REMI FANI KAYODE, AKINTOLA, AWOLOWO, WESTERN REGION AND THE CRISIS THAT TRUNCATED THE FIRST REPUBLIC

These captains of the “tribalism industry” have good incentives to always omit the causes of the January 1966 coup preferring instead to dwell only on the coup itself. The reason  is simple;  It was  in their own  Western region  then known as the “wild wild west”  that  election rigging, thuggery, violence, arson, mass murders and other  forms of corruption and acts of lawlessness that occasioned the January 1966 coup  took place as pioneering acts in Nigeria.

Soon after Nigeria got independence the Western region was in turmoil. Premier Ladoke Akintola and Chief Obafemi  Awolowo became embroiled in a protracted crisis. By 1962 the crisis led to sustained violence and acts of lawlessness with law makers engaged in vicious physical combats in the Western regional parliament. Amongst serious injuries and other damages, the mace of office was broken.  The federal government intervened to curb the lawlessness and violence by imposing a state of emergency and appointing Dr Moses Majekodunmi as interim premier of the Western region on the 29th of June 1962. This became the first imposition of a state of emergency in Nigeria’s history due to heightened levels of lawlessness. Following an alliance between Akintola and Ahmadu Bello, Ladoke Akintola was returned to power on the 31st of December 1962 in spite of protests by Dr Nnamidi Azikiwe who requested fresh elections rather than reinstating Ladoke Akintola.

By 1963, the plot between Akintola, Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello was perfected and Chief Obafemi Awolowo was arrested for coup plotting/ treason. His trial commenced in earnest and he was alongside some accomplices convicted for treason and jailed for 10 years. This again was the first alleged coup plotting and conviction in Nigerian history. Intent on totally decimating Chief Awolowo, Ladoke Akintola together with vice premier Remi Fani Kayode went into a political alliance with Prime minister Tafawa Balewa and new political party known as the Nigerian National Alliance (NNA) was formed.  By this time Dr Nnamidi Azikiwe had realised the folly of entering a coalition with Tafawa Balewa’s government   and teamed up with incarcerated Chief Awolowo’s Action group to form the all progressive grand alliance (UPGA).  

In 1964, federal elections became due. As usual ethnic chauvinism, intimidation and violence was part of the frenzied campaigning. Remi Kayode and Akintola’s campaign was as usual almost entirely based on tribalism. When the elections were finally held, it was massively rigged in the Western region. Indeed deputy premier Remi Fani Kayode had famously boasted that “there is nothing they can do, whether they vote us or not, we will win.” This statement turned out to be true as massive rigging was orchestrated in the elections.  Once again this became the first pioneering act of election rigging by indigenous actors in Nigeria’s history. The announcement of the rigged election results quickly sparked off unprecedented acts of thuggery, violence, arson, mass murders and general acts of lawlessness in the Western region.

Daily mass murders and arson became routine in the Western region (wetie). This violence and lawlessness in the Western region was to continue from 1964 until 1966 when the military lost patience and finally struck.

The Western region was thus a region in crisis from the onset of post-colonial rule. By the time of the military coup, Chief Obafemi Awolowo himself was incarcerated for treason and the region was practically on an uncontrollable violence and trajectory of self destruction for almost two years from 1964 to 1966. At the same time that the Western region was aflame the Eastern region was calm and democratic. Unlike the Western region there were no cases of election rigging, thuggery or other such acts of lawlessness in the East. In the North there was sporadic violence in the TIV division which was put down by the military.

Of all the regions, the western region was torn the most by crisis and acts of lawlessness which eventually occasioned the coup. If the leadership of the Western region had played by the rules and avoided the infighting, the election rigging, the thuggery, the  planning of a coup in 1963, the  arson, the mass murders and other  such corrupt acts and vices  many of which were being  introduced for the first time  in Nigeria  and which incidentally continues to haunt the nation to date, there would have been no coup and Nigeria would no doubt have immensely benefited from  a  functional democracy  devoid of election rigging, thuggery and violence as it obtains  in many progressive nations around the world.

