They were upgraded to Universities of Education.. which is a specialized institution for teachers' training like the colleges of Education albeit a more developed curriculum.

I don't see the point in this reversal

I have some questions for all of you.

1.Do you have the extra trillions of naira needed to upgrade the colleges of education to universities.?

2.Do you have the manpower needed for the newly upgraded universities? When we do not have enough lecturers for the original ones...talk-less of the private unis, or the new ones GEJ established?

3.Have you forgotten that the price of oil has dropped....and as such we have to cut our coats according to size?

Look.....education in Nigeria has serious funding problems. And unless we have the extra cash.....and the extra manpower....especially lecturers.....we cannot proceed with upgrading....or even establish new universities.

That is the problem....and even if GEJ was in charge...he probably would have reversed the decisions too.

So.....do you have any alternative idea? Must we establish schools and universities that we cannot cater for in the long term? Or would you chaps willingly pay school fees of up to N400000-500000 just so that these new universities you like can be properly funded?

Some of you Nigerians.....you like awoof....but you do not consider where the awoof is gonna come from. PDP and APC both.

Talk is cheap, I hope he will also revert the other universities created in the north by the past administration

why is he trying so hard to rubbish the achievements of his predecessor

Does he think Nigeria is his private estate where out of vengeance and retribution he can dish out orders and decrees without recourse to how it may affect the masses.. for Heaven sake the colleges of education were just upgraded to universities of education and still cater to the grooming teachers and other teaching oriented professions, y the reversal.. Y not equip the said universities, is government no longer a going concern??

Nigeria ntorrrr

If it remains Universities of education as you want it to be, then will there be any difference between Universities students and College students? at least you know the reason why they are in college of education and not university.

I do not know about that....but I daresay that it is going to be difficult finding money for all the universities run by government....because of falling oil prices...

And even before the oil prices fell.....govt in 2013 was telling ASUU that the N3 trillion promised in 2009 was no longer possible. Instead....it was now N1 trillion over 5 years. So far....only N200bn has been paid....the rest of the money is definitely not coming.

Whoever is going to be PMB's Education Minster is going to increase fees....and maybe close some schools down. Not because of hate...but because we do not have the money. And we never really did. Honestly....what pains me is past administrations (not just GEJ....even the Army and OBJ..) establishing universities with no thot for upkeep.

They are ignorant, don't blame them but pity them

there are so many bottlenecks in upgrading a college of Education to a University,
to those blaming the FG on this reversal, I'll refer them to make enquiry on the first case scenario I.e TASCE and TASUED.

I'm really saddened by this decision. many of these colleges have been running affiliate programs for several years. A major consideration in d upgrade was that these schools were already adequately staffed and at least 60% of their teaching staff were PhD holders. with funnel effect of those struggling to enter the existing universities one would have thought that this kinda policy would be sustained. This was one of the major achievements after several months of strike by lecturers on colleges of education. Baba should please reconsider this one, it's not political.

The ineptness can't continue, we approach, headlong into the abyss.

Do you have the money to upgrade these universities?

Do you?

The problem is funding for the upgrade. We do not have the money due to falling oil prices.

We also do not have enough lecturers....especially phd holders.

So...unless you have N10 TRILLION lying about somewhere.....this decision makes sense.

It is harsh....but the thing is....an upgrade....means there has to be funding.

And the problem is....we do not have the funds.

Wise decision, those schools aren't equipped enough to be labelled Universities
And you believe our universities which you may argue are equiped churn out graduates. It may surprise you to know that some of these colleges of education are even more equpped than some of the glorified secondary schools called universities.

That's a good move by the FG. We have enough universities but they need upgrade and also the only thing government need, is to upgrade the education colleges so that we can have good & quality teachers in government primary & secondary schools.

Ordinarily, there shoudn't be any diffference in the quality of education one must receive at any of this institutions. Whatever status is bears must not limit its equipment and structuring to meet standard educational needs..

However, in the context of the Nigeria educational structure and systems, with the ever present discrimination meted out to students from polytechnics and colleges of educations, there needs to be some adjustments, and i think this was what prompted the decision to the upgrade of this institutions to universities...

also this institutions; Alvan for example have being running affiliated programs with other universities(UNN in the case of Alvan) for many years now and already have the structures in place for upgrades.. so the policy reversal with all its political undertones is totally wrong

O.P VERIFY YOUR NEWS BEFORE YOU POST TRASH.THIS IS THE NEWS WE RECEIVED FROM OUR ACTING V.C WHO IS CURRENTLY ON A VISIT TO USA
GOODWILL MESSAGE FROM PROF OLUKOYA
OGEN TO ALL ARBICANS
Dear colleagues,
Greetings from Chicago, Illinois. Hope all of you
are well. I am fine here and the weather is
superb. There is tremendous progress regarding
the grant and other proposed collaborations.
Meanwhile, this is to quickly clarify our University
status. Contrary to the news making the rounds,
the FG has not outrightly
reversed our status, but only puts its
implementation on hold, ostensibly, pending the
enactment of the necessary legal
frameworks by the National Assembly.
Authoritative sources from Abuja and a scanned
copy of the FG memo sent to me expressly says
''Put on hold' and not
'reversal' This is in order to follow due process
and to make budgetary provision
for the new universities. Staff and students are
therefore urged to remain calm so that the legal
stage could be fast tracked with
the same tact, vigour and speed that brought
about the initial Presidential pronouncement last
May. The Chairman, CoDs, Dr Gbade Ikuejube,
has been directed
to continue to oversee the affairs of our great
institution until my return next week.
Sincere regards,
Prof Olukoya Ogen.
Prof Olukoya Ogen is currently in the United
State of America (USA) and he also in talk with
some Universities in USA on ways to collaborate
with AFUED.
A 20 Million Dollar Grant is also on the way. The
Professor of History is expected back to the
University Next week.

this colleges have doctors as lecturer same thing universities av. I believe DAT upgrading is good as it beneficial to d educational sector especially to younger ones in primary n secondary school. n to the lecturers too. don't forget that it also create jobs. don't worry about payment some university have been running with IGR.
Re: FG Reverts The Decision To Upgrade Colleges Of Education To Universities by sniyi1: 4:42pm On Aug 22, 2015
I think the excuse of funding is rather lame. Jonathan n his government stashed enough cash to take care of infrastructure in tertiary education through tetfund. many schools are yet to access 2013 funds for infrastructure. The only reason only 4 colleges qualified is because they are adequately staffed.
