lookandlaff:Yes. Whether or not one decides to use that brain, it's the person's call. Mine wasn't working when I was deep in mindless religion- it appeared religion was subtly opposed to the exercising of my mental powers. .. The more enlightened we become, the more we will loathe mindless religion. Yesterday I asked a sister what her plans and goals are for 2016. Read her reply...' I live for God'.......How could a sensible person say that? |

Prof! You are entitled to your opinion sir. How about saying, "rational/irrational thinking has distorted religion for so many people". Christians on nowadays want to be intelligent more than Jesus and Muslims want to be intelligent more than Prophet Muhammad. ...consequently, they began to introduce innovations which wasn't in the religions before. I don't know of Christianity but Islam reject at all innovations which wasn't in the religion before now. No rational/irrational thinking no matter how beautiful/appealing will change the pristine teachings of Islam. |

leofab:Like NORAD rightly said, Christianity is not a religion rather a way of life. Look at it this way, religion in its entirety including those you listed above started with men, but Christianity started with God. It's origin is as a result of those apostles in Antioch that exhibited the same type of life that Christ lived while he was on earth, people saw their distinct lifestyle that took after Christ and ended up calling them Christians ie Christ - Like. And mind you, Jewish religion has been in existence all those time even when Christ was still on earth. Most at times people mix up Christianity and religion and think they are the same but the gospel truth is that Christianity the way Christ showed us is actually an enemy of religion and doctrines of men. |

Bollinger:You were a bit too quick in clicking submit, too. I added something to the quote above. Again, let me ask you this question: What do you understand by the Dark Ages? Do you know why it was called that. And how about the Reformation? In Christendom, the catholic church NEVER represented the true church of Christ. Only Catholics will argue against this truth (call it assertion if you like). There was no Anglican, Baptist etc. then because Martin Luther (a catholic) was the one God used to revive the true church of Christ. I don't know if you've noticed but the true people of God have always been in the minority. It's a norm that'll never change. |

NORAD:Let's not delve away from the main issue at hand. This all too common on Nairaland. The issue at hand is of my opinion that life could be found on other planets, and if it is, how will it impact religion. And your's is that it is impossible to find life on other planets because it hasn't happened yet. Even though history has taught us not to underestimate the power of science. |

bxcode:This still baffle me though, the world is very mobile now, you can get Christian message on the go, the necessity to gather in a particular place is long loosing its value, I don't need to be in a particular setting to pray, read my bible and say my Graces. I agree they are churches that preach the gospel the way it is, but that's like finding a needle in a haystack. |

NORAD:i believe in humanity and not a supreme being that I can't see with my eyes..I wil start believing in your God when manna start falling again and all my humanly endeavours being taken care by an heavenly being but until then my allegiance is with my fellow humans whom I can't survive without... Thank you |

Religion particularly christianity exposed believers to God of miracles and many faithfuls therefore believe that their existence on this planet is essentially based on experiencing miracles(divine providence). This assumption is tied to the concept of predestination, and once the two (divine providence and predestination) become entrenched in a person's mind, rational thinking takes the back seat. I have wondered why God created man with higher sense if He didn't want him to apply it to finding solutions to problems. We fail to realize that things of God work in fullfilment of fundamental principles (aka laws of nature). It will be difficult for an automobile engineer to believe that an engine will function without say fuel in it. This is because the basic work of an engine is converting the chemical energy in the fuel to mechanical energy. What misunderstood religion teaches in respect of a car functioning without fuel is "faith" in God Who is capable of making the car to work even when all principles involved in the running of internal combustion engine are suspended. I want to believe that our reasoning faculty is diminished when we carry our faith to mundane things that common sense will provide solutions for. |

I think prof. Osundare should put it this way:- the wrong perception of people about religion has killed their rational thinking, the problem here is not the religion but the people because the religion when practice correctly promotes rational thinking. |

leofab:Trust me, even if manna falls right now, you still won't believe. Here's why: “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they [atheists] are without excuse" (Rom 1:20). |

NORAD:again people continue to prove the Prof's point abot absence of rational thinking, a man says he doesn't believe in your scripture and you are quoting scripture to him. |
| Re: Religion Has Killed Rational Thinking Of This Country - Prof. Osundare by Bollinger(m): 3:24pm On Jan 03, 2016 |
NORAD:Making the same mistake pre historic men made. Just because it hasn't, doesn't mean it couldn't. They said the same thing when scientists said they were going to the stars. Now you can watch cable and make phone calls because of it. |

Rational thinking is too polite. Religion has rendered most of the elderly Nigerians stupidd. Most of the young ones are born to be stupidd nowadays |

Bollinger:Stop quoting pre-historic men as it weakens your argument. There are billions of stars in the galaxy. They even believe there's, not one universe, but a multiverse. They've, over the years, sent powerful telescopes, spaceprobes, Voyager 1 and 2 (at least one of this two has even gone past the solar system!), Pioneer 10 and 11 (since 1972!) and myriads of others. I hate to break it to you but they're yet to even find an algae let alone an ant on any of these planets. Chances are they'll never find one in your lifetime. What will you do if this scenario plays out? |
| Re: Religion Has Killed Rational Thinking Of This Country - Prof. Osundare by Bollinger(m): 3:45pm On Jan 03, 2016 |
NORAD:It took thousands of tries to get the first rocket to break orbit. By your argument they should have have stopped after a while just because it hadn't happened yet. That makes sense. Fortunately for us, NASA does not agree. |
| Re: Religion Has Killed Rational Thinking Of This Country - Prof. Osundare by Nobody: 3:46pm On Jan 03, 2016 |
leksbore:Can you see how religion has ripped you off of empathy and compassion? That's what mindless religion does to weak minds. Whether you're religious person or not, challenges are a part of our existence; ALL men MUST have a fair share of challenges and difficult times. God isn't dealing with the Prof in any way. The current area pastor of my RCCG has a kid with an hearing aid fixed visibly on the left side of his head. That's life. Once you lose your compassion, your humanity is GONE. There's no heaven for cold hearted fellows. |
| Re: Religion Has Killed Rational Thinking Of This Country - Prof. Osundare by Nobody: 3:56pm On Jan 03, 2016 |
Bollinger:It's not about time in this case. Billions of planets have been probed for signs of life, and nothing positive so far. If you take the cumulative efforts modern scientists have put into shaming religion by looking for extraterrestrials, then you'll understand how many thousands of years we're taking about here. I'm a great lover of space exploration and often follow NASA's programmes keenly. But I do this to wonder at God's wonderful creation. This things prove His existence and not otherwise. Those who don't believe in Him err greatly. |

NORAD:Again your whole premise is that because we have tried it can never happen. Then what's the point of space exploration? NASA understands this which is why they keep probing. A lot of the advances made today is because they did not stop because it hadn't "happened yet". |

| Re: Religion Has Killed Rational Thinking Of This Country - Prof. Osundare by Nobody: 4:20pm On Jan 03, 2016 |
NORAD:Millions of years before we discovered the world was round, Several millenia before we "discovered" America. You really expect after only 50 years of space exploration to find anything? Do you know a sophisticated Ancient city considered to be the largest in the ancient world was recently discovered by Archeologists, do you know that the white man was amazed at the technology behind the Benin bronze industry and considered it highly advanced and ahead of it's time There is evidence of sophisticated ancient civilizations long before us if only we put down our bibles and picked up a book every now and again and actually tried to educate ourselves, if only we watched discovery channel instead of Africa magic and benny Hinn/Morris cerrullo. |