The leadership of the Western region in conspiracy with Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello are singularly responsible for the events and crisis that truncated the first republic and ruined the nation.

Those who carried out the coup choose to act out of genuine anger and frustration at the carnage in the Western region.  Whatever the demerits of the coup, It is obvious the coupists had nothing to gain other than the patriotic urge to end the corruption and lawlessness that had taken hold of the nation particularly the Western region.

Yorubas created the crisis that occasioned the coup and whose region the coup saved from self destruction are  some of the biggest ungrateful noisemakers  who peddle  the propaganda  of  colouring  an anti corruption revolutionary coup with patriotic ideals  very similar to that of  Flt Lt  Jerry Rawlings  in a tribal garb. In Ghana, Jerry Rawlings led a coup that eliminated three former heads of state, top military officers and top members of the judiciary. Not one of those killed was from Jerry Rawlings Ewe tribe, but Ghanaians didn’t spew tribalism into the coup and Ghana is better for it. With too many vultures and opportunists...preying on tribalism in Nigeria the story was bound to be different and thus a coup driven out of patriotism and obvious anger at the state of affairs was reconstructed as an Igbo coup and the worms were let out from the woodwork.

In January 15, 1966 coup, soldiers from every region of the federation (Nzeogwu - Mid-West; Ifeajuna -East; Ademoyega - West; Kpera -North) had staged a coup in which soldiers and politicians from every region of the federation (Akintola: West, Balewa: North, Unegbe: East, Okotie-Eboh: Mid-West) were killed. Their ultimate aim was to install and make Chief Obafemi Awolowo the ruler of the country and quell the 'Operation Wetie' that was ravaging SW region where Lagos, the seat of power, was situated.

Unegbu was the GOC of one of the major army barracks. He was Igbo, and he was also the guy who almost frustrated the first coup of 1966 by refusing to release weapons. For his refusal, the Nzeogwu group killed him.

When Northern soldiers staged a revenge coup in July 1966, soldiers from one region of the federation and their people (North: Danjuma, Murtala, Martin Adamu etc) singled out soldiers and civillians from one region (East) in the federation as their targets. 


Gowon, Awolowo, Ejoor, Adebayo, Mobolaji Johnson, Katsina, Wey and all the groups that supported and advised the Federal Government of Nigeria to renege on the accords agreed upon in Aburi, Ghana were responsible for the 1967-70 Civil War, alongside their murderous kinsmen who killed innocent Easterners in revenge for an act done by a misguided group of soldiers comprising both Southerners and Northerners.

Ojukwu tried making peace, and called for peace-talk in a neutral ground hence the Aburi Accord, but Gowon and his co-travellers violated the agreement reached. If Ojukwu wanted war he wouldn't have called for peace talk in Ghana but the declaration of Biafra was inevitable as the killing of Easterners continued across the country. Ojukwu never asked for war! Ojukwu only declared Biafra when over thirty thousand corpses littered the Northern region in the aftermath of the January 15 1966 coup. Gowon and his cohorts declared the civil war! And Benjamin Adekunle, one the Nigerian soldier, later attested to the fact that Nigeria declared war because of oil in the Eastern region and not for the unity of the country!


Why didn't the July 1966 counter-coup plotters just wipe out the Eastern political class and call it a day. Aguiyi Ironsi did nothing deserving death yet they killed him. Ironsi was too much of a peacemaker and he died making useless peace, appeasing the Northerners. The counter coup plotters simply wanted a war and they sure got one.
Bear in mind there was no war before the pogrom of 1966 started in the North. 
So why resort to maiming and killing innocent Easterners cum civilians. Has the killings stopped till date? NO!

