Abiodun Obafemi and Teslim Fatusi were part of the 1993 U20. Emmanuel Amuneke played at the 1991 AAG (Cairo 91).

Garba Lawal was in Esparence de Tunis, Taribo West was in Julius Berger while Kingsley Obieku was in d Nigerian league also. And all 3 were part of the qualifiers and were nt picked from Europe to be infused into d team.

OK, but Teslim Fatusi and Abiodun Obafemi failed with the Under 20.

You're right about Garba Lawal (Esparence is a top club in Africa) but Kingsley Obiekwu ( didn't play a single minute in the Olympics) and Taribo West was not in Julius Berger or the Nigerian National League prior to the Olympics football game. They were both already established players with Go Ahead Eagles(Holland) and Auxurre (France) in Europe. In short, Taribo helped his club to win the Division 1(second level of French league) and Coupe de France prior to the Olympics.

Anyway, I will gladly continue with that team profiles.

You are 100% right here. I think this problem does not fall only on the coaches but the NFF. We should put up a fight to increase the pool of players in the pool of our National teams.

Agbonlahor also pointed this out. He says we do not contact them early enough and they do not feel wanted by the Nation.

The NFF should set up a committee on this. They should contact the players and find out those that are interested. Then the NFF should forward the names of interested players to the coaches.

That is exactly what should be done. You're right on point.

But, Emmanuel Amunike was an A Super Star in Nigeria and Africa, Egypt before he went to Europe. The young man racked medals in African club football.

I know now. I know where I am driving my point to.

yeah who doesn't know Mikel is a good passer?..

u see their is a football adage that says that u are as good as ur last game...
now Mikel I know recently isn't the one I knew few years back..
in life.. improvement should be our priority and not depreciation..
....what happened to..contract reviews?..
when mata knew the handwriting on the clock.. he left for good.. so did dimaria and CO.

but in the case of Mikel. reverse is the case..

maybe one of the major thing keeping him there is the money..

mourinho doesn't like u.. fine.. get the fuk out..

go somewhere u are wanted for good. but guess what.. he doesn't give a fuk..

u saw Chelsea match against Bournemouth?

u saw Costa reaction after he was benched? yeah that's sign of hungry..
when last did Mikel complain been benched?
and right after that match mourinho was interviewed on Costa reaction.. he went ahead you mention great players that has already sat on the bench..
he mentioned hazard.. Terry.. Pedro.. guess what he didn't even mention Nigeria best mildfielder..

I THINK MIKEL I KNOW NOW IS LIVING IN PAST GLORIES UNLESS HE PROVES OTHERWISE..

I personally can't stand being benched in an ordinary training we do over here talking more of in a match.

[b]You can not put Mikel in the shoes of Costa. How many Nigerians have reached the stage Mikel has reached? Chelsea bench self, few. It is not beans for Africans. I noticed that many of us didn't really know how Nigeria(the dream team) was able to concur the world to emerge the winners at the 1996 Olympics football game in Atlanta. Many people do not really know how the so called Nigeria underdog team that were so called after been humiliated in their last friendly match at the National stadium prior to the Olympics which I personally witnessed at the stadium were able to defeat the almighty Brazilian and Argentina teams that paraded the best players in the world at that time or later became the best players in the world after the Olympics e.g Ronaldo, Bebeto, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Dede, Juninhor, Ortega, Hernan Crespo, Ayala, Diego Simon, etcetera etcetera.

This achievement didn't just come by mere luck or by trial and error. This feat was possible because the coach identified and picked players that were tested and trusted in top European leagues. Players that have already established themselves in their own clubs and in top European leagues. In fact, most of those players have already won laurels for themselves and their respective clubs. These laurels ranges from African footballer of the year, UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, Africa nations cup, Eredivisie, Belgium pro league, Highest goal scorer(for their team), English FA cup, Belgium young player of the year, Coupe the France etcetera prior to the Olympics.

In this light, I want to present to you the profiles of these players before they made history by winning the Olympics football game in Atlanta in 1996. These will further help buttress my point that believe best players must be selected based on club performance rather than sentiment.

