations over Damasak, Alafis and Sambisa.

“Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force has intensified the aerial bombardments of Sambisa forest. The F-7 fighter aircraft carried out interdiction mission over designated targets and suspected Boko Haram locations.

“Also, the Alpha Jet carried out reconnaissance and attacked some moving vehicles belonging to BHT. While, the Mi -24 and Mi-35 attack helicopters further carried out interdiction mission at some identified targets all in Sambisa Forest,” he said.

Civil war hero Alabi is dead
A civil war hero, Col. Yemi Alabi, is dead.

He died in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday.

Alabi was one of the commanders of the Nigerian Army during the Nigerian civil war.

He was part of the gallant troops that captured Port Harcourt in 1968.

After the death of Major Isaac Adaka Boro on May 18, 1968, in Okrika, he assumed command of the 19th Brigade hitherto commanded by Boro.

He was also given the additional responsibility of commanding the 15th Brigade formerly commanded by Col. Alani Akinrinade.

In the battle for Port Harcourt, he had orders to take Elele and Ahoada and hold them against all odds.

After the fall of Port Harcourt, he also had the responsibility of clearing the riverine areas of Abonema, Buguma and Ahoada.

Soon after that, he was moved to  the military hospital in Lagos for surgery because he had a bullet stuck in his head from the battle.

Gudumbali – Nigerian Army on Friday killed a number Boko Haram terrorists in Gudumbali town, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Sani Usman, has said.

According to a statement by the Nigerian Army Headquarters: “Troops of 7 Brigade have today entered and cleared Gudumbali town, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.”

“During the operation, quite a number of the terrorists were killed their weapons and equipment were destroyed.”

“The troops are currently doing clearance operations in the general area.”

“It should be recalled that the Nigerian Air Force has inflicted heavy damage on the terrorists camps within the general area last Monday.

“In a related development, troops of 5 Brigade Explosive Ordinance Devices (EOD) Unit while advancing towards Dikwa, ran into landmines buried by the terrorists.

“Unfortunately, two soldiers lost their lives, while two others were critically injured. The bodies of the two gallant soldiers have been evacuated, to the rear, while the other two wounded soldiers have also been evacuated and are receiving treatment at the military hospital.

“The unit also lost a Mowag Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) due to the buried landmine between old Marte and Kerenoa junction in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.

“Despite this sad event, the troops are not deterred as they continued their advance and pursuing the terrorists to their enclaves in Sambisa forest.

“Similarly, it is important to note that troops in the various formations and units in Operation LAFIYA DOLE are in high spirit and more determined to destroy the terrorists camps and enclaves.”

Impressive..The new N.A offensive is gaining ground..Right now, we cannot afford to let BH regroup..I think right now is the time to suspend telecom services in Borno and Yobe as was done during the Ihejirika era..This will enable troops isolate BH units, cut them off and destroy them. The days of attrition are over. .Gunships and IFVs backed by highly-mobile units will be the key..SF units can call in artillery strikes on BH camps while destroying the enemy's mobility. Tanks will slow down operations , so the should be employed only on the toughest targets. Mobility is key; the enemy is highly mobile. The N.A could have compensated for its lack of IFVs by deploying 200-400 hilux mounted Zpu-2s. Surplus Soviet stocks are all over the place.