The February 13, 1976 Dimka-led coupists came from Benue and Plateau region. They assassinated Murtala Mohammed then Head of State, yet there was no genocide carried against the Middle-belt people. Why was same treatment not given to the ethnic groups of the Dimka-led coupists that committed same offence? It's simply hypocrisy!
It is even against the military rule to harm the innocent civilians during coup. 

According to the warped logic of hypocritical Yoruba and their co-travellers anytime there is a revolution or a coup the ethnic groups of the coup plotters should be singled out for ethnic cleansing!

Bloody, treacheerous, lousy noise-maker, you think you can cover up the atrocities of you saboteurs and your god, Obafemi Awolowo, who was the chief proponent of hatred, bitterness, tribalism, nepotism, propaganda and wickedness in this country? The same power hungry and greedy Awolowo who was imprisoned for treason and coup plotting until he was released by Odumegwu Ojukwu just before the 1967-70 war?

Nigeria risks disintegration, says Akinrinade

FORMER Chief of Defence Staff, Lt-Gen Alani Akin-rinade (rtd), yesterday regretted his role in the 1966 civil war.

He described the sacrifice as a waste of time.

Lt-Gen. Akinrinade said the post-civil war Nigeria was not a country of his dream.

The former Minister of Agriculture warned that the country risked imminent disintegration "unless true federalism is practised." 

The retired officer joined other stakeholders to condemn corrupt practices in the country.

It was at the "New Nigeria Dialogue" organised as part of the activities marking the 55th birthday of the founder of Latter-Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, at Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos. 

The ceremony was organised by the International Centre for Reconstruction and Development, a Non governmental Organisation (NGO).

Speakers, including Prof. Ropo Sekoni, Mr. Alfred Ilere, Chief Fred Agbe-yegbe and Mr. Tony Nnadi spoke on the theme: "The Nigerian Federation: Fundamental Flaws and Creative Reforms."

The event, which was chaired by the former governor of Lagos State, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (rtd), was witnessed by former Governor Bisi Akande of Osun State, Dr Amos Akingba, Hon. Wale Oshun, Mrs. Jumoke Anifowose, Mr. Tokunbo Ajasin, Mr. Bisi Adegbuyi, Pa Adedapo Adeniran, Mr. Sam Ayedogbon, Mr. George Eke, Shettima Yerima and Mr. Yinka Odumakin.

Lt-Gen Akinrinade and other speakers rejected the 1999 Constitution, saying it was foisted on the country by the military.

To avert the collapse of the fledging federation, he canvassed restructuring of the country along the terms of the component units and a constitution that will promote true federalism.

The former minister said: "We must do constitutionally in Nigeria what Rawlings did in Ghana." 

Reflecting on the journey from independence, Bakare agreed that the prediction about an imminent break-up of the country might be fulfilled "if urgent steps are not taken to address the grievances of the ethnic nationalities. "

He said Nigeria must learn from the disintegration of Soviet Union and Yugoslavia because they could not meet the expectation of the units.

Akande peeped into the future, saying perilous days were around the corner owing to the collapse of schools and health institutions.

Sekoni traced the tragedy of the nation’s federalism to the post-1966 period when the military foisted on the country a centralised system of administration.

Quoting the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he said: "A multi-ethnic country can only realise its potentials when it embraces true federalism."

How I wish that the Nigerian people had their own Odysseus’ , Achilles’, Agamemnons and Hectors. How I wish they had their own ancient poets and great thinkers like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Homer who could remind generations to come about our past exploits with their inspiring, compelling and historic prose.

Yet I look at the Nigeria of today and I am not encouraged or inspired. As a matter of fact I am deeply saddened. I see no heroes on the horizon but only questionable pretenders and fallen caricatures that have sold their heritage and destiny for a mess of porridge and that couldn’t give a fig about what history or posterity will say about them or their 

Many have asked why I should say such things. Permit me to answer that pertinent question by posing a few of my own.

I start by asking: is this the Nigeria of Murtala Mohammed and Theophilius Yakubu Danjuma? Is this the nation that helped to liberate Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa?

