ExInferis:

Research, yes. No arguments on that. But we were talking mobile devices. On that field in R and D Apple is quite spendy and innovative. Let's review the innovations, shall we?

Hardware
1. Gorilla glass. Apple helped Corning revive the strengthened glass business.
Wtf is this? Where did you read this from? Samsung has being using Gorilla glass since the era of Galaxy S1
2. Six degrees of freedom sensors via accelerometers, gyros, magnetometers.
This started way back in the era of Nokia
3. Proximity Sensing
Nokia
4. Retina display
Grammar? What does Retina display mean? So Samsung stole display from Apple? i don die shocked grin Apple has used marketing term to take your cash away. No matter how "Retina display wanna be" it can never be like AMOLED from Samsung. Btw, the same retina that is 750p. 2011 technology
5. Glass panel on back
This is innovation right? Well, sony has being having Glass back on their phones for years
6. Pentaband antenna integrated into the frame
Stolen from HTC, check below
7. Liquid metal components
Major OEMs do this
8. sealed battery
Innovation right
9. Touch ID
Grammer. Finger print is finger print and mind you, Motorola Atrix is the first phone with finger print scanner
10. 3D Touch
Stolen from Samsung S4. Its the same as Air View and Air Gesture
11. Taptic Engine
Its on most phones

What then followed were a string of companies, the most visible of which is samsung, that suddenly began copying everything the iphone did and is doing and claim to be original. What were samsung phones like before the iphone? What was android like before iphone?

I really laugh when people shout Samsung copies Apple. What does Apple do? They don't copy right.. Their newest iPad pro is a rip of Surface Pro and their "pencil" rip off of "S pen" from Samsung

see the attached images:

Pic 1 was the original android prototype, the Sooner, running the very first android. see how much it looks like a blackberry?

Pic 2 shows the G1 and its icons and interface looking very much like the iphone

Pic 3 shows the Galaxy S and how much it copied the iphone, leading to the lawsuit samsung was ordered to pay Apple for infringement

Pic 4 Shows how the Galaxy S6 looks a lot like the iphone 6, including ripping off the Touch ID Sensor mechanics, and even the earpods.

we can argue about this all day, and i dont even like Apple, but sometimes i get woried when people forget who started this recent mobile trend and accuse Apple of not innovating. every Android manufacturer competes on specs alone, while waiting for apple to release something new so they can all rip it off.

Whats the new thing Apple has released since the demise of Steve Jobs? Apple is the greatest copier at the moment. From OS to Harware to Features

everyone used to make fun of Apple's lack of sdcards, sealed battery etc. Now every OEM is copying these features, even samsung which was more vocal than the rest.

Samsung debuted thier newest phones without sd cards simply cos their SOC Exynos 7420 doesn't support it(UFS built in) and they removed the battery to make the phone slimmer. Their next phone would come up with sd cards cos SD 820 supports both UFS and sd card.

Macbooks are cloned (HP Envy series, Asus zenbooks etc) with everyone going Unibody, Chiclet keyboard, wide glass multitouch touchpad etc.

All the designs on Macs is stricly thought by Apple and they didn't copy anything

Oh, and Samsung Pay?! omg, how original. Just copy of Aplle Pay. they even stole the finger enrollment animation from Apple!!

[b]Do you have sense at all. Samsung bought Loop Pay. What did you expect them to rename it? Now tell me since you know more.. Wasn't Google wallet in existence before Apple pay at all and Samsung Pay is even better and more recognised cos it doens't need only NFC to work

Here are the stolen features Apple blantantly stole on Android and ported it to iOS 9
1. Picture-in-Picture. Samsung calls this Pop-Up Play
2. Spotlight. Google now makes the searches completely, and Apple stole it just like that
3. iOS Notes. Google calls it Google Keep
4. New Apps. HTC calls it Blinkfeed
5. Low-power Mode
6. Siri Reminders stolen from Android
7. Split Screen & Multi-tasking
8. Contextual searches: Google Now on Tap
9. Smarter watch faces: Android Wear

