Ogun lawmaker calls for rehabilitation of Sagamu- Ogijo- Mosimi- Ikorodu Road

WORRIED by the spate of road crashes, armed robbery attacks and terrible traffic along the Sagamu- Ogijo- Mosimi- Ikorodu Road, a second major link road between Lagos and other parts of the country, the lawmaker representing Ikenne, Sagamu and Remo North, Remo Federal Constituency, Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu has called for the urgent rehabilitation of the road.
While describing the road as a strategic petroleum distribution network route in the country, the Ogun lawmaker, during the Plenary Session at the House on Tuesday, said “the road hosts several strategic installations and industrial plants such as the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company Limited (PPMC).”

According to him: “The deplorable condition of the Sagamu- Mosimi section of the road continuously poses great danger to lives and property in the surrounding communities, causing high rate of fatal crashes, creating gridlock and quite unfortunately, providing ample opportunities for armed robbery attacks on commuters and residents.”

He added that the strategic nature of this petroleum distribution network route necessitated heavy vehicular traffic, mainly petrol tankers and other haulage vehicles servicing the industries in the axis, hence the need for urgent intervention by the Federal Government.

He stressed that due to the bad state of the road and inflammable nature of the products being regularly conveyed, it had become imperative for the Federal Government to give prompt attention to it.

Adebutu, who revealed that he had received several petitions from the local communities, which decried the state of the road, said that apart from raising the Motion on Infrastructure in the House, he would also be working assiduously with the House Committee on Works to ensure that the reconstruction of the road was on the priority list of the 2016 Budget proposals of the Federal Ministry of Works.

He reassured members of the public, particularly the residents of Ogijo and Sagamu, that the matter of the Sagamu – Ogijo- Mosimi – Ikorodu Road was on the front-burner for prompt legislative action.

In response to Gbawe, you hit the nail on its head regarding Tinubu's focus. Yorubaland has a best practice in Awolowo in terms of politics and social doctrines. It is futile to expect a fitting replacement for Awolowo. His successes and accomplishments were lived out of a high strung personal belief in origination...in other words, he was a transformer fueled by a passiin to improve society by questioning traditional ways of doing things and replacing that with practices that are many years ahead of the contemporary.

Tinubu is a pragmatist. He lives by lessons learnt and uses the pain and barriers to his advantage to renew and restrategise on the fly with new obstacles he encounters. He is not a visionary......although his outputs have done excellenty well against the test of time.

We can comfortably call Awo the political father of Yorubaland but undoubtedly Tinubu qualifies to be labelled the political vanguard of Yorubaland.

To Shymmex's point, redistribution of wealth is vital to sustenance and survival of society. DAWN was set up to achieve this goal, amongst other areas mapped for intra regional cooperation and distributed development. The pain is no one really knows where DAWN is in terms of projects and forecasts for the region.

Great contributions everyone! wink

ODVanguard:

I see your point. I guess that's why it's grossly unfair to compare Tinubu to Awo coz Awo had administrative jurisdiction over the entire Western Region while he was Premiere, while Tinubu never has never really had that much reach. Yes he has considerable influence over the politics of the SW but pragmatically there's only so much he can do outside Lagos under the current system. Even Awo himself lost relative influence over the region after the demise of regionalism despite his political eminence -- it was not uncommon for some of his lieutenants/proteges during his time (e.g. former Gov. of Oyo, the late Bola Ige) to overrule his suggestion at times.

Spot on !!!! And if you look at lagos itself, you will see so much Tinubu tried to do for lagosians, while fending off the destructive political sabre of OBJ, that show he is a highly underrated and wrongly/falsely maligned leader. I am a lagosian. My interest in politics also means I 'dig' deeper than others to get the true picture pertaining to my state. Tinubu was unlucky to have the menace of OBJ on his back for the 8 years he was governor because the man was simply one of the brightest leaders Nigeria has ever seen and delivering one pioneering idea after the other much like Awolowo.

In fact many Yorubas and non-Yorubas despised Tinubu immensely for his Awo-like brilliance and they were determined to undermine and frustrate him. OBJ, a rabid hater of Awolowo, did his best to ensure Tinubu never shined as Governor of Lagos even as the man was delivering so many fantastic ideas OBJ himself could have used to better Nigeria. Non-Yorubas, seeing Awolowo in Tinubu, quickly moved to portray Tinubu the "most corrupt" and "number 1 enemy of Nigeria" whereas their region parade the most worthlessly destructive and most corrupt politicians Nigeria has like GEJ who did zilch for Bayelsa as governor or President!!!! Reading Nairaland, I see the mischievous demonization of Tinubu has worked to an extent because the hatred many have for him is from reading second-hand and deceptive information mischief-makers and deceitful elements have put out there. Few know of the many achievements of Tinubu as governor that reveals a very brilliant and visionary mind that could have delivered a lot at the centre or even as premier of the SW region.

Not many know that Tinubu is certainly one of the pioneers of the current Lagos transport mix. Rail transport, BRT, construction of roads et al, Tinubu had a hand in birthing them.

His plans for securing independent power supply for Lagos were laudable at a time most politicians were concerned with miring us in darkness so they could profit through a range of practises and businesses that made money from lack of power. I could go on all day but it is for some to go and research Tinubu or even buy and read his book to see that the man is not what they say he is. How many, for example know that Tinubu conceived the idea of the Lekki free trade zone taking in the lekki international airport? I would urge Yorubas to avail themselves of the copious amount of information out there so that we do not allow those envious we have someone they consider Awolowo incarnate, bamboozle us into hating and destroying a man we need far more than he needs us.

