Hello guys
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by NOHWEAH(m): 3:28pm On Feb 26, 2016
Hello guys, I'm so thankful to u all for all ur info, especially Robinski15. Now lemme share my story;
My Dad started a big farm in 2001 consisting of catfish fish farming, poultry and crop production. He failed in catfish farming due to his inability to hatch successfully (we tried so many times but failed). And it wasn't easy 2 get good seed back then, so we abandoned the hatchery.
I was very fortunate to do my NYSC in a place where I could learn about fry hatching and management in full. During this period, I also stumbled onto this awesome thread.
After I finished NYSC in 2015 I came back home and repaired like 1/8 of the hatchery facility on ground nd started hatching. My folks where so suprised at my success.
My brother also got 2 know bout ds thread and he stocked 4000 pieces of my 1st juvenile sale.
Now, I've started juvenile production on a large scale; thanks to all ur info.
I currently have about 45,000 PIECES of fingerlings due 4 sale as juvenile in d next 2-3 weeks (still using just 1/4 of the hatchery facility)
I'm also using this medium 2 advertise.
OUR FARM IS LOCATED AT OGBOMOSO-IRESAAPA (JEJAMA FARMS)
My JUVENILE goes for - 17 NAIRA (I only sell Juvenile due 2 some reasons)

Criticism is allowed, work so far, filling the holes with granite, sand and cement to be able to withstand water. Am also thinking of washing my ponds with lime and then fertilizing with cow dungs for 3days. Any objection?

Gud day sir. I am an ardent follower of this catfish thread on nairaland.
I have a challenge which I need ur input. I have completed arrangement to start my fish farm in concrete ponds. A mason, who came highly recommended by a reputable fish farmer in my area, constructed the ponds for me.
However, after construction (together with plastering and all) I noticed cracks forming on the walls of the ponds. I sought advise and I was told to reinforce the pond by cracking them open in strategic places and casting concrete pillars with iron rods into them. I have completed this reinforcement too at a great cost. However, I noted that the cracks appeared again soon after I finished the reinforcement. I tried filling the ponds with water but they dried out by the next day.
Obviously I can't use the ponds like that. I am so discouraged.

I spoke to u sometime ago about buying ur fingerlings as soon as my pond is ready. Now I can't do that.

I am considering the option of fabricating tarpaulin ponds and placing them inside the concrete ponds.
How feasible do u think this option will be?
Will it have any side effects?
What other (cheaper) option is open to me?

We are talking of 6 ponds of 7ft by 14ft each.
Pls reply. It will be appreciated.

Sorry about your experience but is one of those things we face in this business, but note that winners dont quit, as you are almost there. If the cracks are on the wall, all you need to do now is to engage someone who can screed the wall with raw cement and screeding gum/paint, leave for sometime and ensure that the angles are double coated to form a thick layer and you are good to go. Where is your location, can you post the pics for us to see

thanks for ur advice.
However, I don't wanna waste more money on something that may not work. This ur suggestion seems so logical and correct. But Are u 100% sure that this solution will work? Cos The way I see the persistent cracks, it seems to me to be a foundation issue.
screeding and all is not cheap. Pls are u really sure it is the best way to go?