Here are the stolen features Apple blantantly stole on Android/Samsung and ported it to iOS 8
1. Typing suggestions
2. Support from third Party keyboard
3. Wigets
4. Actionable Notifications
5. Okay Google’, conveted to 'Hey Siri’

Here are the stolen features Apple blantantly stole on Android/Samsung and ported it to iOS 7
1. Notification Center
2. Enhanced Sharing Options and Peer-to-Peer WiFi Sharing
3. How safari displays its opened tabs
4. Cards-Based Multitasking View stolen from Samsung
5. Camera Collections and Photo Management

Did you know Apple stole Swipe to unlock from NEONODE?
Did you know iPhone 6 is a rip off of HTC One?

“If you see a stylus, they blew it.”

"No one would want to buy a phone with a big screen."

"In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it."

1. Gorilla glass. Apple helped Corning revive the strengthened glass business.

ollah1:

Wtf is this? Where did you read this from? Samsung has being using Gorilla glass since the era of Galaxy S1

'It was brought into commercial use when Apple asked Corning for a thin, toughened glass; it was used in the new iPhone.'
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorilla_Glass#History

2. Six degrees of freedom sensors via accelerometers, gyros, magnetometers.

ollah1:

This started way back in the era of Nokia

built into the n95, but not enabled for orientation switching until after the iphone.

"The first smartphones to feature built-in accelerometers–among them, the Sony Ericsson W910i and the [b]iPhone[/b ]–didn’t begin arriving atmarket until 2007-2008, right around the time the companies building them began filing motion-interface patents of their own."

"The first phone with a gyro that matters was the iPhone 4."

3. Proximity Sensing

ollah1:

Nokia

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/04/in-a-win-for-apple-motorolas-proximity-sensor-patent-ruled-too-obvious/

4. Retina display

ollah1:

Grammar? What does Retina display mean?

high pixel density screen, as first seen on the iphone 4

ollah1:

So Samsung stole display from Apple?

Not the term, but the principle. every phone that comes after the iphone 4 touting pixel density on a 'retina' level owes it to the iphone 4.

ollah1:

i don die shocked grin Apple has used marketing term to take your cash away.

now you sound like a douchebag

ollah1:

No matter how "Retina display wanna be" it can never be like AMOLED from Samsung.

Apples to oranges. retina display refers to pixel density, amoled refers to a display technology. completely different things. you can have high density pixels on either lcd or amoled.

ollah1:

Btw, the same retina that is 750p. 2011 technology

every technology eventually becomes obsolete. your 1080p is being supplanted by 2k, and then 4k. As at when the iphone 4 came out, no other phone had its resolution and pixel density. After the iphone 4, every OEM started packing up the pixels and touting resolution.

5. Glass panel on back

ollah1:

This is innovation right?

It is. So innovative, it formed one of the key features that defined the term "premium". And didnt it form one of the signature innovations of the Galaxy S6/Edge and Note 5?

ollah1:

Well, sony has being having Glass back on their phones for years

Care to mention which ones, specifically?

6. Pentaband antenna integrated into the frame

ollah1:

Stolen from HTC, check below

The iphone 4 was released in 2010; the HTC One M7 in 2013. The iphone antennas were integrated into the steel frame while the HTC M7 has its antennas hooked via cables from a daughter board to the cover on the back in a traditional design. Different things.

7. Liquid metal components

ollah1:

Major OEMs do this

Such as who and who, in what components, and before or after Apple, which bought the major developer of Liquidmetal?

8. Sealed Battery

ollah1:

Innovation right

Absolutely. Since it allowed Apple to design consistently thin phones, before everyone else got on the bandwagon, including samsung. You yourself said as much with regards to samsung's S6. Apple started the trend right from the original iphone.

