Teepompey: I usually make use of 40% fishmeal as a starter before the increase but I have changed to 30%. Again, any subsequent feeds after the starter, I use 50KG fishmeal on 300KG but i ensure there is enough toasted soya 2 Likes 1 Share |

Good morning all, My fingerlings are about to the introduced to the pond (earthen pond). Please I have some questions; 1) How often should I change the water? 2) How often should I treat them (e.g Multivitamins and tetracycline)? 3) What will the feeding look like for 2000. fingerlings? Like how much would one spend onan average to feed them adequately to maturity? 4) Do I still need to sort? Since its a big earten pond. I attached a screen shot of the proposed pond. Thank you in advance for your help. God bless you. N/B: Please if u r a fish farmer in abuja, I would love to come and learn from you. Please, drop your contact so that I can reach u. 1 Like

Ttalk: You can replace the imported fish meal 100% with clupeid fish (I think it's Yoruba call it yoyo) I read a scientific research comparing 72% imported fish meal from Holland to local clupeid, conclusion, no difference. So don't waste your money please. Will find a link to the research and post. I used to believe solely in imported 72%,but the high cost and research changed my mind |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by Ttalk: 9:48am On Mar 17, 2016 |
ab1x: My Boss, i respect your contribution and your formula that i've been using is doing wonder. The only different is that i replaced foreign fishmeal with clupeid [yoyo]and the result have been tremendous. However, i think it can be better with foreign fishmeal that is why i wanted to give it a try but the cost of foreign fishmeal has not been encouraging. Having said that, am prepare to revert to my old formula but to add addictive to the formula to enhance the acceptability. What are those proven formulated addictive one can buy and mix to the composition of the feed apart from natural fish oil. Where can one get those addictive in Nigeria market. |

Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by ab1x: 12:57pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
bily: There is nothing wrong with clupeid fish. Alot of people use it to compliment fishmeal in their feed composition. It is protein level is not upto 72% (check with animal care). It is not as if you will not get result using that but you can't compare coke with pepsi ( with due respect to pepsi) |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by bily(m): 1:28pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
ab1x: What's the difference between 71.3% and 72%? Unfortunately I don't know where I kept the research document, I'm sure anyone can google it. In some cases, clupeid performed better and vice versa. Point is the difference is negligible. This is not about something wrong with clupeid or not, nor is it about complementing fish meal.. . it's about replacing imported fish meal 100% without any difference in output. When you talk of soya or chicken intestine etc, that's when you talk of complementing fish meal. The only issue wet may have with clupeid is that they are 2 major strains in Nigeria, one with 71. 33% and the other with 69% crude protein. But even the 72% imported fish meal is +or-. Analysis may actually give you about 70% give or take. As per coke and pepsie, all na sugarsugar difference Na marketing and brand/mind share. Non is actually better then the other 1 Like |

ab1x: Pls how can it be administer. At what percentage to 100kg. Do you suggest that it should be mix with other ingredient before pelletising? |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by bily(m): 2:16pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
Ttalk: I'm guessing you want an attractant to make the feed more attractive to the fish. Im thinking of using garlic as attractant when my fishes start taking pellets. I have not used it before, but I have read some stuffs about garlic used in fish lines to catch fish and it also has antibiotic properties |

Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by ab1x: 2:54pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
bily: No everything you read on the internet you should believe. I am in the field and I know whats up. You can't compare 72% fishmeal with clupeid Unless if the fish meal is fake. |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by bily(m): 3:15pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
ab1x: So you are the only one in the field and the only person that knows what's up. Congrats. It is cos of arguments like this, that prompted the research. I will check, cos I believe I also saw same research done here in Nigeria by institute of marine research and oceanography. There's no end to knowledge and we keep learning everyday. I'm sure those that took the time out to do the research know the difference between real and fake fish meal. Keep using your imported fish meal, this revelation does not take anything away from your success.. . Just trying to update the house on new info I came across. 1 Like |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by ab1x: 4:46pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
bily: I doubt if you've used both. Let me remind you that fish meal 72% current price is #850 per KG and Clupeidae current price is #550 per KG. There are two types of Clupeidae. One is white and the other one is gold. The gold type is better than the white. White has about 52% crude protein while the gold is around 60/62. Like I said earlier and I will say it again, fish meal 72% is better than Clupeidae anytime, any day. Unless of course if you buy fake fish meal and there is a lot of it in the market. If Clupeidae is better than fish meal, a lot of people will go for it as a cheap alternative instead of buying imported products. |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by bily(m): 5:34pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
ab1x: Most Nigerians do not listen/read to understand, rather they listen/read to respond. I never said clupeid is better or Superior to 72% crude protein, I said it can totally replace 72% without any difference in final output. The point is considering the price difference viz a viz the negligible difference in outcome, it makes more business sense to use clupeid to maximize profit. If you also read my previous submission, you would see when I mentioned I too was always of the opinion of its 72% fish meal or nothing else, especially considering I tried the imported 65% fish meal about 8 or 9years ago and did not like it, even the fishes did not respond to it well. But I can tell you clupeid is way better than the old 65% fish meal and I was suprised at the result, that's what even led me to do a search more info on it. like they say necessity is the mother of invention. Some are forced to reduce quantity of fish meal cos of price and supplement with soya meal, you even mentioned you reduced from 40kg to 30kg. Now imagine if you used clupeid of 40kg, you may actually get better result especially given the fact that research shows they are comparable in final output. I would appreciate if you can point me to where you you saw 52 and 60% crude protein for clupeid cos I see 68.5% and 71.3% I think the major purpose of this thread is for sharing and ultimately a community where fish farmers will come together with the ultimate goal of maximizing profit. No one is forcing anything on anybody. If I have not used something, I will say so, I mentioned garlic as attractant, but I stated I had not used it. 2 Likes |

bily: Anybody can come online to write whatever they like. Like I said earlier, if you want to determine the crude protein in it then you should check with animal care. A while ago, a feedmill in my location did an analysis of clupied and the result shows that crude protein is less than the fish meal. It is not as if fish will not grow if you use it but for better result you should go for fish meal. There are many ways to reduce cost but that is not the subject of the matter on ground |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by bily(m): 6:56pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
ab1x: Ok, please do tell Sir, is there any reason why I should accept animal care analysis and not Nigerian institute for fresh water fisheries research?

Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by ab1x: 7:12pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
bily: Thanks for the report. The analysis shows that fish meal has 72% crude protein while Clupeid fish meal has 70.6% crude protein. My take is that farmers can combine the two to get better result or better still combine fish meal 72% with local fish (Eja Gbigbe) to reduce the cost of feed production 1 Like |
Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by bily(m): 7:21pm On Mar 17, 2016 |
ab1x: Yes it's stated in the report that the best result was when the 2 was combined with the same ratio, but used individually, the difference i's negligible, hence does not justify the wide price margin, which BTW, has been my point all along. I'm sure someone would have gained something from the discuss. Peace 2 Likes |

Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by vickychuk(m): 8:51am On Mar 18, 2016 |
I think bily makes sense, considering most of our foreign counterparts use trash fish in production of a more desirable fish species.. its just like exploiting the ecological niche and food chain ... Most of the so called trash fish are the most prolific (multiply their numbers rapidly) and so can never be overfished or extinct. Have we ever thought of what fish species are used for making fish meal...? for all I care it could be our very own tilapia which they labeled as an invasive specie that needs to be curled from their water bodies . and we spend so much on what we have in abundance due to ignorance. Please we would be doing ourselves much good if we can try to research. Someone posted on this thread that he got great results from using frozen fish which is cheaper in comparison to fishmeal . We could carry out our own experiment... set 10 to 20 fingerlings aside ,feed 10 with frozen fish formula , the other 10 on trash fish formulated feed and the rest of your stock as control group can be fed on fish meal if you are a fan . then check the growth rate throughout the production cycle of 5 to 6 months. I'm sure we will benefit a lot from such. Thanks 2 Likes |