Is this the nation that restored sanity and stability to Sierra Leone, that brought an end to a civil war in Liberia, that fought so gallantly in Burma and Somalia and that quelled a military coup in Sao Tome and Principe?
Is this the nation whose wealth once knew no bounds and whose middle class once owned the finest cars and properties in London, Paris and New York? Is this the nation whose beautiful people once graced the streets of Belgravia, Chelsea, Hampstead and Knightsbridge?

Is this the country that once nationalized BP and that gave Margaret Thatcher sleepless nights over apartheid South Africa?

Is this the nation that once stood up to the mighty Boers and whose ancestors studied at Oxford and Cambridge as far back as the 1800’s?

Is this the nation whose inhabitants and various ethnic nationalities once ruled vast empires and whose progenitors contributed so much to the traditions, religion and culture of Ancient Egypt?
Is this the country that once fought a bitter and brutal civil war, yet declared ”no victor, no vanquished” and, in the spirit of love, came back as one? Is this the country which has been through thick and thin and yet whose people remained ever so resilient and always put a smile on their faces?

Is this the country where giants once held court and where the greats of old once presided? Where did we go wrong? What has happened to our people and what has afflicted our country? When did our leaders become spineless cowards and deceivers? When did the green white green of our nation’s flag become soiled with human faeces and when was it torn to shreds?

When did we shy away from fighting our own battles and prosecuting our own wars? When did we start bowing our heads in shame as events unfold in our country? When did we start sitting down silently as international newscasters speak about our nation in painful, disdainful, hushed and condescending tones?
What has happened to the ever courageous, ever smiling, ever confident and ever dependable Nigerian who shook the world with his arrogance and confidence and who spoke of his nation with pride and joy?
What has happened to our great army that was once the pride of Africa and that once made us so proud? What has happened to our great intellectuals and our men and women of courage and vision who once, like a collosus, bestrode the world?

What has happened to the stubborn and proud yet warm, friendly and profoundly good people that Nigerians once were? What has happened to the people that were once regarded as the hope of Africa and the pride of every black man on the planet?

Where and when did we go astray? How and when did it all go wrong?

When did we lose our strength, our wealth, our honour and our power? When did we lose our excellence, our confidence, our dignity and our self-respect? When did we become so weak and so helpless? When did we turn into killers, savages and barbarians
When did we become so pitiful that the whole world mocks us and heaps insults on us so easily? When did they start saying that we have ”no serious government”, that we have ”lost control of large portions of our nation” and that we can’t even protect our own children? When did we become incapable of defending our borders and protecting our people?

When did we turn into a laughing stock and a reference point for incompetence, stupidity, cowardice, ignorance, evil, cluelessness and all that is bad to the rest of the world?

When did other nations start giving us lessons on how to fight insurgency and how to prosecute our wars? When did our people start clamouring for foreign armies to enter our land, violate our sovereignty and march on our sacred soil?
When did we start having to ask others to come and solve our local problems? O Nigeria, how are the mighty fallen. Truly ours is a nation afflicted. She is finished and there is little hope of any form of redemption or resurrection.

The honeymoon is over and the glory has departed. One hundred years of a forced and failed marriage has ended in a bitter yet undeniable divorce. We have lost it all and there is no going back. Those that wish to break up our nation for sport and bring our people to their knees have had their way.

Those that wish to watch us slaughter one another in an orgy of mindless violence and that wish to establish their AFRICOM in our shores will soon be here and we shall be occupied forever
O Nigeria, how are the mighty fallen. I loved Nigeria but now I have stopped believing in her. She is saddled with many different sub- nations that were simply incompatible right from the start.