9. Touch ID

ollah1:

Grammer. Finger print is finger print and mind you, Motorola Atrix is the first phone with finger print scanner

Nope. The underlying technologies differ, in that the Atrix technology is the traditional swipe type of mechanism similar to the one on the Galaxy S5. Apple innovated the technology with an optical sensor and suddenly samsung, huawei, meizu et al hopped onboard. There's no denying this.

10. 3D Touch

ollah1:

Stolen from Samsung S4. Its the same as Air View and Air Gesture

Stop embarrassing yourself. 3D Touch is pressure sensitive interaction based on how much pressure you apply to the screen. Air View uses the proximity sensor to calculate contact-less gestures.

11. Taptic Engine

ollah1:

Its on most phones

Bullcrap. this first appeared on the New Macbook and the Apple Watch, and now the iPhone 6S. however you're free to name such other phones it appears on since "Taptic Engine" is an Apple trademark.

ollah1:

I really laugh when people shout Samsung copies Apple.

it does. Judge Judy Koh ordered samsung to pay Apple millions in copyright infringement.

Considering the ipad pro is just a bigger ipad, and the ipad existed way before the surface, i must disqualify your claims.

ollah1:

Bottom line:

Apple is making a ton of money, currently it has more cash than any other company, more revenue and more profits. While Apple is making billions, Samsung is losing money, and is on the verge of downsizing its workforce. The last samsung phone that made any money was the Galaxy S4! Says a lot about innovation, right?

You thought wrong. Im in the habit of kissing arses to MAKE money. I dont kiss arses to SPEND money. So there.

I dont know what you mean by innovation. To me 64bit is innovative, motion co-pro is innovative, Taptic Engine is innovative, 240 frame slomo is innovative. Except if you're comparing with samsung and consider a range of gimmicks as innovation.

Look! A curved screen! Yay, go science!

Pah.

As for copying: well, who was found guilty of copying and ordered to pay? Samsung!

Apple started the whole craze: accelerometers, gyroscopes, proximity sensors, sealed batteries, gorilla glass, capacitive multitouch, pinch to zoom, slide to unlock, glass panels, etc. Hell even the current samsung offerings look so much like the iphone, including sealed batteries, no Sdcards, even the earpods.

Well, there once was a little device called the Apple Newton which had a touchscreen and stylus, way back in the early 1990s.

If it says "Pro", it's not meant for you. In any case the iPad mini is very much cheap for all you scrooges. Or you can try a Galaxy Note.

Goodluck having the Z5 premium set the world on fire. How many UHD TVs have you even seen? Or 4k content? 4k is overkill on a mobile device, except for when VR goes mainstream. And the Z5 is 4k only some of the time. For most usage it dumbs down to good old 1080p, so nyah!

And the iphone, with its meager 1gb and dualcore, is more fluid than your octacores (decacore is coming) and 4gb rams. That's smart design! So double nyah!!

No one buys their hardware just for specs. When steve jobs introduced the original iphone, the emphasis was on software. In that period Nokia was king of the hill, and what was Nokia known for? Killer hardware, poor software? So where's Nokia now? Same thing happened to Blackberry.

While the android world is littered with behemoths packing powerful and excessive hardware (and still lag) just to accommodate an OS centered around a virtual machine (Dalvik and ART), Apple nimbly gets by with modest hardware and clever software.

Why do you think Nexus devices focus more on pure android than raw specs?

And dude, windows cant be optimised for crap. You optimize based around a target hardware combo. Wintel is based around diversity of hardware, so how do you optimise for the myriad of hardware choices and OEM idiosyncrasies out there?

Apple is neither xiaomi, nor is it samsung. It doesnt have to cater for a broad spectrum of customers simply by designing no-margin products (xiaomi), or tossing everything haphazardly at the wall to see what sticks (samsung)

Apple is Apple, catering for people with taste and without the time to start messing around with memory cards, drivers, root and whatnot. Apple is the Burberry of phones. Apple is the Bentley of gadgets. Those without style, substance or purchasing power can step into those Tecno booths!

