That tourney saw d dawning of a new era.Friday Elastic Elahor, Amin Angwe(RIP), Daniel Amokachi, Rashidi Yekini, Thompson Oliha, Ben Iroha all featured prominently.

Elahor's left foot , great player.. Westerhof took a risk in that tournament. Fortunately, it paid off.

There are talks Kelechi will be joining the City's UCL squad to replace an injured Nasri

Bony is injured for now and Pelle has expressly stated City will not be looking to buy another striker in the January transfer window, couple that with the fact that City have rejected loan moves from West Ham, Bournemouth and Sunderland and Kelechi may just get that playing time.

Good News. Bt i hope it will nt be another 3-5mins playing time thing.

Yeah, he dropped Peter Rufai for little fancied Aloy Agu(the 1983 U20 goalie). He also dropped d mecurial Henry Nwosu for a Thompson Oliha ( a product of the 1987 Flying Eagles). He dropped the likes of Shegun and Wole Odegbami, Bright Omokaro (10-10), Ndubuisi Okosieme etc. He also brought in Daniel Amokachi, Amin Angwe, Friday Elahor, Friday Ekpo. He however, retained Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini and Austine Eguavoen. It was a squad mixed with experience and inexperience. Yekini, Elahor, Amokachi and Aloy Agu where stand out performers in that tourney.

Hmmm Algiers '90, I will never forget, Menaj Jamel and Raba Maja both of Algeria. Those guys were ballers.

He was not a starter in the Super Eagles in 93/94. A certain Thompson Oliha started over okocha.

He was flashy and had potential but the end result was often lacking.

No Okocha started at the nations cup and world cup, he was just misunderstood by the fans who thought he was showing off. To tell the truth Nigerians didn't really jump on his band wagon till Pele said he could walk into any Brazilian team.

Bros, Aloy Agu was the reason we were thrashed in Algiers 90. Rufai was obviously better than him but Westerhof wanted to bring his brother inlaw. He wanted to do the same in 1994 after losing twice with his in law but Nigerians went against his wish and Rufai was restored. The rest is history.

Segun Odegbami resigned from the National team in 1982 while Wole Odegbami never played for the National team. So, how can they be dropped?

At Tunisia 94, Okocha did not start every game. Same with the world cup.

Pellegrini: With Iheanacho, City Don’t Need New Striker

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has declared that the club will not go into the transfer market in January because he already has Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Nigerian youngster has scored three goals in his last seven games for City, including one in last weekend’s 3-0 FA Cup win over Norwich.

There had been speculation that the club might try to bring in another striker in the window but Pellegrini insists that there is already an answer to that question in his current squad.

“Kelechi (Iheanacho) has been involved from the first game of this season,” Pellegrini told a press conference on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Everton.

“He’s in the squad in that position and we have Bony, we have Sterling, we have Kun.

“It’s important for Kelechi to play like he did against Norwich. He’s the answer when you ask if we’re going to buy another striker – we have Kelechi.”

Pellegrini also confirmed that Wilfried Bony, Fernandinho, Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Samir Nasri will miss Wednesday night’s game.

However, the City boss did have better news to report on David Silva and Yaya Toure as the Chilean revealed that the pair who missed the Norwich FA Cup tie will return to the fold against the Toffees.

“It was good to rest both of them as they’re in the squad list for tomorrow – we’ll see who will be in the XI but we have to play two games so close together so we’ll see,” Pellegrini said.

“Silva is 100% fit – maybe it’s a risk for him to play Wednesday to Saturday.

“Kompany, Mangala, Fernandinho, Nasri and Bony – those five players are injured and not fit for tomorrow’s game.

“Mangala tried to work yesterday with normality but he couldn’t. He had some pain still in his muscle – for him, it’s best to wait a bit more. It’s the same for Fernandinho and Bony. For Kompany and Nasri, it’s longer.

“Vincent tried a lot of different things to try and find the cause of the injury so we have no update at this time.

“The target was to continue in the FA Cup and we did it – after that, it’s always important to keep a clean sheet away – better than that, to score three goals.

