Do not tell the legendary coach to shut up. Westerhof revolutionized Nigerian football and put the structure we are enjoying today.

His team was too brilliant and we were rated as the fifth best team in the World. We played any team without fear. The Italian team that knocked us out of the '94 World Cup was the second best team in the World and with the best player in the World, Roberto Baggio.

Westerhof changed the lives of a lot of youngsters and made them super stars. Where did Van Gaal see Finidi George to sign him? Watching Finidi play for Westerhof. Westerhof used to have primary school footballers come and watch the Super Eagles train.

He was a visionary man and treated us like his own. If anyone has the right to caution Coach Oliseh when he is Faltering, it is the Legend, Coach Clemens Westerhof.

He did too much for us for any Nigerian to tell him to shut up.

Come on. Westerhof virtually groomed Oliseh with his own hands. He brought Oliseh into the Super Eagles as an amateur player. He had the senior players coaching Oliseh to make him catch up woth the team.

Westerhof pointing out deficiencies in Oliseh's triumph over Swaziland is not hatred but a fact.

If Coach Keshi drew with Swaziland, Coach Oliseh would have slaughtered him on papers. So Oliseh should be able to take some bashing.

It is time we stop celebrating mediocrity and listen to our legendary coach. Westerhof believes we should be shipping 6 to 7 goals against Swaziland. We should accept it and demand more from Coach Oliseh.

He didn't criticise he basically said we won't qualify with Oliseh. If it were any other ex coach saying that we would have all unanimously called it hate but now all of a sudden it is constructive. Big countries in Europe struggle all the time with so called smaller countries, Holland will not be at the Euro's (maybe westerhof can go give them advice). I don't read into too much of what people say but when it is in turn bashing Nigeria i take an exception, why won't we be at the world cup? Oliseh is our man hired and paid and so we should surport him as long as he holds the job. btw Oliseh was not an amateur player when he made his debut.

Of course Set-pieces mastery alone do not make Oliseh a tactical guru.

And I never said set-pieces utilization shows the height of brilliant coaching.

I wasn't referring to only set-pieces as regards Oliseh's tactical intelligence (which is quite good but can be far better, of course). In saying Oliseh is tactically good, I refer to his all-round football philosophy and tactics as displayed in the game against Cameroun (OLISEH'S ONLY GREAT GAME TILL NOW). Oliseh has great potentials in terms of tactics but I'm afraid his "over zealousness" and "stubbornness" may interfere with his job. HE SHOULD REALLY WATCH IT!!!!

In the post you quoted, I was only affirming Sir Joseph's observation on how clinical we seem to be with set-pieces these days. Oliseh deserves credits on this one.

Even though it's NOT EUREKA YET........ *smiles*

TheGoodJoe:

Contrary, I do not see scoring from set pieces as the height of brilliant coaching. I use Guardiola as a standard model for understanding brilliant coaching. Not Mourinho who I think Coach Oliseh adores.

Most of Guardiola's goals come from creative team play. Goals from open play.

Celebrating set pieces as the height of tactics is not a sign of brilliance.

Honestly when I saw some "attacking" Westerhof just because of his words, I grew a bit weak.

I wanted to respond but I said, "forget it Dave, let it go...... It's what they think".

Have people suddenly forgotten the Legend of Westerhof in Nigerian Soccer??

Well, I guess your response here hits the bull's eye.

It will do just fine. *smiles*

Ighalo: My Eagles Goals Will Come, Watford’ll Give United A Good Fight

Nigeria and Watford striker Odion Ighalo in this interview with Completesportsnigeria.com's JOHNNY EDWARD reveals reasons why Super Eagles struggled to beat Swaziland and promises to give Manchester United a tough time on Saturday…

Two games no goals for you but the Super Eagles qualified for the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. How does this feat make you feel?

Firstly, I give thanks to God that we qualified against a tough team like Swaziland. It was not an easy round because we played against a side that deployed more bodies in defence.

