marketing jobs would have u talking excessively, spending most of ur time under the sun as you try to convince people to patronize your product

I will rather set up a small business than be a marketing officer or salesman for an entity.

The state of the economy + the no bank credit facilities in the country makes it harder.
Even when people love your product, they can't afford it -- they are fundamentally financially handicapped.

Imagine a whole state's civil service owed 6 months salary! undecided

In a financially buoyant economy, people buy things they don't even need.

I once did a 'street hawking' marketing job for a company during one of the annual trade fairs in Lagos.

Yes, it is tiring just as any other work can be.

If you have a passion for meeting people (whether they buy or products/services or not), you'll find marketing easier.

If you also read wide and upgrade your knowledge about marketing, you'll find it easier.

There's a book by Dale Carnegie, I can't remember the title well now.. How To Influence People (something like that).

It's cool marketing but not for the faint hearted and lazy ones.

My two cents.

Because people doing marketing job don't know wot marketing entails. I read marketing and d way i approach a client will never be d same way graduates of engineering do. Another tin i observed here is dat people criticise marketing job here if ordinary microfinance bank advertise 4 marketing officer position, u will see lawyers, doctors, engineering, accountants applying 4 dat position making it difficult 4 us dat know marketing and passion 4 sales. My advice is dat people should go and practice their professions and leave marketing 4 us. Thanks.

The answer is simple: We the Nigerian graduates are simply lazy; we don't want to associate with 'dirty' consumers and 'rag-tag' end product users. All we want is EXECUTIVE & CORPORATE air conditioned office with a PC, Table & Executive leather chair for taking selfies.

Personally, I believe marketing jobs are tailor-made for drop-dead beautiful women wink ironically u can make more money in marketing than a 9to 5 job; it all depends on your social skills and gender.

I'm a person that likes exploring different options and always wanted to try out a marketing job though I don't have any tangible experience in the field. Everybody I've spoken with has said that career choice is a no go area. That brings me to the question 'why is marketing so dreaded by Nigerian graduates?' To the extent that a colleague told me he would rather remain unemployed than take up a marketing job. Please I need to read you opinion and maybe nairalanders can please share their marketing experience.
u will hawk around the whole lagos, and get 20-30 pay. the employers wud never put his children in such jobs. do it at ur peril.

Very insightful
MosakuAW:

Simple! Just because marketing jobs in Nigeria is hell. Your employers gives you targets that are unrealistic and they expect you to performs within set days or month.

Marketing of physical products might not be so stressful compare to marketing of services. Imagine marketing of Coca-cola and marketing of Life insurance policy.

Marketing in Nigeria: People you are marketing the products to, sees themselves as king and see you as slave, believes that buying from you safes your job and they use that as yard stick to ask for a favour in return. (female marketers)