Celestine Babayaro: He is one of the best left back player Nigeria ever produced. Prior to the 1996 Olympics football game, Babayaro was already a regular players with Anderletch for two good seasons (1994/1995 & 1995/1996) in First Division. He helped his team to win the 1994/1995 league and 1995/1996 Belgium Super cup prior to the Olympics in 1996 which earned him the Belgian young football player of the year twice in both seasons.

Taribo West: Taribo seems to be the only player that was brought from a second division team in Europe to play in the 1996 Olympics. However, he helped Auxerre to successful win the Division 1 league to gain promotion into the Eredivisie league in 1996\1997 and the Coupe the France cup in 1994 & 1996 prior to the first victorious Olympics football game by an African team. His just promoted team won the 1996/1996 Ligue 1. As we can see he played regular before he man our defense at the Olympics.

Nwankwo-kanu: grin This name is a house hold name in Nigeria. He doesn't need much introduced but for the sake of those who don't know him before the Olympics, I will highlight his profile. He won 3 Eredivisie league(1993/1994,1994/1995 & 1996/1997), UEFA Champions League (1994/1995), UEFA Super Cup(1995) and Intercontinental Cup(1995) before he singlehandedly and heroically punctured the dreams of Ronaldo and his co dreamers from winning the Olympics for the first time with his sublime and well taken two goals that earned us the Finals. As you also see he was used to winning for top teams before.......

To be continued.....

Uche Okechukwu: He went to the Olympics as one of the three over aged players. Uche (the gentle giant) was already an established player with the Super Eagles and had also won laurels with the National team. However, his inclusion in the dream team was strictly based on his form at that time. Prior to the Olympics, he helped Fernerbahce to win the Super Lig in 1995/1996 season.

Emmanuel Amuneke: Amunike was also chosen as an over ages player. This is simply because prior to the Olympics, he helped Sporting Lisbon to win the Portuguese cup in 1994\1995 season and he was the best player in Nigeria at that time.

Tijani Babangida: He was already on the book of Roda FC in the Eredivisie league since 1991 and he was already a prolific goal scorer. In 1992/1993 season he scored 16 league goals for VVV Venlo in the Eerste Divisie (next to Eredivisie) which was enough to make them gain promotion to the Eredivisie. In 1993/1994 season he scored 11 league goals for Roda FC in the Eredivisie. He went ahead to become the highest goal scorer for Roda FC in the 1995/1996 season with 10 goals, and he also scored goals in UEFA Cup competition prior to the Olympics.

Wilson Oruma: He was the highest goal scorer in the Under 17 world Cup with 4 goals but before then he already played in Ligue 1 with Lens for two seasons( 1994/1995 & 1995/1996). And that was what got him the invitation to the Under 17 in the first place. However, as we can see, he was actively involved in club football prior to the Olympics.

Teslim Fatusi: He helped the the team to qualify for the Olympics football game with his goals. However he played regularly for Acec Mimosa, Servertte(Switzerland) and Ferencvaros(Hungary) prior to the Olympics.

Jay Jay Okocha: This guy had already found himself in the Nigerian National team since 1993. He was even part of the 1994 Nations Cup winning team and the 1994 FIFA world Cup team. Although, he was not really a key player for the National team during those period(1993-1994) but he was already an established player with Eintrach Frankfort in the Bundesliga for 4 good seasons prior to the Olympics. In fact, his goal was voted goal of the season and goal of the year in 1993. He achieved all these at the age of 22 years.

Victor Ikpeba: This why I said a player must be tested and trusted before they are invited for the Olympics. The Prince of Monaco was already a prolific goal scorer at the age of 20 with 17 goals for his Belgium team in the 1992/1993 season. This caught the eyes of Arsene Wenger to bring him to Monaco. However, he never disappointed with his goals that led to major titles. He was very outstanding for his club subsequent to the Olympics with 13 goals which helped them win the Ligue 1 title in 1996/1997 season. The point is, Ikpeba was a proven prolific goal scorer in Europe before going to Olympics.

Abiodun Obafemi: He played for Toulouse in France prior to the Olympics. In fact, he played 25 league games in the 1995/1996 season.

Daniel Amokachi: Amokachi was already a full squad player of the Nigeria National team since 1990. However, prior to the Olympics football game, he singlehandedly helped Everton to win the FA cup in 1995/1996 season. That alone gave him the call up to play at the Olympics.

