i've since learnt this does not work on Android 4.4 and 5

if you are on a lower version of android, then it may work

Runs on version 4.4 kitkat. have not confirmed it for 5.1 yet. But all 4.4 phones have tried they working good.

if you run "netcfg" as root in terminal when hotspot is on, is wlan0 up or down?

can you check please