She is plagued and cursed with one particular sub-nation whose ruling elite are dangerous and unyielding, whose guile and deceit is second to none, who treat their own people with contempt and derision, who believe that they were born to rule, who think that power belongs to them, who suppress the religious and ethnic minorities within their ranks and who were taught from an early age that there was none besides them. Those people have killed Nigeria. They and those who have consistently bowed and trembled before them and who have always allowed them to have their way. Our nation has become a cruel joke- she is a maliciously contrived contraption that has shattered many dreams and frustrated many ambitions and aspirations. This was a country that was created for the benefit of just a few at the cost of the misery and pain of so many.


I will never accept the idea of living in a nation side by side with religious extremists who slit the throats of children, who habitually slaughter the innocents and who abduct and fornicate with small girls. Animals have no place in the homes of men.

It is time for us to stop pretending: let the terrorists and their friends in high places break away and establish their own country where they can marry as many young girls as they please and chop off as many limbs as they want. Let them form a nation where they can stone adulterers and turn women into chattels that are not even worthy of life.


Let those of us from the west establish Oduduwa and let us celebrate and enjoy our freedom from the bondage and ineptitude of a cruel failed state that has no soul and that lacks humanity and compassion.

Let us be liberated from the deceit that is known as Nigeria: a nation that once was but that is no more. Let us be free of Nigeria: a nation where injustice, evil, persecution, insensitivity, impugnity, terror, graft and wickedness reign supreme.
Let us be rid of Nigeria: a country where those of us that had the misfortune of being born on the ”wrong” side of the regional divide or who are adherents of the ”wrong” religious faith are butchered for our heritage and can never be treated as equals. Give us Oduduwa or let us die.
Yet we will eventually take our freedom by force if it is not freely given to us. We shall take it by fire: by the shedding of blood and by our own bleeding if necessary. We will take it by fire and by sacrificing our lives if that is what we are forced to do.

What we will never do is continue to live in perpetual slavery in a nation called Nigeria that is afflicted with feeble rulers and peopled by religious bigots, sexual deviants and bloodthirsty terrorists.

We shall not allow ourselves to be consummed by the weakness and ineptitude of our present-day rulers and the sheer incompetence of those that do not have the courage or the moral authority to crush the beasts that have abducted and enslaved our girls.

I have had enough. I say goodbye Nigeria: give them Biafra; give us Oduduwa or let us die.

Awolowo visited ojukwu few weeks before the war to appeal to ojukwu to allow dialogue instead of war, but ojukwu refused, no thanks to his pride, arrogance and lack of foresight.

So, you were expecting we Yoruba's to join with you and fight against the northerners? That will be very foolish. It is also unreasonable. Ojukwu's reason for going into that war was one of the stupidest reasons on earth. Ojukwu was selfish and self-centered. Why did I say that?

1. When aguiyi ironsi removed, by the way of coup, a civilian president, ojukwu did not say a thing, because things were working for the igbos LIE!

2. When your Igbo brothers in the army were killing Hausa and Yoruba soldiers and leaving Igbo soldiers unhurt, ojukwu kept quiet, because igbos were not hurt.

3. When the northerners were asking ironsi to punish perpetrators of the January 15 coup and ironsi was acting reluctant, ojukwu never said a word, because things were moving fine for the igbos.

4. But the moment ironsi was killed in retaliation by the northerners and a northerner in the perosn of General Gowon took over, that was when ojukwu suddenly woke up from his slumber. That was when he realised that igbos were being marginalised and killed. He only noticed that when the table turned against the igbos.

The Agitation Will not Stop Until Nigeria Recognizes Biafra – General Joe AchuziaAchuzia-JoeGen. J.O.G. Achuzia (rtd) is a for­mer officer of the Biafran Army. Now an elder statesman, he told PAUL OSUYI, in this interview in Asaba that it is time the Federal Gov­ernment recognised that there was once a nation called Biafra. Excerpts:

Looking back, what do you think has changed between the time you along with others fought the civil war and now?