Sunday Oliseh: Sunday Oliseh played regularly for three good seasons in First division (Belgium), 1 full season in the Serie-a with Regina and 1 full season in the Bundesliga for Koln prior to the Olympics. In fact, he was already a Super Eagles player.

Kingsley Obiekwe: He played regularly for Go Ahead Eagles in Eredivisie 1995/1996 season.

Garba Lawal: He was a regular player for his club and the Nigeria National team before the Olympics.

Mobile Opara: He was also part of the Under 17 world Cup winning team. He was able to establish himself in the Belgian league before the Olympics to.

Note: All these players were able to achieve all these things at the age of 22 years.

Do you know that in your list of Foreign based players who are eligible for the Olympics, none of them are up to the class of the players of the 1996 Olympics. Kanu was already a star player of the Champions League winning Ajax.

Finidi George was the best winger in the World But he could not make it into the team as an overage player.

Now, which right winger in your list of foreign players will you place over Tongoli Tonbara?

It is not just calling them but remember it takes time for players to adjust to the coaches philosophy. So Coach Siasia can not just drop his present lads and fill the team with Foreigners. Clubs can also delay the release of players, which can frustrate the coaches plans.

All these players are professionals, they can easily adjust to any coach philosophy.

He will have no choice but to drop when he sees better players.

I don't think clubs can delay players from FIFA recognized competition.

Barca delayed Messi. Argentina had to use FIFA to get him. The clubs can.

Even professional players take time to adjust. Remember how Terry fumbled playing to Villas-Boas philosophy. That was a top class defender. One of the best in the world.

At the end, I think the Coach should invite as many as he can. Select those who can meet up to his demands. This includes players that can easily adapt to his games.

Of course, I am aware of the dearth of players in top European leagues when you compare them to the 1996 Olympics class.

However, we can still get something closer to that.

Finidi George was not eligible to play in that competition simply because of his age.

The answer Is very simple. Moses Simon.

Long before the 1994 Nations Cup winning team, Nigeria sort her players from the local leagues and that was because Nigeria league was very good at that time.

So, it was natural for us to sort players from the National League from 60s to late 80s.

However, only 4 players from our league were included in the 1994 Nations Cup winning team.

Representatives of Victor Osimhen have moved quickly to dismiss reports emanating from the local media that the Nigeria Under 23 international has jetted off to England to seal a deal with an unnamed English Premier League club.

The Golden Eaglets star left the Dream Team’s camp in Dakar for Lagos a day before the delegation returned to Abuja, as the date on his return ticket was different from those issued to his teammates.

“Victor Osimhen is in Lagos, he came back to Nigeria before the team. There will be a violation of international laws if he travels unaccompanied to England because he is a minor, ” Osimhen’s rep told a llnigeriasoccer.com.

“He has been in Lagos since Sunday. The excuse they gave us was that his ticket was booked a day ahead. ”

After the Flying Eagles crashed out of the Fifa Under 20 World Cup in June, Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Granada’s Isaac Success departed New Zealand a day before the rest of the squad, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that Osimhen was booked on another flight.

The 16 - year - old Osimhen is attracting interest from clubs based in England, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Italy due to his recent displays for the national teams, most especially the Golden Eaglets.

John Obi Mikel’s intermediary has reacted to speculations in the local media suggesting that the Chelsea midfielder has made himself available to coach Samson Siasia for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The defensive midfielder’s intermediary has also provided an update on reports linking the Nigeria international with a move to Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan and Super Lig giants Galatasaray when the transfer window opens.

“Mikel may leave Chelsea at the end of this season, he has been complaining about his lack of game time. Arsenal wanted him this summer but Chelsea blocked the move, preferring to sell him outside England, ” Mikel’s rep told allnigeriasoccer.com.

“Galatasaray and Beijing Guoan are still in touch with him but nothing has been concluded. There is nothing concrete yet, he has told Beijing Guoan what he wants.

“It is not true that he wants to play in the Olympic Games, which is mainly for U23 players.”
The 28 - year - old Mikel has made nine appearances for Chelsea in all competitions so far this season.

Nigeria: I'm Celebrating Dream Team VI Success in Triple Fold, Says Siasia

Samson Siasia, Head Coach of the National Under-23 football team, said in Abuja on Monday that he was celebrating its championship triumph in Senegal, in three folds.

