AgrotConsult:
get quality birds with better growth performance from a reputable hatchery> adopt a customise feeding formulations with the inclusion of branded feed concertrate 40% cuz if u go by commercial bagged feeds your money will burn.> rearing up to 9wks n starting selling immediately cuz d longer u delay sales, d more expenses u accrue over time.> do u copy?
Which hatchery do u advise. I am thinking of Obj farms or CHI. I am planning to use topfeed. Which formulations do u advise. From my experience broilers don't get to ideal maturity and weight in nine weeks.

AgrotConsult please why do you see no need for the second course?

In Nigeria over 50% of the day old chicks are produced by foreign firms.

In South East there is no company that produces day old chicks, we still have to go to south west Nigeria to get it.

This is because of shortage of skills to operate a parent stock farm to produce the fertilised eggs in commercial bases.

That is day old chicks that can perform.

Also to produce feeds on commercial bases like vital feed you need the necessary skill and training.

Why are you against the training?

Can I get this training professional in Nigeria?

My ogas I greet you all, please I need some advice on how to go about my Xmas broiler sales. I noticed that market women prefer males cuz of it's big red attractive combs.... I was very disappointed with the broilers I got, it was 70% females(from Amo byng hatchery) and didn't weigh much upon all the feed it consumed, please which good hatchery is likely to have mostly male DOC? Secondly, with this rain and all, is it advisable to stock broilers now or should I wait till end of September? (even though am tempted to stock up cuz it's cheaper now, am scared the price might hike soonest) what can I add to their commercial feeds to save cost?

Since you are selling them by Xmas, i dont think you should be worry about any market women. you can sell off all you birds by adopting a simple market strategy.

Getting more 'roosters' is by luck and there is little or nothing one can do about it.

Rain should not be a determinant factor as long as you've mastered the act of brooding. What you should put into consideration are the number of weeks you will like to raise them and the expected body weight. Besides, i dont know what you called 'cheap' because broiler's DOC was sold #150 few weeks ago at Obasanjo farm(this is not cheap to me). Price will definitely drop by mid October.

As for the feed, you can start with broilers starter( Top feed) and make use of concentrate and maize when they start taking finisher.

The proccess is call 'brooding'. You give them heat during this period(first 3-5 days) during hot weather and (first 5-8 days) during cold weather.

Thanks for your response, why am bothered about the price increment is cuz I've heard pple say that it will soon go up to 200 and above........... From September. Please the maize, what percentage should I add to the commercial feed? which good hatchery would you recommend? And when do you advise I should stock for Xmas? (this is my first time Xmas sales) God bless

Yes, price may likely hit 200 or above especially during the first half of September, but will definitely come down after.

Maize 60% ( commercial concentrate please).

I can give you 98% assurance on Obasanjo and Ajanla farm DOC. Their birds are very strong, eat well and dont die anyhow.

as for stocking, there are two type of birds in the markets during Xmas, Economy birds and Rich man birds. Economy birds are the ones you sell between #1000-2500 while the rich man ones goes between #2500-5000. It now depends on which you really want to do. Rich man birds should be stock between August to mid-September. You can stock the economy birds as late as 2nd half of October.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. We prefer the Economy birds not only because of our large stocks nature but also the following;

* Cheaper DOC during this period.

* keeping birds for long time increase the chances of deceases outbreak.

* You sell them off very fast( looking at Nigeria economy, there are very few people that can afford/pay 3000-5000 for a bird.

Sure. the birds looks OK and healthy. You may however need to weigh them to confirm if they are close to 2.5 which shd be the target weight at their age.

Hello guys, please does anyone know of a good hatchery in the lekki/epe area? I am looking to get some broilers (preferably month old) as I have never done this before and looking to start with those. Any info you have will be greatly appreciated. I have been offline for quite sometime now (lots of personal things going on), I will catch up on the thread in due time. Sorry if someone has already asked for this information. Thanks in advance! If you also know the market price for the month old please share thank you.

Hi fellow farmers, I stocked 300 DOC pullets on July 27th and I failed to give them their 2nd Gumboro vaccine on the 28th day. On Sunday, I noticed 6 dead birds and my vet told me more was to come. Today, my birds are left 70.

Please, let all farmers take note of this.

Sorry for the loss. however if you have been following this thread closely you would have prevented the mortality by administering iodine immediately .

I doubt if Farmergiant hatches it's own chicks. They're likely acting as distributors for one of the bigger hatcheries. So, you can do yourself a world of good by asking them how they source their DOCs and then share whatever response you get here for better advice.

So, you missed gumboro on Day 28 and you didn't give them on Day 29,30,31 etc until they started dying. Your vet warned you that the mortality would be more but didn't advise you on what to do...Seems more to me like you wanted to see if you could evade vaccinations rather than a honest miss.

You've said it all! Thanks. Someone told me about Max chicks yesterday, and after seeing the 6-7weeks broilers, I was astonished... Will try see if I can post the pics here. I will go with economy chicks, from the analysis you gave, It's the best for a newbie like me. To be able to test the ground.
