Well, even if you have assessed that amount of candidates, I am not too bothered because I wasn't among those that messed up. If the job description wasn't specific to a discipline, I probably would have applied.

I am good. Just waiting for my luck to shine

I havent come across anyone in nairaland who's unintelligent. We may disagree on politics, violently even, but such people as described are alien to me, and ive been here since inception.

Maybe the jobs section is full of no-good touts? Dunno cos I've no business (pun intended) there.

Bros, this is not "dem say" oh. If i upload some apllications here you wont believe it. Its truly shocking.

I agree with you completely! Actually, I was going to open a thread on this same issue. I have just not had the right time plus my network has been fighting with me for sometime now.

I had to advertise three openings for a growing organisation some 2months back. The result brought tears to my eyes. I could just imagine what recruiters go through and why some graduates will remain unemployable.

I'll come back to this thread in the fullness of time and share more experiences.

Bro please I'll like to know what a cover letter is. Thank-you.

The problem most graduates have is "proof-reading". It happens to me a lot and it could be that most sentences come into your mind instantaneously, faster than you can write.

When I proof-read, you'd be amazed by what you'd constructed initially and would feel it's been watered-down when major changes are exerted.

Needs an overhaul for what?

If you mean better packages for educationists and infrastructures,I'll agree with you

But if it is based on op's observations that exposes the lack of personal development/capacity building in our youth,

You may be wrong!. No one taught Booker.T Washington(for a period) and Abe Lincoln(also for a period) all these!!

The internet is there for all!!!. Let's empower ourselves by utilizing these free resources available on the internet!!

Touche!

I always tell my peers that I've learnt a lot on nairaland than the four walls of the school. It all boils down to self-development and kind of things you expose yourself too.

Sincerely, what it takes a man to be educated in this internet world is just a click on a web-page.

I used to abbreviate a lot but I learnt not to from my boss two years ago. Since then, no matter how long or short the post/message is, I abbreviate not even the habit has encroached to text message that costs per page.

Recently, i decided to conduct an interview and select some candidates who might be working with my organization. Currently we are trying to expand our operations and see how we can get new leads and probably close more deals. And from my survey, there are hundreds and possibly thousands of unemployed graduates here in Nairaland so i decided to concentrate on recruiting from here.

Now because of the nature of the job and also with a view in cutting cost around physical recruitment exercise, I decided to conduct the whole process online.

567 applications where received. I had to employ the services an outside consultant to help with the process which i also fully participated. Below are my shocking experiences with job seekers in this forum. I pray they read this and improve on themselves.

1. CV and cover letter.
I remember explicitly asking for their CV and cover letter to be forwarded to a particular email address. A huge percentage of the applicants just sent an empty email with their CV as an attachment. Not even an application letter. In case you don't know, a very quick assessment can be done on you by just reading your application or cover letter. You don't just attach your CV and forward to an email address without a cover letter. It means you are not serious and you may NEVER get called for an interview.

2. Many do not even know what they are applying for.
For an example you are asked to apply for an administrative position. The subject of your email should not be "My CV". This is so annoying and disgusting. Those that manage to write a cover letter do not even make reference to the job position they are applying for.

3. Lack of communication skills.
Now it is not enough to have a degree, you must learn to communicate. I sent out a pre-interview questionnaire to selected candidates and i just couldn't believe what i saw. So many job seekers do not know how to communicate and speak simple and clear English language. If you want to stand a better chance in job haunting, learn how to communicate.

4. Words abbreviations
This is a very big problem. Social medial is good but i think it's now becoming a major problem. With the use of BBM, whatsapp, Facebook chat, etc, Nigerians are now addicted to abbreviating words. You see things like 'u', 'k', 'comin', etc. And in case you dont know it, this can cause a very big problem for you. A lot of candidates get disqualified because of this. Learn to write properly when communicating with someone. Stop being in a hurry to pass along your message.