I make my purchasing decisions baswd on need and budget. Ive a mixture of devices, my next purchase will be the Elephone Vowney. I dont buy specs nor brand. I buy what i feel serves my purpose.

Oh, and those sheep? Totally outclassed the lifeless droids.

yes sir.

martineverest:

u ve not answered d question i earlier asked.

I did., You were too lazy to read.

martineverest:

WHY DIDNT APPLE USE OSX(MAC OS) ON IPAD PRO?

OS X is a desktop OS requiring desktop chipsets, is not well suited for mobility, all day battery life, slim form factors etc. The OS X interface was also not designed for touch.

To answer your question, go back to when steve jobs announced the ipad. The reason for its being, says steve, was that there must be a 3rd category of device that sits INBETWEEN a laptop and a moibile phone, borrowing the best features of each device and making it better. Ipad was designed primarily as a CONSUMPTION device, not as a PRODUCTIVITY device. The focus is on entertainment (music, video, games, reading, email, browsing etc)

The productivity additions are a bonus when Apple realized it can adapt existing productivity suites as mobile chips get better to suit the mobile category so people can get some work done ON THE MOVE. it was not designed to replace traditional computing unless your entire computing activities fall within the scope of the consumer use cases described above.

martineverest:

and WHY DID APPLE PLAGIARISE MICROSOFT SURFACE TABLET?.

Plagiarism refers to stolen WRITTEN works, not technological cloning. i however know what you mean: Why Did Apple Copy the SUrface Pro?

But how? By being a tablet? By having a stylus? By having a keyboard?

1. By being a tablet: Ok, let's see. The Surface came AFTER the ipad. The surface (both Pro and RT) were announced in 2012, ipad was announced in 2010, 2 years BEFORE the surface. so who copied whom?

2. By having a stylus: Third party capacitive styli were available for the ipad since before the surface was announced. Apple also had a stylus in the Newton back in 1993. Also, if this forms the bedrock of your argument, can we also say Microsoft copied Wacom tablets?

3. By having a keyboard: All kinds of 3rd party keyboard cases were available for ipad that integrated the keyboard into the jacket and used bluetooth since before the surface.

Please see pics attached.

I agree with some of what you say, but there are a few things we need to get right, and i thus refer to your points above.

1. I dont understand how Apple can rip off a product that came as a reaction to Apple. The iPad was invented BEFORE surface, so truth be told, surface ripped off iPad first. You'd have made a better point if you said Apple copied the Samsung Galaxy Note 12 inches.

2. The iPhone 6s disappointed a lot of people, yes, even I said so in my blog. But let's be honest: Since when has any iPhone S series being radically different from the previous one? First was iPhone 3G and the 3GS; then iPhone 4 and iphone 4S; then iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S; and now iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. Every "S" entry in the series as an iterative product that only advances the previous model in bits and pieces, for the same price point. Apple only updates the iPhone radically on a 2 year cycle.

The problem is we expect new crazy stuff every year, which is not possible given costs of technology, R and D, hiring engineers, patents, commercial considerations, and the need to avoid gimmicks.

what Apple has done is to make slight innovations behind the scene, while we're accustomed to regarding hardware redesigns or specs as innovations. Compare with the world of android: what most fandroids consider innovation are just specs. how is the nexus 6 more innovative than the nexus 5? everything is iterative, especially in the android world. Only samsung makes some efforts, but sadly most of those efforts are marketing gimmicks that have little real-world usability.

Maybe if we lowered our expectations, and stop narrowing "innovation" to physical designs and specs, we wont be so disappointed whenever apple makes minor upgrades to their product lineup.

I also ranted a fairly great deal on my blog about the seeming deception within the context of a huge insult to their fans. But with hindsight its the fans who make too many assumptions thus overfed their expectations since Apple didnt market anything before the announcements.