Siasia, who said this at the secretariat of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on arrival from Senegal, told newsmen that his celebration was capped with the championship trophy.

The Dream Team VI defeated Algeria 2-1 in the final match to lift the title against all odds.

According to Siasia, securing 2016 Olympics ticket and the release of his mother kidnapped in Bayelsa prior to the championship, made the outing a three-in-one achievement.

He noted that the perseverance of his players and his determination to remain focused led to the success of the team.

"The kidnap of my mother took a lot out of me but I know there was nothing I can do in Senegal.

"So, I decided to be focused and think about something else that could inspire me to do well with the team I have.

"I was only hoping to qualify for the Olympics not the kidnapping of my mother because there was nothing I could do at that moment since I was not in Bayelsa.

"I was only keeping in touch with the people at home to ensure they get her out and thank God it paid off because we qualified for the Olympics, won the trophy and my mother was released," Siasia said.

The coach commended his players for their doggedness during the championship and thanked Nigerians for their support and prayers.

He, however, urged the National Sports Commission and the NFF to ensure the team began early to prepare for the 2016 Olympics to avoid a repeat of the miserable experiences of the African championship.

He said, "I was only hoping to qualify for the Olympics, at least that would have been the best for me, going by our preparation; our preparation wasn't the best.

"We had only 12 days to prepare in Gambia, coupled with other issues, while other countries had about two months or more.

"I was looking at us picking the second place or third place at least to get to Brazil, but thank God for the perseverance of the players because it paid off."

Siasia, who arrived the NFF secretariat at about 6 p.m., handed the under-23 trophy won in Senegal to the General Secretary of the NFF, Mohammed Sanusi.

Sanusi, who received the trophy on behalf of NFF President Amaju Pinnick, urged Siasia to ensure he submitted his programme for the 2016 Olympics in time to avoid a fire-brigade approach.

NAN also reports that most of the players dispersed from Lagos on arrival from Senegal.

Goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel and Sincere Seth were among those that arrived in Abuja with Siasia.

Daniel, who is the goalkeeper of Enugu Rangers, left Abuja immediately for Kaduna to see his family members. Seth plays for the Supreme Court FC, Abuja.

The team had since been decamped pending the submission and approval of the team's 2016 Olympics programme by the NFF.

Awoniyi: U-23 Eagles Will Be Stronger At 2016 Olympics

By Izuchukwu Okosi:
Nigeria U-23s striker Taiwo Awoniyi is hopeful that the team will be too strong for opposition at next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Awoniyi was part of the team that achieved qualification to the Games courtesy of their triumph at the 2015 CAF U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal.

Awoniyi spoke to Comple tesportsnigeria.com from his base in Germany.
“The competition was held outside FIFA calendar and most clubs refused to release their players. We did have a strong team in Senegal but it would have been nice if we had some players the coach wanted,” Awoniyi explained.

“All the same I’m believing that having made it, we’ll be stronger at the Olympics because we will have most of the players needed.”

Awoniyi admits that a knee injury limited his impact in the team.
“The injury stopped me from playing in the final against Algeria which pained me really. I wanted to play in it as I told you. I feel I didn’t do as much as I could,” he added.

Responding further to Comple tesportsnigeria.com’s questions, Awoniyi says he cannot play for now for FSV Frankfurt in the second division in Germany due to the latest setback.

“The team could not hold a party for me when I returned. I’m injured but hopefully will start playing soon,” the 2013 U-17 World Cup winner said.

Algeria and South Africa join Nigeria as Africa’s representatives at next year’s Olympics. Senegal will take part in a play-off to negotiate qualification to the Rio Games.

‘Rio Olympic gold not impossible’
By: Humphrey Njoku

Fatai Amoo

Nigeria’s Dream Team VI assistant coach, Fatai Amoo has said it is not impossible for the side to recapture the 96’ Atlanta performance at the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Nigerians emerged winners and earned an instant ticket to the Olympics together with runners-up, Algeria and South Africa at the just concluded 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal.

However, Amoo said for the present squad to inch closer to the golden performance of 96’Atlanta the Dream Team VI must be overhauled 100% in its entirety.