5. Checking of emails.
As a job seeker, you should always check your emails. Recruiters dont just send text messages, they also send emails. I did not screen alot of people because they did not check their emails to see if any information has been passed to them. You must always be on the look out. Dont submit your applications and go relaxing.

These are some of the experiences i had recruiting here. Out of 567 applications, i could not pick up to 20 candidates as a result of all these. Sometimes, i begin to wonder if the problem is lack of jobs or laxity on the part of the applicants because i am so shocked and surprised that our graduates are this way.

Well, I believe you should get cover letters since you specifically requested for cover letters. But, personally, I don't get the fuss about cover letters. A CV should do. If you want to know more about the applicant, invite him/her for an interview. Shikena!

Our system of education has nothing to do with the failure of one's intellects......most nigerians dont believe in research,
they have this notion that their cv speaks for its self in an interview
and then they goes home blaming our educational system for their individual failure......nice one op

OP, I feel your pain. I have also posted a few job openings here too, and sat on recruitment panels a number of times. What one comes across is disheartening. As far as Nairaland goes, it's not really surprising. You only need to read some of the brainless, unintelligent and downright absurd comments some people make here to know that we have a real problem on our hands in this country. There is a dearth of rational thinking, and I often wonder if comprehension is still being taught in our schools. It really is a sorry situation.

What is the ideal way? If the job posting says "Send resume and cover letter ." So, should one send a cover letter as an attachment or copy and paste it into the body of the email?

@ OP.....you can't be pointing to the speck in the eyes of others while you have a log in yours, you'll do well to come own up and correct some of the blunders you made in your post, you are as well guilty of what you accused those applicants for. This is the double standard some hiring people display and it's hard for me to keep quiet when i see these things. Some act like the life of applicants is in their hands. I very well agree there's a problem with the way we communicate in our times but i think when you live in a glass house, you should be mindful of what can happen if you throw stones.

@ JesusDWay

I have to disagree with you because EVERYTHING the poster said is TRUE! I don't care if the poster made some grammatical blunders (his English is pretty decent) simply because he is the hiring manager not the job seeker. We need to stop the quaint Nigerian habit of stoning the messenger rather than listening to the message.

The honest truth is that a lot of our graduates are simply unemployable. I say this with sadness and not from a 'holier than thou' perspective.

this is just an excuse and its futile, if at all graduates do what you claim it will be the minority or about 6percent of those who apply don't make it look like its the majority.and make Nigerian graduates look like nonentities..

I'm a serving Corps member in Imo state and it was during this service year that I realised many Nigerian graduates are unemployable.

To most who belong to that category, going to school was just about getting the certificate. Or how do you explain a First Degree holder who doesn't know the difference between BSc and MSc saying that the school he graduated from awards MSc to fresh graduates .

Or how do you explain that a graduate does not know what is meant by "Discipline" as regards what a person studied in school?

To others who belong to that category, lack of information played a major role. Or how do you explain a first class graduate who forgets to put the class of degree he has on his CV?

The good thing about ask these basic skills is that no one brought it from Heaven. It was all learnt here on Earth. Meaning that if you devote your time to it, you can learn them.

Also, many recruitment consultants keep saying the same thing. If there is no iota of truth in it, would they say it? You can Google Detoun Ogwo and check some of her Facebook status of recent. You'll be shocked about her experiences

Pot calling the Kettle black
You are not any better, probably just lucky. Your writeup in itself is filled with spelling mistakes and improper use of punctuation marks and lack of it in some cases.

Remove the log In your eye before you look at that of others

And not all companies ask for a cover letter. If it is not asked for or required , you can always ignore it or do over sabi and send it all the same

Peace

See recruiters making mouth..
Unserious graduate... Yes

Half-baked graduate.... Yes

But when u send up to 100 applications in a month... U tend to lose hope and become nonchalant

It's an excuse.. But not a good one..

Job seekers.. Please take this thread seriously.. And hopefully lets see how things change for the better