1. The reason why apple succeeded in changing the mobile device market was that they realised that software was the ish. Hardware to apple is secondary. During an event Steve Jones once said that the IPod is essentially a software and that's why it's different from other mp3 players.

2. Steve was crazy about designs. He was a design major and knew the importance of Good design to successful products.

3. The user experience of every Apple device is premium. No doubt.

However, competitors would not fold their arms and watch you take over the market. If that happens, the monopoly isn't good for the consumer. So Google, Microsoft and Samsung are there to make sure Apple doesn't loose sight that in the market, the consumer is king.

Innovation is broad. It ranges from design to hardware and even software. Everyone innovates. And that's why innovation is different from invention. Sadly only few companies invent new stuff these days.

Also note that innovation is taking an existing product, good or service and improve on it while invention is creating a new product, good or service which is there first of its kind.

In this parlance, everyone is allowed to copy someone.. Just that you must be smart about it.

In the android world, hardware is king but in Apple world, software rules. To each his own.

If only there was a way to port iOS to my S4.

Everything on the announcement is so meh, galaxy tab and surface pro had a pen for like ages, the 3d touch thing is just a form of right click.
if they had put all these specs and ram in the iPad air 10 inch screen plus the iPad air price this would have been d best consumer tablet ever.but at its current price u can get a surface pro 3(Intel core i5,258gb internal memory) or a macbook air both with better gaming and productivity
Re: iPhone 6s And iPad Pro Announced by Nobody: 3:31pm On Sep 13, 2015
ok...lets get this straight the ipad pro is a good device but a straight balant rip off of microsoft's surface pro 3 design while the iphone 6s is a phone which is fucking overpriced for its specs

Dia are 2 major owners of stylus patents in d world:wacom(samsung pen and cintiq are products of dis)and n-trig(apple pencil and surface pen),which is owned by microsoft.

Both N-Trig and Wacom own patents on mostly pens relying on a digitizer that sense varying levels of pressure sensitivity. the core idea of a stylus goes back thousands of years, so just because it looks like a pen and draws on screen doesnt mean the technologies must be the sam and stem from only 2 companies. the Apple Pencil uses entirely different sets of technologies and sensors along with clever software to detect tilt, texture, force and motion and have nothing to do with N-Trig and Wacom. Miscrosoft also makes its own stylus separate from N-Trig's technology for its Surface Hub. Apple DOES NOT pay Microsoft royalties for its stylus since Apple was granted patents for its own stylus.

martineverest:

incase u dönt know, apple pencil is worth $99,while surface pen is $50.the $49 diff Is what apple pay microsoft 4 using microsoft intellectual property.

martineverest:

Moreover, ipad pro smart cover is worth $169,while surface cover is worth $130,the diff of $39 is what apple pay microsoft

Nope. Apple is not using Microsoft patents for the keayboard. The iPad Pro keyboard uses technology from the dome switch and scissor-style mechanism pioneered by Apple in the New Fanless Macbook. I dont know about the connection technology, but Apple was first with magnet connections from the macbook's Mag Safe connector, and the iPad 2's Magnet alignment tech in the Smart Covers.

martineverest:

....with all diz,i wont be suprised to see iphone 7 ane ipad pro 2 come with 'continuum' feature

No way. The iPad and the Mac are 2 distinct product lines; marrying them into a sort of omni-device will only cannibalize sales. there's no compelling reason why the mac should not exist alongside the ipad, or why OS X must be integrated into iOS. Both products serve diferrent needs. like i keep saying oevr and over, there is no reason to integrate OSX into iOS as this will only result into a clusterfuck of a confusing device.

With the whole drive towards Iot (Internet of Things) and Smart Devices, mobile OS/platforms such as android and ios are the only options as long as such smart devices require low power CPU and small thin form factors.

martineverest:

u talked about apple's newton, dont 4get dat apple took ideas 4rm windows xp tablets dat were made in early 2000.

