This is actually the first time that I will be creating a post on NL. But as the saying goes, a desperate situation requires a desperate measure.
I do not truly believe in love until I met Sophia. Fast forward 12 months; my love for her still grows by each passing day. I promised to marry her. She loves me like mad. But the problem is that her parents do not want her to marry outside her state, let alone my state.
We are the same tribe but her mum by some reason does not like people from my state and has told my Sophia that I may be a good man but that if she marries me she (the mum) will never be happy.
I was expecting that with time the woman will soften her stand but this Christmas it became obvious she won't change. Now, a suitor from the same state is asking for my girl's hand in marriage and her mum wants her to marry the guy.
After speaking with my girl this night she told me that the pressure is too much because she cant go against her parents wish and that 'Mr. A (the suitor) is a nice guy too'. With that statement I feel that my girl is about leaving me.
So it's with a heavy heart I write this piece. I really need your advise. Thanks in anticipation!

Well, I'm sorry about ur situation. I've experienced something very similar before. I'll advise u to just give her ur blessings and let her go. That way u'll save urself from continuous and persistent heartache. If she's not bold, free and independent enough to make her own choices/decisions, or maybe she just easily gave up on u, then she's not a reliable and worthy wife material anyway, and ur better off without her.

Endless begging or talking won't really change things, it will only extend the period your heart would be troubled. The fact that she already told u she can't go against her parents proves that she doesn't have a problem taking the next step with sum1 else.

I'm speaking from experience, and just like i was advised; "it's most likely a blessing in disguise...most parents that feel they should always influence the lives of their grown up children won't ever let the marriage rest without some sort of family interference"... A failed relationship is better than a failed marriage.

Bro it's not just about igbos...so many Nigerians are crude like dat. If u hear my own experience sef, u go vex tire....and funniest thing is that most of these parents are supposedly learned.

Some parents can have a very strong hold on their children. My mum for instance has been telling the tribes she wants me to avoid when I want to get married but that is actually her problem because if I find a lady from that tribe and I'm convinced she'll make happy I'll marry her. But I believe it's a little more complicated if a lady is in this kind of position.

I really don't like being stressed but I guess fighting for love is not about the stressful. I'll suggest you tell your gf to talk to certain people her parents respect and will most likely listen to and share a different view from her parents and see how they can help convince them otherwise. I won't tell your gf to disobey her parents or become stubborn towards them but she should find ways to fight for the relationship even if it means making certain threats. If all sincere effort doesn't work then let everyone go their separate ways.
