It's amazing how no matter what the level of education some people attained, they still refused to be civilized.
What a pity!

ps2:
The bible said something in Galatians 3:13,"For Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the Law".It also said a woman must leave her family and join to her husband and they shall be one flesh. Religiously speaking she can get married. Tribal discrimination must end...

mark 12:17 also says give to ceasar what belongs to ceasar and to God what belongs to God and his reply completely amazed them...

point is if she is going to go ahead with it then she has to be really in christ so as to prevail any repercussions that comes after.

U sound like a child born in the nineties. You children know absolutely nothing

People much older than you abolished slave trade, killing of twins etc when they saw reasons. You can hold your ancestors' ways of life very close to your heart. Enjoy!

No actually I don't. I have very good and close friends who are Osu.
I love them just like any other, I respect them, I eat and dine with them. We just understand that this has nothing to do with marriage. I actually don't like the caste system in Igbo land, but I respect my culture and understand the seriousness. Is it right?..NO.
My problem is with those who wave away this serious Igbo culture and belief system. The same people who advise people to engage in Osu marriage.

An interesting example was Chief Micheal Okpara the then Eastern Nigeria premier who passed a law against the Osu caste system, but when his kinsmen asked him to give his daughter's hand in marriage to an Osu man, he refused.

My other problem is that Osu families know themselves and know that this problem exists, but they are constantly playing this game. They will never voluntarily tell a free born until it's too late. By the way, osu's are the best educated in Igbo land and are usually very good looking. They first embraced Christianity and benefited from early education from the missionaries while the rest of the free born stuck to their shrines.
They know to marry themselves, but no they prefer to cause problems in families as in this case.
Why pregnant this girl, when you don't have approval of her family yet and when you are not married. Isn't that bad enough?

why impregnate this girl? As if u were there wen dey were making love...stop passing judgement.

Osu caste system is an ancient practice in Igbo land, in which somebody or a family is considered to be a property to the gods of the land they are considered sacred and some are used for sacrifice and are forbid to participate in any village activities or holding any title thus are banished and don't have any business with anyone. Most of them are extremely beautiful and very intelligent that's why the believe the belong to the gods and the posses special powers. That's in ancient Igbo land before civilization. Most villages in Igbo land have abolished this practice due to religion and civilization but some still consider this practice because of the fear of wrath of the gods. OSU normally marry themselves and if a freeborn marries an osu you are forbid to have a child with that person and you will equally be banished from the land.. Hope you are satisfied.
hmmm, nawa for dis kind tradition o,I'm just forced to comment

For a preamble and for the benefit of those visitors without the necessary background knowledge of the subject here discussed, OSU, like the “Dalits” of India is a caste system in the Igbo speaking areas of South Eastern Nigeria, Africa. OSU are people tainted by their birth into a caste system that deems them impure and less human. According to legend, OSU came into being as a result of human sacrifice to the gods wherein a person usually a slave or a war-spoil, instead of being physically killed as a sacrifice to the gods is spared the butcher’s knife and instead dedicated symbolically to the deity as its’ property. The implication therefore is that such a person breathes and exists for the deity and none other; and assumes the stature of a lesser human who has been sacrificed as an offal to the gods. Regrettably these human-sacrifices married and procreated thus transferring unto their descendants the stigma of their “burnt-offering” status; which also make them properties of the gods that their forebears were sacrificed to. The downside is that these “people” because of their very lowly and sometimes “non-existent” status in the society are forced to reconcile their fate to the worthless and basest of a given Igbo society; wherein they found themselves and nobody seriously speaking, wants any association with them be it marriage, neighborhood, business and/or other associations that brings people together. One who is a free born cannot marry the lowly caste OSU and vice-versa. An OSU cannot also aspire to be a high chief or ruler/king in the society wherein they are born. This practice is prevalent within the Igbo society and its denial sometimes is for public relations purposes only. Several legislation have been targeted at this practice which so many have come to regard as inhuman practice aka man’s inhumanity to man; but is the OSU really man or human in the eye of the Igbo society wherein the practice thrives to date?
This blogger remembers quite vividly too, a traditional ruler (king) who wanted to outlaw the OSU practice. He summoned his Igwe - in- council (cabinet) for a parley wherein he intimated them of his intentions. According to the story, this Chief informed his council that he plans to outlaw the practice of OSU in his domain. After he finished speaking, one of the elders in the council raised his hand for recognition to speak or contribute to the deliberation. He was granted the floor to speak and all he did was ask the Chief if he would, as a show of goodwill allow his daughter to be married away to an OSU. The Chief was livid with anger and demanded to know where from the speaker got his audacity to speak on the subject as it appertains to his princess. And this was the last bus stop for the proposed legislation in the Igwe-n-councilThe irony for victims of OSU practice is that no amount of wealth they may acquire is ever enough to wash them off this stigma. Also their rise in the society of their ancestry is always stunted forcing most of them to take a long hard refuge in a foreign soil where they sometimes live out the rest of their lives agonizing of this fate; which though not self-inflicted but a result of generational apron string, are yoked down irrevocably to the tabooed status of being an OSU. It is such a very painful experience to undergo and no one should wish that - being an OSU on his worst enemy, indeed!
This blogger also knows one prominent well to do family who were living happily until one of the daughters decided to marry. She fell in love with this young medical doctor practicing in New York City – they moved in together and within nine months had a baby. Then the traditional marriage rites started in earnest wherein the man sent words to his family still in Nigeria to proceed with formalizing their relationship. Wherein it was discovered that the bride came from an OSU family and this was no brainier; so the child notwithstanding, the marriage or jactitation or semblance thereto has to be terminated [/b] forthwith because the father of the groom was a politician who would not want any taint whatsoever, of an OSU, as a daughter in-law. The girl moved to the west coast with her daughter and presently lives in southern California as a single mother. The groom has since re-married but the girl has not been that lucky as all the men who came around always jumps the ship as soon as the story of her ancestry reached their ears.
hmmm, nawa for all dis igbo tradition o

What you are saying is understandable, but I believe true love defies everything. The personal experiece you narrated does not mean that parents are right at all times, are they? So you mean a backward Igbo calling somebody Osu is enough to invalidate a loving romance? Come on guys!!