This is quite true but only as applies to the ipad. in steve jobs' biography Isaacson mentioned how a bragging microsoft engineer annoyed jobs so much the Apple ceo swore to teach microsoft how to make a good tablet.

However, the Newton project was begun in 1987, and is considered one of the early pioneers of pen computing and handwriting. Palm, which looked like the newton,, came along in 1996. So, even the windows tablets which began life in 1999 came AFTER the newton. The first Windows XP Tablets were released in 2002!

martineverest:

Apple refused to make osx(tho, not torch base, she shud av taken a clue 4rm microsoft 4 merging ARM and x86 into windows 10 continuum)

Haha wrong! Microsoft MOST CERTAINLY DID NOT merge x86 and ARM. When surface was annoounced, microsoft presented two distinct hardware line ups: the Surface RT which was ARM-based and ran Windows RT, and the Surface Pro which was x86 based and ran full windows 8.

Later microsoft killed off the ARM Windows RT line of products to focus only on the non-Pro Surface 3 (x86, Intel Atom), and the Surface Pro 3 (x64, Intel Core i series).

Continuum is a software mechanism by which the windows OS switches from a desktop UI to a tablet UI, either manually or on-demand via triggers. So you can go from deskto mode, to tablet mode.

martineverest:

d OS of ipad pro because it will jeopardise d future of ios devices, macbook and macbook air;and reinforce windows dorminance(since most macbook users are fund of installing windows in dia system) especially in enterprise market

Hardcore and devoted OS X users hate seeing windows. The whole idea behind OS X is to avoid windows.

The people who use windows on Macs are the recent converts who migrated from windows to OS X but need some legacy app while they transition. They thus run windows by dual booting using BootCamp, or run it virtually via hypervisors such as VmWare, Parallels, or VirtualBox.

No true Mac fan would be caught dead running windows.

I guess u also know dat apple is also waiting 4 microsoft to launch its revolutionary augumented reality device,HOLOLENS,before jumping on microsoft patents to produce its own.

Man, im quite impressed with Hololens. more than i am with Oculus Rift!

It's quite possible that Apple may go into VR and AR, but only when the market for these so far niche products mature. But microsoft and Apple now are hardly competing, since they both give their OS for free: both aiming to rope people into their respective ecosystem. Like i said earlier, Google is now the common enemy, with its Android competing with Apple iOS; and Google Search, App engine and Google Docs competing with microsoft's Bing, Azure, and Office 365 respectively.

It's a tag team deathmatch: Apple and microsoft versus google and Amazon. (yes, Amazon! Apple TV is competing with Amazon FireTV and Apple may soon begin original content to beat out Amazon Prime streaming. Also, Amazon AWS EC2 is competing directly with Windows Azure)

Yeah, excess competition is harmful and that's a lesson samsung needs to learn, because their obsession with Apple is leading them to make costly mistakes rather than facing their real competition: the Chinese gang of xiaomi, huawei, zte, lenovo, oppo, OnePlus, and elephone.

Right now im working with some medical consultancy outfit to design a hybrid cloud platform using Azure to help HMOs gather data, from there im pushing for Big Data so that we can better map out patient profiles and predict risk. Exciting times!

Azure is to me tje best thing out of microsoft.

one thing people dont know with apple products is it's not meant to be complex, just simple and fast. 1gb ram is more than enough(it's not android). 720p is enough(how does 4k display help your phone?). we all want more, but apple knows that we need less and like is better. you asked for more and you got the Galaxy S6, yet you're still asking for more. don't hate apple.

Its the future, right? Azure and OpenStack, i swear by them. One of the Discos here have a great Hybrid platform for their billing, and yours truly is playing a part.

Trying to get into Hadoop, Django and MapReduce for when Big Data/Machine Learning hits big in Naija.

There's tons of resources on the web, including youtube. Use it wisely.

Cheers.