Poor transport infrastructure is such a major problem. It is unbelievable that in Lagos, people can spend 3-4 hours in traffic on each leg of their journey to work, every single day!! shocked shocked Mind boggling! I initially wanted to write about the terrible condition of this particular road. The Ikorodu-Ogijo-Sagamu road is one of the worst road in the whole of west africa(i am not exaggerating). Regrettably, Ogijo is a host to so many steel industries/factories with little commensurate infrastructural development in the area itself. Not too far from Ogijo is another place known as Simawa. Simawa has a lot of housing estate springing up left, right and center but unfortunately there is a dearth of basic ammenities in this place too.

The Sango-Ijoko-Alagbole-Akute-Berger road in Ogun/Lagos state has also been abandoned after construction works started on it about three years ago. That road is also very very very terrible. I wont forget areas like Ibafo, Magboro, Asese ...................... JESUS !!! People living in those places are really suffering. Some communities there havent had electricity supply for the past TEN YEARS.

I would add fetish killings in there my brother.

I read in news yesterday of a man found on our land in posession of a human head. He was arrested and put in jail. In his court appearance the judge granted him bail.

A murderer should never ever ever EVER...be allowed back into society unless he is absolved of the crime during trial.

This is not the first one to be bailed.

The State Executives, Legislators and Judges need to address the issue of ritual killing as a very serious problem and throw the books at these criminals.

Gbawe:

Tinubu is no socialist but he is no self-serving uber capitalist either. He is somewhat in the middle i.e socio-capitalist. From the way he talks and reasons, Tinubu's belief is that government should directly oversee and empower the projects, policies and plans that will enable Nigerians to do the rest themselves to secure their own socio-economic development. In other words, Tinubu is of the 'teach a man to fish' school of thought.

Sir, I understand your point/passion and we're entitled to our opinions, that's the beauty of having different POVs/approaches/methods to achieving the same goals. He doesn't need to be a socialist to create people-oriented policies. The UK is far from a socialist country - however, there are more people-oriented policies than what you'll term extreme capitalism. And there's a need for that, to create a balance, so as to make the people happy and engineer radical collective development and growth. Once you follow that approach, it will be easier to carry the people along cos they'll easily align with what they benefit from the system. However, once create a system that caters to self, no matter how laudable some of the achievements might be - it's a disaster waiting to happen and the people will end up revolting one day. A balance is always needed.

Tinubu on other hand is all for Tinubu albeit some of the projects are laudable. However, when the proceeds keep going to one man and his cronies - without spreading the wealth - then it's problematic. It's more of a collective thing, with group/collective structures that are in place - everyone will be able to benefit from those projects - either directly or indirectly. Tinubu is not a selfless man - his own brand of development is about being a towering figure, with everything under his name. You can't run a society like that. It has never worked and it will never work.

The problem is that Tinubu has a lot of enemies and many of them naturally revel in deceiving Nigerians by deliberately and deceptively dealing in half-truths and even outright lies. they will tell you about Eko Atlantic and his many private ventures but they will not tell you of his efforts, in his home state of Lagos, to deliver independent power supply while he was Governor. The will downplay BRT , like the British bus lane, which is the first effort of its kind in Nigeria to transport ordinary Nigerians faster and in relative comfort. You will not see him get credit for his dogged dedication to the notion that road infrastructure increases economic activities. This is the backbone policy that saw Lagos construct more square-km of roads than some African countries managed in the same period. Are you aware of Tinubu's effort to secure rail transport for use by all Lagosians and not the elite alone? this was at a others were still buying bicycles for the citizens of their States.

I understand the jealous that comes with success. However, there are also folks with legitimate concerns - especially folks who care about the plights of Yorubas and Yorubaland. Just because critiques align - that doesn't necessarily mean everyone is a hater/turncoat.

My dad is from Lagos and I'm not oblivious to what's going on in the state. I probably read more about Lagos than I even do about Nigeria, and I know more than I talk about on here. I don't hate the man but what he's doing to that place is not right. I can cite a lot of examples but that's a story for another day.

Poor transport infrastructure is such a major problem. It is unbelievable that in Lagos, people can spend 3-4 hours in traffic on each leg of their journey to work, every single day!! shocked shocked Mind boggling! In some areas, if you do not leave home at 4a.m, you can't get to your office on the Island at 7:30a.m.
You see, thats one of the reasons why i dont applaud some of the policy/projects of ACN/APC in Lagos state. I have nothing against the Eko Atlantic Project but i feel the timing is wrong. Do we need such a gargantuan project now? Insted of building skyscrappers in the middle of the sea why dont we construct a 4th Mainland Bridge which would link Lagos Island to Ikorodu thereby reducing the traffic congestion in greater Lagos considerably. I am of the opinion that the funds pumped into the Eko Atlantic Project thus far should have been used for the construction of a 4th Mainland Bridge

I would have wanted you to show us what this road looks like but then again make we no spoil the thread with dirty picture cheesy cheesy.Do you reside in Ogun state?

What about the old Toll-gate along Lagos Abeokuta expressway, where you have the T-junction between Sango and Ijoko? shocked That section is always in a perpetual state of disrepair with red, muddy sand and huge uneven tracts of laterite that is supposed to pass for a road.

Or the Idiroko Road in Sango Otta that still has so many craters and potholes?? This same road plays host to factories like Nestle, Honda, Bells University owned by Obasanjo and some other industries. cry