They gave us a good fight. The first leg was on an artificial turf which affected the way we played and also the flood lights were not bright enough for us to play with.

There were other unpleasant conditions but I’m happy we have qualified and I’m looking forward to the draws.

As regards the goals, I wasn’t too happy because I didn’t get to score but the fact that the team won is great. I worked hard for the team but the goals didn’t come but I was glad that the coach was pleased with my performances in the two games.

I helped my team keep the ball and gave everything to score. I know many expect me to score just like I do for my team in England but most times it doesn’t work that way.

I know the goals will still come because I am working hard to maintain that form of scoring in every game. To my fans, I’m sorry I didn’t score.

Now that Nigeria have qualified and might not be seeded in the group stage draw, are you scared of they may be drawn against the likes of Cote d’Ivoire Cameroun, Ghana and South Africa in the group phase of the 2018 World Cup?

We are not scared of any team and won’t underrate any team as well. In Africa there are no minnows anymore; we saw what Swaziland did to us away and how Ghana were held at Comoros so the tide is changing and we will be better going ahead.

We just have to work harder and keep to the tactics of our coach.
With Sunday Oliseh’s tactical acumen we can face any team. I don’t prefer any team I just pray for a favourable draw because the aim is to qualify for the World Cup.

This weekend, your team Watford, 11th in the English Premier League table, host Manchester United at Vicarage Road. United may likely be without some of the top players like Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling and the rest. What are your chances?

Manchester United are a big team in England and one of the biggest sides in world club football. Against them it won’t be easy and that’s why Watford have been pushing hard to stay in the league.

Going into the game we are the underdogs and they will be difficult to beat but we will give it our very best to win and stay up on the log as long as we can.
Nobody can predict the outcome but they will get a good fight on Saturday.

Lastly, what do you make of coach Sunday Oliseh?

He is a strict coach and one that knows what he wants from his team. Since my first encounter with him he has never changed.

He doesn’t want to know where you play for so long as you give him what he wants on the pitch and he’s not scared to throw you out when you’re not performing.

I think that those were few of the reasons he was appointed. In a nutshell, he’s a strict professional and a disciplinarian.

I do not doubt Coach Oliseh becoming a great coach. He played in a role that required a lot of technical and tactical understanding of the game. He was a defensive midfielder in a team that possessed the ball and attacked at Breath taking pace.

Coach Oliseh's plays made the team tick. I see him passing the philosophy of the game to the team. He also worked with great coaches from his time at Ajax, to Juventus to Dortmund.

He is growing on the job and I see him blending and becoming a good coach.

I also applaud the tactical brilliance of our coaches, from Coach Manu Garba, to Coach Emmanuel Amunike, to Coach Samson Siasia and many others.

Some people will not notice how tactically brilliant Coach Keshi was. In the game we did not qualify for the last AFCON, Coach Keshi went three at the back with One central defender Egwueke and two wing backs. In the second half, we played a pressing attacking football and we almost won the game if not that our attackers missed a lot of goals. Especially Musa and Uche.

In the CHAN, Coach Keshi led the team to a miracle moment were the team went from 3 goals down to win the match 4-3 against Morocco.

Our Coaches are good and I believe with time, Coach Oliseh will adjust. I think his major problem is experience and it shows in his overzealousness and man management deficiency.

I just do not want us to praise Coach Oliseh when he is not performing. Constructive criticism will make him perform better. He is a brilliant man.

Westerhof did not have a golden generation. He built the Golden Generation. He owes us nothing. We even owe him more. The sabotage the NFF continue today was on at the time of Coach Westerhof. He used to go behind the NFA to get support for his team.

After his great work with the Super Eagles and building a memorable team, the NFA sacked him unfairly. We can only wonder what might have been if he continued.

Westerhof used to go to Ajegunle and the creeks the look for footballers. He went to ghettos to watch games. He had scouts all over the country watching secondary school games.