“Impossible is nothing, it’s quite possible the present squad go ahead to win gold at the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio as the 96’ Atlanta set performed in the years back but not under the present scenario that preceded the side campaign at the just concluded Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal.

“The motivation for this current squad and coaching crew is low compared with the 1996 Olympic team.

“Of course, we must overhaul the team by getting the best players all over the world not overlooking some shining stars in the present squad.

“Things must changed completely in addition to total overhaul of the team as we will be meeting the world best in Rio for us to hope for a repeat performance of 96’ Atlanta golden era,” said the former Nigerian assistant coach to supersport.com.

Amoo said his side surpassed their mandate at the just concluded 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in Senegal.

“The first objective handed to us by the football house is the Olympic ticket we achieved the target by qualifying for Rio Olympics and we went ahead to win the championship trophy to keep something in the archives and a record for ourselves and Nigerians.

“We are fulfilled as far as Africa U-23 Cup of Nations is concerned the next is the Olympics,” said the former Sunshine Stars coach.

The team arrived the country early on Monday while the contingent was dispersed to their respective homes at various locations.

Swedish Allsvenskan side Kalmar FF have vowed to keep a close watch on Liverpool youngster Taiwo Awoniyi ahead of a possible loan swoop for the Nigerian striker.

Kalmar saw Liverpool pip them to the signing of the youngster, who turned out for Nigeria at the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups before progressing to his country's Under-23 side at the age of just 18.

"We keep in touch with both Taiwo and Liverpool and formally he is on loan to Frankfurt until the summer", Kalmar sports manager Thomas Andersson toldKalmar 24.

It remains to be seen whether Kalmar will eventually persuade Liverpool to allow the Nigerian starlet to link up with the club on loan.

Kalmar have completed the 2015 Swedish season and managed to finish just one spot above the relegation playoff zone in the Allsvenskan.

Awoniyi meanwhile has played just once for FSV Frankfurt so far this season, in the German Cup for 18 minutes.

Siasia vows to get stronger team for Olympics

• Says mother’s kidnap destabilised him

The Chief Coach of Dream Team VI, Samson Siasia has vowed to mould a very strong team that would be a pride to Africa and Nigeria when the Olympic Football Tournament kicks off next summer.

Now that we have qualified for the Olympics we need to go all out to solidify this team. The boys have done so well so most of them will be retained while we will bring in quality players that can add strength to this team. This time around we are facing the world and we should be ready to face the world. This time around the biggest target should be winning the gold medal”, Siasia confessed to SportingLife.

Siasia, as blunt as ever, also revealed that there were lots of hiccups and predicaments that made winning the competition very difficult. He, however, showered encomiums on his players for weathering the storm to emerge African Champion.

“Honestly the preparations weren’t the best but we focused on qualifying at least for the Olympics. We had only 12 days in Gambia which other countries that also participated had two months and more for preparing for the same tournament. We had other issues too but I was looking at second place or worst scenario the third place to get to Brazil so that we can have a strong team before the start of the Olympics in Rio.
But thank God for these boys, for their perseverance and hard work which eventually paid off.

“Winning the Africa U- 23 Cup of Nations trophy makes me feel very good. I am relieved not just qualifying for next year’s Olympics in Rio, Brazil but winning the trophy at stake too. It is like putting the icing on a cake. So I am happy that we had a lot of prayers, text messages from Nigerians who actually prayed for us to win

“We did not worry about the problems we faced during the competition but we played like Champions and we eventually emerged Champions. This was due to hard work on our part and most importantly the prayers of soccer loving Nigerians who supported us all the way and God actually listened to their prayers.

So I am very proud of my players and our fans too.
“As regards the kidnap issue of my mother, sincerely speaking it took a lot out of me. I knew there was nothing I could do in Bayelsa while I was in Senegal. I just tried to think about something else that can inspire me to do well with the team that I have. I was looking at trying to qualify the team for the Olympics and not worried about the kidnap of my mother. As at that time there was nothing I could do about it. I was just calling home and trying to know how we can get her out.

“Finally it paid off because we qualified for the Olympics and actually won the Cup and my mother was also released. So it was three in one victory. I just thank God for what he has done for me and the team. The prayers of Nigerians and the hard work on the part of the boys eventually paid off”, Siasia told SportingLife.