I am formerly of the Biafran Army and like all those that participated in the struggle, af­ter the pogrom that took place in Nigeria in the late sixties, we thank God that that gru­eling war was over, and today we are trying to fashion a new Nigeria which unfortunately does not seem to click. And I believe that the problem is not a problem of knowledge of how to package the country but greed which is the common human disease that has infest­ed the totality of Nigerian government, that is the problem we are facing at the moment.

You were on the side of Biafra during the civil war, what was the agitation like at the time?

In my days, there were no agitations, events were just happening. First, the issue was not that of the civilian public, it was merely a military problem. The politicians were busy politicking, out of the civilian politicking, the problem of the Western House started which led to a lot of blood letting by civilians in the West, that was around 1963/64. We consid­ered the matter a Western regional political issue as at then. Before that could end, the military who had been to abroad for opera­tion in the Congo came back and before you could say Jack Robinson, a coup took place. The mis-interpretation of the coup because of the Nigerian attitude which continues to persist till today, that Nigerian attitude is eth­nicity. It is because of the ethnicity that has always been at the background that made our Northern brothers to ascribe the coup as an Igbo coup. Mis-management on the part of the military because of inexperience led to another counter-coup that cost the life of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces who in his zeal brought about the end of the coup, and those young officers that carried out the coup were quickly gathered up and incarcerated. All these were the background of events in my days when I was just in my early thirties, in fact, I was just stepping into my thirties.

Can you compare what is hap­pening today, with respect to the agitation, to what happened in your days?

I will say there is a vast difference. Take for instance what happened a few days ago throughout the whole of the South-Eastern region. When I say South-Eastern region, it affected all the states in the South-East, all the states in the South-South. So, it is not a question of Biafra being a South-East problem or a South-South problem. It is the South-Eastern region of Nigeria because Ni­geria was originally on a tripod of South-East region, South-West region and the Northern region. So, you can see that what took place, took us back to what Nigeria was during the first republic. It also has a different col­oration because in the lower part of Benue and Adamawa, the areas in the north bor­dering the South participated, but this has a different coloration. Why I say that it has different coloration is that those who carried out the demonstration which was of course their right because the Constitution says so that every Nigerian has the right to freedom, of association and freedom to demonstrate so long as the demonstration is orderly are Nigerians. The people who demonstrated were from the ages of 40 downwards. The war ended over 40 years ago, that gives you, without much thinking the type of people we are talking about. These were children, half of them were born in Biafra at the time, and their birth certificates say they were Biafran citizens. When the war ended, Nigeria did not address this issue, reasons being that our counterparts who took it upon themselves to manage the affairs of reconstruction, reha­bilitation and so on, made a terrible mistake. That mistake was that they did not look into the situation that existed because most of those born during the three and half years the war was going on were babies with Biafran birth certificates and exited the country as Bi­afrans. Now they are adults, and as far as they are concerned, where is Biafra? The Eastern region of the territory called Nigeria. They visited, saw the hostility and things not going right. Based on their perceived knowledge and intelligence, they felt the best thing is to reclaim our territory, maybe we will make it a model for the rest of Nigeria to follow, hence the agitation.[/b]

From your analysis, is the agita­tion or protest justified?

The justification of a situation depends on perception, one’s perception. Why I say one’s perception, I have just given you, told you who are the Biafrans and who are the people demonstrating. You will not see me or people that fought in the war of Biafra parading the streets in an attempt to bring back the hand of the clock, no. I repeat these are children whose identity, background and what makes a human being is your name, where you were born, the citizenship that you belong, that you were born in, that is what makes a human identity. So, are we trying to say that they are no more human beings or that they, all of a sudden, if they come back to Nigeria as they have come down now, for them to get that identity changed makes them virtually alien.

You said the Western House crisis of the sixties was a regional issue, there is the Boko Haram ravaging the North-East at the moment, and now how do you classify the pro-Bi­afra agitators?

It is a regional issue.

What should government do about it?