He always put the first team on pressure and gave the young ones chances. After we won the Tunisia '94 AFCON, Westerhoff invited 300 players to camp and screened his World Cup team. He wanted the very best for the World Cup.

He is not calling Oliseh a failure. He is telling his Captain without the band to sit up and give Nigeria more. Coach Oliseh's coaching is not acceptable because Coach Oliseh can offer more.

What he is coaching now is not enough to qualify us.

Did you watch the friendly against Cameroon? You will see the potential for us to score team goals in that match. We score two fantastic goals with vital team movements. Is it a fluke? I don't know, however Oliseh attributed that performance to the length of time they were together in training.

Set pieces are vital. There are many important games where matches are won just via set pieces. That's the way football is. Make every opportunity to make the est use of the opportunity that presents itself to you.

If we play 20 games and we scored zero goals from free kicks with one coach, and then with a new coach, we play 3 matches and we have 3 goals from free kicks, it is simply rational to know that the new coach is deliberately setting his team up to be dangerous in set pieces. That is not luck That takes careful planning.

You do not think that the manner of execution shows tactical brilliance? The manner the free-kicks from the games with Cameroun and Swaziland were scored showed some striking resemblance. It's even more striking because they were played by two different players (Mikel, Igboun), yet you'd think it was the same person if you dont take a closer look. I dont think it's luck. I say that was perfected in their training sessions.

I repeat, you can not judge a coach as being tactically brilliant from set pieces but from the goals scored in open play.

Free kicks can win games for a sound coach. But, a tactically brilliant coach delivers from open play.

For instance, Coach Westerhof believes we should beat teams like Swaziland with 6 to 7 goals. You can not achieve that with free kicks but with sound tactical approach.

Hmmm..... Abeg o. I salute Keshi's Tactical abilities too. He had his moments. And surely they were "special". *smiles* (Whether Nigerians like it or not, Keshi is Nigeria's most successful indigenous coach at the moment...... #FACT)

And yeah, I totally concur. Constructive Criticism will make Oliseh better. That's what we're both doing. *smiles*

It's something we must do but some people don't seem to see it that way. Someone even termed me a sadist for being "constructively critical". It's a risk we must take inspite of the insults or names-calling that come our way.

That's why I insist that Oliseh's only great game so far is Nigeria's 3-0 win over rivals, Cameroun.

Oliseh got potentials, YES. Can be better, YES. He's shown he's tactically good, YES. BUT I WILL NOT HESISTATE TO CALL HIM OUT WHEN I SEE THAT HIS "FLAWS" ARE AFFECTING THE PROGRESS OF OUR TEAM.

He should really watch it.

Westerhof: Oliseh Can’t Take Eagles To 2018 World Cup

Former Super Eagles coach, Clemens Westerhof, has raised the alarm that Nigeria stand the risk of not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup to be staged in Russia with Sunday Oliseh in charge.

Westerhof, who guided the Super Eagles to Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia in 1994 as well as a second round appearance in the 1994 FIFA World Cup debut in the United States of America, said the Super Eagles' start to the qualifiers does not give confidence the team will win the race to Russia.

“Congratulations, you beat Swaziland 2-0 in the return leg match of the preliminary round of the qualifiers,” Westerhof told Complete Sports.

“But does that really call for celebration? Yes, there are no minnows in football but who are Swaziland to hold the Super Eagles to a goalless draw (in Swaziland)?

“The Super Eagles won 2-0 in (Port Harcourt) Nigeria but is it not a game the Super Eagles should be winning 6-0, 7-0 under normal circumstances?. What type of football do they play in Swaziland?”

Reminded that the Super Eagles are undergoing rebuilding following the arrival of a new manager, Sunday Oliseh, to take charge of technical affairs of the team, Westerhof said there’s no sign the team will get better.

“Swaziland is not the first match Super Eagles have played under Oliseh. There has not been any difference between their first game under him and the game with Swaziland.

“I’m sorry, with Oliseh, the Super Eagles may not go to the World Cup in Russia,” Westerhof declared.

