1. The church was indeed the catholic faith. There was no anglican, protestant, baptist, etc.

2. The fact that the opinion that the earth was round and held by all, and contrary views were quashed by the "church", is, like i said previously, the norm. The Church was the state. Nothing was done without the consent of the church. So raising a view contrary to the church was life threatening.

3. You prove my points by just typing. You said "regarding a visit to the stars, well if you lived in that era, you'd believe the same thing too". There is a reason we often fall back on history so as not to make mistakes in the future. If the folks back in the day underestimated the power of science, why should we in this day and age do the same thing. We would be making the same mistakes they made. I said it is possible that life could be found on other planets and you said it is impossible, thereby making the same mistakes our ancestors made. There is nothing like impossible when it pertains to science. Just because it hasn't happened yet does not mean it couldn't.

You were a bit too quick in clicking submit, too. I added something to the quote above. Again, let me ask you this question: What do you understand by the Dark Ages? Do you know why it was called that. And how about the Reformation? In Christendom, the catholic church NEVER represented the true church of Christ. Only Catholics will argue against this truth (call it assertion if you like).

There was no Anglican, Baptist etc. then because Martin Luther (a catholic) was the one God used to revive the true church of Christ.

Like NORAD rightly said, Christianity is not a religion rather a way of life. Look at it this way, religion in its entirety including those you listed above started with men, but Christianity started with God. It's origin is as a result of those apostles in Antioch that exhibited the same type of life that Christ lived while he was on earth, people saw their distinct lifestyle that took after Christ and ended up calling them Christians ie Christ - Like. And mind you, Jewish religion has been in existence all those time even when Christ was still on earth.
Most at times people mix up Christianity and religion and think they are the same but the gospel truth is that Christianity the way Christ showed us is actually an enemy of religion and doctrines of men.

Permit me to say that your points are quite valid in the sense that most churches today are just mere gatherings and performance of weekly religious rituals without Jesus as the focus of worship as it is meant to be. People go to church today just to fulfill all righteousness and get God of their back for the rest of the week. They pay tithe and settle God for the month and return to their bribery and corruption. In summary, there's a whole lot of people that needs to hear the gospel truth and a whole number of them are in churches today.
But bro, distancing yourself from the gathering of brethren for a long time can backfire, remember the wiles of the enemy and how deceptive he can be. There are still some good churches today because it's not possible for the body of Christ to be prevailed completely by the gates of hell. All you need do is to pray that the holy spirit will lead you to that church that will uplift you whenever you come around and will leave you feeling awesome after each service without perversion of the gospel truth.

Let's not delve away from the main issue at hand. This all too common on Nairaland. The issue at hand is of my opinion that life could be found on other planets, and if it is, how will it impact religion. And your's is that it is impossible to find life on other planets because it hasn't happened yet. Even though history has taught us not to underestimate the power of science.

Haven't been to church for sometime now, months it is, went today and it seem I'm feeling disconnected with the doctrine of the church and the idea as a whole, I do listen to Christian podcast(Joel Osteen preferably)for those time I wasn't in church and still feel more fulfilled hearing the word unfiltered just by meself not influenced by anyone..
Will take another lengthy time before I step into church again, christianity to me is a state of mind, and such state can be achieved when you @ the confine of your home or anywhere.

There are billions of stars in the galaxy. They even believe there's, not one universe, but a multiverse.

They've, over the years, sent powerful telescopes, spaceprobes, Voyager 1 and 2 (at least one of this two has even gone past the solar system!), Pioneer 10 and 11 (since 1972!) and myriads of others.

I hate to break it to you but they're yet to even find an algae let alone an ant on any of these planets.

Chances are they'll never fine one in your lifetime. What will you do if this scenario plays out?

I beg to differ, I believe the problem is more with our mentality than religion coz it's same religion here that obtains in the U.S, Europe n Asia yet it's not affected their thinking. we are the masters of our doom,religion after politics is the most lucrative business around n as generation become more n more lazy to pray n seek religious knowledge so does the industry grow.its unbeatable what ppl do to expand n keep religious business afloat, hence, mentality, sentiment drove n is still driving us to the background and not religion