Without having to be repetitive in my recounting of events, I have said time and time again that there should be a round ta­ble conference where all cards from all the regions should be placed on the table with no question of no-go area. You see, the is­sue of ‘no go area’ is because of the dishon­esty within the armed forces who crafted a Constitution within the military system. And when they came into government and per­ceived the lucre that exists within the civil governance, now translated from military to civil, it is almost like Myanmar, the coun­try near India where we call Burma during the First World War and the Second World War. Myanma got independence through the military but the military made sure that any election, they say we give you right of elec­tion but after each election, they have a right to nominate 25 persons into the government whereby they choose which side they will support and give that 25 per cent to make it a majority party. That is what Nigeria has been suffering, Nigeria since 1966, after the coup had been subjected to the pressure of mili­tary Constitution. The military said they have suspended the Constitution, mark the word ‘suspension’ not abrogated. When you sus­pend something, it means that in the future, you will resuscitate it but the military exited without resuscitating the Constitution. My country men, the civil populace rushed into governance using the same military Consti­tution. The answer is very simple, the Con­stitution we are using till date is a military prepared Constitution. The civilians were so naive that instead on being told that the military has exited and they are now ready for civilian rule, the first thing they should do is suspend or abrogate the military Constitu­tion, resuscitate the civil Constitution which was suspended. Constitution goes in suc­cession, so the first thing is to abrogate the present military Constitution, no matter what favours who and what did not favour who. Resuscitate the original Constitution that we had, examine it, know how to amend it so that we know where we went wrong in the first place and stop tinkering with military Constitution which will take us nowhere.

The renewed agitation by the pro-Biafra groups came up after Buhari was sworn in as president, could it be a fall out of the March 28 Presidential Election which Good­luck Jonathan lost?

No! It is easy to attribute it to that but it is not. The agitation was going on while Jona­than was on seat, the agitation was going on while Yar’Adua was on seat. In fact, at one time, it was said that it was the MASSOB who were supporting the Ijaw militants. Like I said, the agitation is that there are certain people in the South-East and South-South who were born during the three and half year war, who did not know Nigeria, it is Biafra that they know. And it is difficult to wipe it off their psyche, these are the leaders of the demonstrations.



What is the place of Nnamdi Kanu in the Biafra configuration?

Nnamdi Kanu is one of these young men that I talked about, I doubt if he saw his fa­ther carry gun during the civil war but he has heard of it just as you have heard of it. Having heard that your father carried gun in defense of his territory called Biafra that belongs to them, are you going to exclude yourself? No!

The protest appears to be peaceful at the moment but where will it lead to, will it end up in arms struggle?

Nobody prays for arms struggle, it is only somebody who has never seen a war that clamours for war. And usually, it is only cowards that die many times before their death. Having participated in a grueling civil war, I would not wish it for anybody neither do I wish it for my children. Like I tell my children, the answer is not agitation but I will not ask you not to participate, to demonstrate, to show or to orchestrate your inner frustration. Frustration bottled up when it explodes, it is catastrophic. For that, even in civilized world, all over the world today, you find demonstrations going on, it is peo­ple who could not be pro-active to manage the demonstration that you find where prob­lem arises – killings, fighting, destruction takes place. But I am glad and I will say kudos to the Nigerian Police this time. You see, I like people who keep their words and I believe the present crop of police officers, commissioners who are at the helm of af­fairs are more educated, better oriented and understands what it is all about. But most importantly there are children that were born immediately before the civil strife, and some born within the civil strife, who are Nigeri­ans or Biafrans within the civil strife, and those born immediately after the civil war. So, they understand one another. I have the pleasure and opportunity of having interac­tions with some of these commissioners, my request is simple, it is the inalienable right of every citizen to demonstrate when they want as long as that demonstration does not lead to civil strife, the demonstration does not lead to destruction of public property. Once it is a peaceful demonstration, sheathe your sword, let your men be on the outside and watch events, if anything is destroyed, those demonstrating will pick the culprits and hand over to you. We are a civilized country, don’t let us behave as if we are in Dafur. This time, they obeyed the instructions, and do you know what I was hearing, people were call­ing me saying that they do not understand, so much crowd out for demonstration with the police walking side by side and nothing hap­pening. You see, people thought that there would be explosion and killings, no! All they were asking the Federal Government was for the government to release our compatriot that you detained, have dialogue with our el­ders, our fathers are still alive, have dialogue with them and let us re-package Nigeria to accommodate everybody. If we do not get Biafra as an independent country, we can an­swer Biafra by name instead of being called South-Easterners.

