OK this might be coming a bit late.
I AGREE with your points, honestly. But that's only because i personally wouldn't woo my wife's friend too. someone who would will definitely come out with reasons, valid reasons why they wouldn't mind. It happened that the guy in question sees everything from a different perspective from you and me. I don't think that you presume there is a right or wrong solution on any issue where humans have to rationalize.
things that are not actually wrong seems so when we do them at the wrong time. obviously the wife's death is still fresh in memory so our reasons are not devoid of sentiment. peoples reactions suggest the man should probably be mourning naturally after 4 months. whoever he chooses to marry depends only on his principles, rationale and how much consideration he has for other people's opinions.