“Two or three players also returned from injury like Delph, Fernando and Zabaleta so it was useful for that too.”

Wednesday marks the second of three meetings with the Toffees but Pellegrini believes that the games are not related to one another.

“The games are not related,” Manuel ruled.
“Everton maybe will be related to Crystal Palace as we will have less than 72 hours to recover the players. Those two games are more linked than the other games against Everton.

“Every game is different – we must try to beat Everton tomorrow, then we think about Crystal Palace. We don’t know if there will be the same players, the same performance – so much can change in 15 days.

“Everton has a style of play, they’re an attacking team under Roberto. They have players in a very good moment so we must be very careful with their counter attack. We must try to score more goals and do more damage to their defence but also be a balanced team.

“On a good day with a normal performance, it will be a tough game, but I think we can win.”

If Pellegrini can give Iheanacho enough game time then it is best that he stays with the team. Not 3 mins to the end of the game.

Made a mistake abt Segun Odegbami. Infact he retired after we failed to defend our AFCON title which was held in Ghana in 1982. This also followed d disappointment of nt qualifying for the 1982 WC.

However, Wole Odegbami featured at the 1988 AFCON. So westerhorf dropped him from his team ahead of Algiers '90.

Talking abt Aloy Agu's performance. In case u have forhgotten let me remind u of the results of our matches.

Algeria 5-1 Nigeria.
Nigeria 1-0 Egypt
Nigeria 1-0 Ivory Coast
Semis: Zambia 0-2 Nigeria
Final: Algeria 1-0 Nigeria.
We only conceded against Algeria.
If u recall the first game we were 1-0 down at half time. In an attempt to equalize we let our back open and Raba Maja did the havoc. Aloy Agu went on a three match stretch without conceding until d final when he could nt stop Medaj Jamel's 1st half super strike. I dnt know how Aloy Agu is Westerhof's inlaw. Peter Rufai refused to honour national team's invitation and Aloy Agu was next in line. Kst like what Enyeama is forming to Nigeria today.

Your are right about Wole Odegbami.
Prior to 90 Nations Cup, Peter Rufai was outstanding in 84 Nations Cup, he saved 3 out of 5 penalties against Ivory Coast but Onigbinde dropped him in the finals. What happened?

Westerhor can lie for..... he even lied that Etim Essin was a car dealer. Of course, he lied that Rufai refused invitation. If Rufai were at the goal post he would have saved us. What happened when he came back in 1994? You know now?

What proof do u have that Westerhof lied abt Rufai's refusal to honour unvitations. The then NFA officials confirmed that Peter Rufai was shying away from national team call up. Aloy Agu was in goal again at Senegal 1992. A cheap goal he conceded in that 3rd place play-off ended his national team career.Remember how he, Aloy Agu, crawled like a Lizard on the floor in other to punch a goal bound ball which finally became a goal? Peter Rufai hu had been sidelined was call up for the 1994 WC qualifiers. Nobody was saying Peter Rufai was nt better than Aloy Agu. The case may b similar to what we have now where Enyeama has dumped Nigeria and we had to field Carl Ikeme. We know Enyeama is better bt Carl is the one hu is available.

Rufai's best tourney was Maroc '88, beaten in that final from a spot kick by Emmanuel Kunde of Cameroun.

By 1994 Peter Rufai was already becoming a shadow of his old self. His reflexes had become poor as he was always beaten from close range.

Recall the 94 AFCON semi-final 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast? Recall both goals for CIV was scored by one player: Mitchelle Basole. Recall he really exploited this Rufai's weakness to score d 2goals.
Again in the final against Zambia Elijah Litana hu scored Zambia's only goal scored from a close range header following a corner kick.

By 1998 the coach then was going to get rid of Rufai bt a pre-World cup friendly against Holland terminated Abiodun Baruwa, the then first choice goalie's, WC dreams. Holland won 5-1! And Baruwa was virtually escorting the balls into d net. I can't forget that rainy night in my neighbourhood. grin
Rufai was called back to d squad bt had a disastrous tournament.

I quite agree that prio to d emergence of Enyeama, Rufai was our greatest. His Maroc '88 heroics got into his head and he started avoiding national team call ups.