I don't care who coaches our team I will surport them everyday and i don't need nobody legend or not telling me they might fail. That's just the way i feel on this issue but i also respect ur opin and will leave it at that.

He did too much for us for any Nigerian to tell him to shut up.
every single person has a right to caution oliseh how does winning a qualifier match now relate to with oliseh we may not qualify for the world cup.oliseh has good statistics already he has won more matches than he has lost or drawn all these are good signs that we will qualify so wtf is westerhoff saying.
westerhoff won d afcon keshi did that too he got to round of 16 keshi did that too when trying to criticise simply don't do it the scholes way.

If you think a draw and a 2-0 win is impressive, then pay attention to Coach Westerhof. He said he is not impressed that we should be beating countries like this with 6 or 7 goals. That is what the coach expects from Coach Oliseh.

We the fans should also expect Coach Oliseh to do that because he has the ability and the talents at his disposal.

Come on Sir Basco. Relax ok. I'm certain Westerhof means well.

He only said and I quote, "I'm sorry,........... The Super Eagles MAY not go to the world cup........"

He wasn't exactly "certain" about it. He's just expressing an opinion based on his observations and more.

We both (as with several others here) love the Super Eagles. So I say the ball is in Oliseh's court TO PROVE WESTERHOF WRONG.

I believe he can. But it doesn't matter what I believe. What matters is what Oliseh believes.

Please, just free Westerhof. Besides, you and I know his legend and contributions to Nigerian soccer. Yes, we had "The Players/Talents" that made up the "first" Golden Generation (yep... I use first because a second will rise and fully mature soon-within 2yrs as latest) but it was one man's Nurturing and coaching that transformed these bunch of "Isolated Super Talents" into a "Fearsome Super
Team".

This team included Oliseh(current SE coach), Amunike (current U-17 GE coach), **you know the rest**

Come on, you know better than this. He deserves the highest respects no matter what.

*smiles*

westerhoff might mean well but those are not d words of a man dat means well.when he was told that the team was rebuilding he said THERE IS NO SIGN THAT IT WILL GET BETTER.
oya guy in less than 10 matches we have seen a new side to the super eagles (set piece) so wat signs does he want again he commented like some1 full of heat it wasn't a criticism cuz he didn't criticise anything not to talk of it being constructive sef

am not impressed with the 2-0 win but that's not a sign that oliseh would fail cuz if so den the 3-0 against Cameroon is a sign oliseh will achieve so much and remind me in westerhoff's 1st matches which 1 did he win with 6 or 7 goal difference.

Westerhof said thrash? Ridiculous. This is a man that led Super Eagles to 3 AFCON tourney's in two of them, we finished with a bronze medal and in the third, we won it.

The Cameroun match is a sign of great things we can do but we need to do it consistently as we did under Westerhof. There is no room for the kind of display we made against Swaziland.

So please, know who is speaking before you call it thrash. Sometimes when men like these speak, you keep quiet and listen.

Only someone with limited abilities will be satisfied with mediocrity. Coach Clemens Westerhof still rates Nigeria as a team that can perform as it used to.

He does not want us celebrating over such victory because for the Standard of the Super Eagles that is poor. If beating Swaziland is a call for Celebration, do you think that is not far below qualifying for the World Cup.

Coach Oliseh should be disappointed with the performance and expect his players to buckle up. Instead most of us saw Swaziland as a huge obstacle.

Just like a father who sees a credit in his sons report and say, should I celebrate this? Result like this will not make you a Super star in your field.

It is constructive, if you know that Coach Oliseh is like a son to Coach Westerhof.

See jonsing. I was too young then, barely watching football. I thought the game, Westerhof almost cried when we lost in 1990 was the Semi Final.

I am sorry.

Imagine the NFA, sacking Coach Westerhof, after such performances. Sacked in 1994 after the best ever reign of the Super Eagles. Sacked for Amodu Shuaibu.