How do you answer Biafra by name?

Is Arewa not northern-based? But they answer Arewa. All we ask is that the an­cient name by which our forefathers were known when the Portuguese arrived within the 13/14th century that the people they met were Biafrans, hence the bight of Biafra. That name should not be lost because it is our heritage, we are not asking to exit Nigeria, of course not, we have a lot at stake in Nigeria. It is up to the government whether they change the name Nigeria to what it should be or what it should not be. But being called North-East, North-West, South-East is un-African.

What should the present Feder­al Government do to leave its foot­prints in the hearts of the people of Biafra?

What the Federal Government should do for us, we are not asking him to make all Ig­bos ministers, giving us ministerial appoint­ment means nothing, that is individual ac­knowledgement, it does not reach the hearts of the people. First, we repeat, restructuring of Nigeria, Nigeria should be restructured and when we say restructuring, we mean ex­actly restructuring. At the moment, we have a lot of problems going on, initially, since the Boko Haram issue, things have been going wrong. The past government did not want to address it, it seems as if there are people who want strife to be going on this country. Suggestions have been made and I believe as I am speaking now, that there are people be­ing killed in Berom and all those places in the Middle Belt by Fulani herdsmen. One soul lost either in the North, west or east is one soul lost in Nigeria. Any government or any leader that is insensitive to that is not a prop­er leader. What we need is a leader who is sensitive to our problem, our problem is not really what they say, corruption was inherited from the people who packaged Nigeria. They made it so, hence the introduction of ‘dash’ into our lexicon. When you do something for somebody, he gives you something and you say he dashed me, you partake in the pro­ceeds of corruption under the guise of dash. If you imprison all the people that they say they cornered all the millions and billions, how do you get the money back? The countries where these monies were deposited can only promise that they will help you to collect the money. Having filled those forms, on interview, you are asked to bring your certificate of birth, and you produce it that you were born in Biafra, au­tomatically you are rejected. Hence I said that the government must accept that Biafra existed, qualify it, give it a place within the ethos of Ni­geria just like the Western region is asking for Oduduwa. Once this is done, we are all Nigeri­ans but my territory where I come from, where I was born is Biafra. For a westerner, where he was born is known as Oduduwa. In the North- West, I am a Nupe man and so on. Why are we ashamed of answering the ancient names of our forefathers? Nigeria is a British concocted name, it does not reflect what and who we are, and as long as it does not reflect what and who we are, all hands can never be on deck to move it forward.

As the protest continued to be sus­tained, what is your advice for the young men and women involved?

My advice has always been same thing, I can’t tell them to stop protesting but most importantly, my advice will go to the govern­ment. For those you hold in detention, free them, let them go, let them emulate the way their compatriots who demonstrated on their behalf did this last weekend because if they are freed there will be no need for demon­stration. That did not say that they will not demonstrate until they have their rights to call themselves Biafrans within Nigeria. We don’t like the word South-Easterners, we don’t like the word Eastern region, and we don’t like the word South-South zone. A peo­ple must have a proper identity. Why don’t they call Adamawa North-Eastern zone, it answers Adamawa, others answer Taraba and so on. Let us answer Biafra and we will hail the leadership to high heavens for just doing that, it is better than giving us millions, billions and trillions.[/b]

Corruption is but a symptom of something far more foundational and treacherous: the irredeemable systemic miasma of an overcentralized multi-ethnic nigeria.