A female friend of mine brought up an issue that have been bothering her so much she said that she needs an urgent advice on what to do. Here's her story
She met a guy last year in a friend's get together party and they both fell for each other. According to her story the guy works with an insurance company in Lagos and my friend was about to go for her NYSC when they both met. So because of the heated romance between them, she decided to work her NYSC posting to Lagos state. During her service year the guy proposed to her and she accepted. So they both went for family introduction. Few months after her introduction, her father called her and told her that she should come home that there's something urgent he wants to tell her. When she traveled back home, her dad told her that the have done some investigation into the guy's Family and the discovered that the guy is an OSU ( meaning outcast in Igbo land) and their village still practice the osu caste system. So the implication there is the both can't get married. And if she insist in getting married to him that her family will not be part of it, literally she's on her own with the guy, she's so heart broken now because she loves her family and she told me she can't imagine her world without him. And more so she's few weeks pregnant for him and the have started making plans for their wedding. How can she break this news to her fiancee?!!.. She told me she rather dies than not marry him.

Please I would appreciate matured advice only because this is really a sensitive issue that involves tradition and beliefs, no attacking of any personality or ethnic group. it can happen to anyone out there. Thanks

As long as Osu is the only issue in this wonderful romance, your friend should not think twice before going ahead with the marriage

This has nothing to do with civilization. I think its only d igbo tribe that practice this osu caste system. To me the real question should be:
1) have we really sat down to ask d real history/reason for this segregation?
2)why is it that our igbo parents no matter how religious or holy they are, always fight against d marriage of their kids to someone from an Osu background?
3)do we realize dat in d bible Osu exist too? check 2 king 5:20-27?
Are u surprised?yes it does. Elisha placed a curse on his servant, Gehazi with leprosy down to his entire generation. Imagine wat would become of a lady dat marries someone from Gehazi lineage.
The point i am making is that although we are in the 21st century,in a jet age etc we should not for one moment think that historical /cultural issues like Osu isnt relevant.Instead,we should ask questions and investigate how they came about been one.Listen to ur parents......Goodluck!!!

This is a critical issue that requires a REAL thinking.
To commentators,it is an EASY thing to give advice.
OP, please advise your friend to reason with her parents because if a dog doesn't see something it will never bark.

NB:IN THIS WORLD THERE ARE TWO THINGS THAT CAN NEVER BLIND ME; RELIGION AND LOVE.

U not gonna be the first to diss... Like.... ion bloody care tongue

Now, i tell you.. clarifying my post. Is there a fight, stress or misunderstanding free marriage?

Me putting down the list doesn't meant u must have a yes from them b4 the marriage...
are you guys this DUMB! angry

What am trying to pass across is, there are things they see that the lover wont notice.
If they try and tell you to slow down a bit or giving the marriage a rethink...then the person
should....

As for those pointing at my four list... Here is more clarity

1. if u don't believe in your pastor knowing about your marriage, then you shouldnt tell me God matters!
2. If you tell me your parent doesn't matter in the choice, then same awaits you from your children too.
Mind you, ion know who you will run to for advice when the trouble starts.
3. You wanna neglect your siblings right? go ahead. I dont know if they will be there when you need someone around you or not
4. Friends too aren't neccessary... No probs, just go ahead and marry without seeking for advice and wisdom from elders!

I have said mine....

I am currently in a similar matter. My parents are raising hell cos I decided to part ways with the Catholic church, for nearly 8 years and counting. It is true that family is important, but there are certain decisions which one has to make ON HIS OR HER OWN. The highest is disowning or dissociation, but there are also people without families. My take: let there be a GodIfactor in all, and go right ahead. There will be repercussions o, but with God u will sail through.

Ndi Igbo si na nku mba na enyere mba nri which means that a community's firewood is used to prepare their meal and it gets their meal done. an uncle of mine and his wife gave birth to their 2nd son and baby came into d world wt crazy stuff all over his skin, docs did all the could, dermatologist and whatnot even the best skin specialist in LA did with all their df drug and cream they prescribed nothing worked untill thay visited home durin xmas years ago and this baby was about 3 then the oldest man in our family then at 119 saw him and called him by one archaic name( name of a late fam) and this kid ran to him and hugged him. He then told my uncle that the skin reaction was a result of the boy wanting to be born at home and not a foreign country that he should bathe him with our village stream water and four days after he was bathed everything cleared meanwhike some docs approached my uncle with lot of zeros of dollars asking to buy off the baby for an experiment in order to find cure in case of tomorrow or if ppl strt suffering such and he smacked the the one that had the guts to say such trash and luckily no legal action ensued. So our customs and similar things like that knows no boundaries at all bros. We r nt westerners no matter hw we try or be programmed to think we r Africans and in this case IGBOS. These things happens and i guess other nlers got stories too. These shitt gives no fk about location, wish someone will teach it geography though hahahha.