Is Ifeanyi Matthew the creative juice Nigeria have been missing?

Ifeanyi Matthew has so far been the revelation of the CHAN Eagles in South Africa

by Samm Audu
Ifeanyi Matthew was the biggest revelation at Nigeria’s training camp in South Africa and if he could extend such form at the 2016 CHAN in Rwanda, the country could well have unearthed the creative midfielder they have desperately longed for since the days of Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha.

On Monday, he was not only the match winner in a warm-up win over Cote d’Ivoire, but also the standout performer as the Eagles finalise their preparations for the bi-ennial tournament, which begins in Kigali on Saturday.

Kano-born Matthew will celebrate his 19th birthday in Rwanda and he is also poised to mark his emergence as a full international in the country of a thousand hills.

“He has been one of the best players during our training camp. He has a great mentality and he is ever willing to work both in training and matches without any complaints,” praised former Nigeria and Ajax Amsterdam winger Tijjani Babangida, who is one of the officials with the Eagles in Pretoria.

“Should he continue working hard, there is no reason he will not establish himself in the main Eagles.”

The midfielder is versatile and so could play as a defensive or attacking player. He has great technique, a good passer of the ball armed with top-class vision and packs a good shot from distance.

He has already represented Nigeria at U17 and U20 levels.
Last year, he was the driving force as Nigeria won a seventh African Youth Championship in Senegal, scoring three goals and providing several assists.

However, a foot injury suffered in the Flying Eagles U20 World Cup game against Brazil will prematurely cut short a tournament where he was expected to emerge as one of the top stars.

Ifeanyi Matthew is not short of admirers.
Two years ago, Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba predicted the midfielder will be one of the players from his team who will go all the way to establish himself in the Super Eagles.

Eagles assistant coach Salisu Yusuf gave Matthew his first break in the Nigeria premier league in 2014.

“Ifeanyi’s through ball is as good as half a goal, if not a goal,” remarked an impressed Yusuf.

The player has also interested several foreign clubs and back home in the Nigeria league, he has sparked off a big chase involving El Kanemi, Kano Pillars and Enugu Rangers ahead of the new season next month.

The CHAN is a big shop window for Ifeanyi Matthew to showcase his undoubted class and should he do just that, the gates could well be opened for a most cherished move to Europe.

Profile:
Date of Birth: 20th January, 1997
Height: 1.73m

Position: Midfielder
Club: El Kanemi Warriors

We all know that all players must rise and fall and Rufai is not an exception. Fine, he was not there in 1994 but he was still the best we had at that moment and he did saved us in the penalty shoot out against the same Ivory Coast. However, you should also remember he had sight issue at that time hence he was very bad at aerial ball.

The death of this young player brought back the memories of how late Samuel Okwaraji slumped and died before home crowd. Angwe, 29, a striker with Julius Berger in 1995 also collapsed just with one minute before the end of an African Cup Winners’ Cup semi final match with Maxaquene of Mozambique at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos.
After he slumped, Angwe waved off playmates saying he would be fine but doctors at the stadium were unable to revive him. Doctors also confirmed Angwe to have died of a heart attack.

Yeah na so o. Die hard things . I never miss our national team matches even till date. Whether we play well or nt i jst keep watching. It was one of those our end of semester breaks so i really had time for that France '98 including d pre-world cup friendlies. grin
And u remember that 3-0 thrashing by Yugoslavia too. Abiodun Baruwa was a calamity. I think he went into d records as d worst ever Eagles goalie.

Those guys were ballers.
old man grin

It's nice going down memory lane and all....but I believe this is part of derailing of the thread.

Someone can create a memory lane thread and y'all can post there or something, but this is the U23 thread....not even SE thread

My sister no vex. Na talk dey lead to talk. The discussion started with argument abt whether Kelechi Nwakali and Azubuike Okechukwu would be able to replicate JJ Okocha's midfield prowess. And the discussion took us to the early 90s.

Sorry, if that bored you. But we couldn't help it.

So tell us what's new with the U23 players lets put the discussion back on rail. smiley
