It is appalling but it is an open secret that our economy is built on policies generated by people who have certificates with little or no professional knowledge or common sense.

To even work as a nanny in Nigeria, you need a certificate. Some local canteens require that sales boy/girl have at-least O'level which is rather preposterous.

God help Nigeria.

I graduated with the least of grades "PASS" from one of the federal universities, not because i was a numskull but because i did not join the band wagon of the "sorters". More so i was financially inept which resulted in missing some exams, but after 4 years the war was over. With my kind of grade the future was deem for me with no hope. I took some computer programming courses to add to my CV i thought it would be of help. Alas four years on no single interview, i was roaming the streets without hope

God finally answered my call and i travel to the united states for greener pastures, i enrolled for a six months IT course and after completion i received my first phone interview from one of the telecom company and later on skype interview. after three days i was called for a one on one interview at their corporate office. It was straight forward with three interviewers, they asked about my skills and what i could do , which i told them with great confidence. A system was brought in and i was asked to configure bla bla bla which i did. To my amazement none asked a question pertaining my degree what they where hammering on was on the job.

After completion i was given the job instantly to resume the following Monday with a well furnished office and a very good pay. Right Now i am the manager of my team of which i developed a standard software for the company that remains number one.

My point is why is Nigeria hell bent on class of degree rather what the individual has to offer. There are lots of talented 3rd class and pass job seekers out there if given a chance will perform far better. I think this is also one of the bane that is making the Nigerian economy a far cry, it hurts seeing the lower class graduates not given a chance. I weep for Nigeria. I recently sent my resume to one of the Nigerian job boards just to test if i will be contacted but no call as usual maybe because of my lower degree grin . Nigeria has a very long way to go, even the oyibos that taught us the system isn't even using it its just so annoying.

For all those with a lower degree believe in yourself, a paper should not define your worth but rather look inward and surely you will conquer.

Pardon my English and thanks for reading

Congrats. Thank God for you. 3rd class is a career death sentence in Nigeria. Thank God you had the opportunity of travelling outside. That just changed the whole thing.

Nice write-up OP.
Well, your assertion may not be so true about the class of degree discrimination.
I've applied to more than 500 jobs online with a CV always restructured, well-furnished and updated. Ye, no single invite.I've even veered off my field into some areas I consider can boost one's chances but dear, the same issue keep coming up.
To add up, I have a diploma in computer engineering, learnt HTML/JavaScript/CSS programming, HPLC/GC-MS/AAS analytical methods, and possess a first class degree.
Feb.14th will make it 2 years I did my POP,still in my parent's House.
So, my dear, God blessed you at the appointed time.

shocked . All this certification .

This country is f<ckingly messed up. Imagine graduating with first cl ass and no job. And it is not oLadnly you oooo. There are many of them out there. I have a c-ousin with just secondary education that after struggling for years at Ladipo market Lagos with nothing to show for it later got the opportunity of travelling to UK where he continued his business. Just few years there, the guy was able to build a house in the village,in Lagos and bought lands in PortHarcourt and also cruises sweet ride anytime he comes back.

Re: Nigeria And Her First And Second Class Job Syndrome by sinistermind(m): 12:32pm On Feb 12, 2016
My Brother, that's the clear difference between foreign firms and Nigerian controlled firms. Too much emphasis on class of degree. Most 2.2 n third class students can get jobs done better than first class students. The Nigerian educational system n curriculum encourages "la cram la pour". So students are mostly keen on studying to pass instead of studying to know as well as pass.

OP,

There may be a point you are missing. Unlike in the USA, the jobs here are few.

Now put yourself in the shoes of recruiters, if you advertise for a position and you get applications from 10, 000, what would you do? Would you give all of them a chance to show what they can do?

Your class of degree is a problem but thats not all, it is more important for you to understand that the ratio of job-seekers to available jobs is a very big one.

In westernized countries, certification is also equally important but not the only criteria (but this applies to Nigeria as well, with interviews/assessment centers added to the recruitment process).

The issue with Nigeria is there simply is not enough jobs for the ridiculous rates of graduates produced year in year out. Ask those who grew up in the 60s/70s about job hunting....you will hear a different story.

It has always been about "what you can offer" rather than certification. The issue lies in the fact that there are too many applicants (more people are attending higher education), which makes it quite costly for companies to host recruitment exercises for all graduates. Even over here in the U.K, over the last 20 years more and more companies are increasing minimum grade requirements from a 2:2 to 2:1 due to the costs of recruitment.

Just like one of us mentioned, the Nigerian job market is not saturated at all. You have majority of the jobs concentrated in just a part of the country. HRs become choosy even when you possess the needed skills and/or experience...

I keep saying it, Education is important. But one doesn't need education to make it in Nigeria, or any part of the world. Just work hard and chase that dream of yours.
my dear, i guessed u meant to say 'academic education' cos u can not succed in life without education. You have to be educated in what ever thing u want to venture into. Going to school I would say is not a guarantee to success but education is.

my bro, i graduated with a pass in my HND for four good reasons
1. i sponsored myself by working as a system engineer in the school and outside in ilorin cos' then my dad had stroke which later killed him.
2. I was in the SUG of my school as i hate all manner of cheating.
3. In my final year I was trying to do a new project when my course-mates were busy copying old project.
4. i was more hardware inclined than software.

I work where i served and till now i have being dusting all the degree and 2/2, 2/1 graders. Am still the best both soft and hardware.
So the grade you get out of school is never a reflection of your capacity/capability.
A billionaire was once invited to the graduation ceremony of a College in the US and said the following to the Staff of the school.
"take care of the first class students cos' they are your future colleagues, the 2/1 cos' they are the wall street gurus of the future, the 2/2 cos' they are the future bureaucrats and the 3rd class cos' they are the future tycoons and board room gurus".

Go start Jamb coaching in your room.
Personally handle the subjects covered in your course.
Let your prospective students know you have a 1st class.
They will beat a path to your place.

Don't advise this guy he is a sitting duck, 12 years waiting for somebody to employ him, if he eventually get the job and his employer sack him for one reason or the other, will he go into another 12 years sabbatical or hibernation?.
