Before My Boss Sacks Me, Should I Resign? by IYADARA(f): 10:14am On Mar 25, 2016
I have been enduring all manners of insult from my boss for over 2years now... But this time around, I don't think I can stand it any more

Just yesterday, he said to me *you are not adding any value to my firm* hummmmm I am seriously lost and confuse right now

I don't want to wait till he sacks me, I have no plan *b* and am thinking of dropping my resignation letter before he sacks me.

Please I need sincere advise on what to do,... If u have ever been there, what did u do?

I will appreciate ur response

Thanks........

How are you sure he will sack you? For you to be there for two years without sacking you means you have atleast a value you adding. Never mind his utterances, he may do that because he was annoyed with you at that moment or just a way to motivate you to do more. No one can tell.

I suggest you check yourself and find out what you are doing that makes him angry and try to adjust. Bosses are always right. Also if you are so tired of the place, apply elsewhere while you still manage there pending the time. Resigning without plan B is catastrophic except on few occasions where your determination favors you.

That kind of statement comes only from a very angry boss. If you are not the cause and sure you have been doing your best, I think its time to do the needful but you should have a plan B before that.

My Indian Boss told me this, when I got angry and told him that he was not having faith in my ability to deliver for the company in our Marketing section!! He told me this...

"It is better I rebuke you in your front and worship you in your absence than praise you in your presence and despise you in your absence"!!

You only need to prove to your boss that you are his best staff!!

We Nigerians are mentally lazy sometimes and it is only pressure that can wake us up!!

Don't resign because it will affect your CV!!

Prove to your boss that you are the best staff in your firm!!

Or

You want to tell me that your boss is correct about his opinion about you

My Love....

Pls don't ask him that... You have to figure it out by urself!!

Asking him will justify his claim about you!!

Even if he tells you, in his mind he will be like...( This girl doesn't know her Job)!!

You are paid to deliver, it is not a Graduate Trainee scheme!!

I beg you, don't ask him!!

What is your Job description, I might help you with Ideas!!

Wait and allow him take the step. You too need to handle the job as if its your own. Business owners are going through a lot in terms of low volume of transaction.

this happened to me 3weeks ago. mine is I received insults for a year, I was one of the longest serving staff as I endured the most insults; and when I mean insults I mean degrading insults that reduces your self esteem. salaries are also cut arbitrarily without reason and explanation. I can vividly remember one where my boss said if I didn't book her ticket right she will kill me. I left 3weeks ago without a PLAN B and my life has been bliss. determination will get me another place soonest but sometimes some MD will frustrate you and if you continue enduring without setting your own "red line" then you will be treated worse than a dog. my MD was abusing me her usual way and I just walked out and went home. period. sent my resignation letter the next day. not easy since then as I am still applying, but it is WORTH WORTH it.

I love your comment! Even the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence and the violent take it by force! You are the maker of ur own destiny, it becomes what you make of it and not what a boss somewhere says! You could also become a boss if you worked towards it! But when you do: try to be liberal, remember all you have gone through and seek to make it better contrary to popular belief that bosses should have to be uptight and mean...

@OP my sincere apologies! Your experience shows its how the cookie crumbles and some believe you should accept it as it's worse leaving without a plan B.

I want u to understand something before any job @all : ur life, health, state of mind is important! You must feel psychologically and emotionally well and balanced to be able to function in any organisation! I will not like to tell you what to do cos I feel you already have it in ur head as u know where the shoes pinch which you wear... no one else knows!

So u might need to really sit back and take time out to think deep about this! Please try and be bold; ur umblical cord is not tied to any organization. Just as ur expected to add value to them, they should also add value back to u, shouldn't have to be a one way traffic.

All the best with ur decision!

I am an architect ...he blames me for every little mistakes in all designs, even the one he commits, he will always ask me why I wud print designs with mistake, adesigns that someone else worked on, anytime he tells me to print and he sees mistake, the blame my brother still comes to me..... I am always the bad person,...... When client complains, even without asking who worked on the design, he assumes I am responsible,.......

He finds every little opportunity to insult me..... He makes me feel the salary he is paying me isn't worth my productivity.....

I understand your feelings. If i told you mine is worse than yours you wouldn't believe. Just learn to absorb those treatments for the time being and spread your tentacles in search for another job... Once you made up your mind those insults are temporary, they won't have effect on you again.

Now I will advise you on some things!!

1) Verify before printing: if after he designs and ask you to print, lookout for mistakes and don't be scared to notify him, even though you might be wrong @ times, don't be scared to point out possible mistakes!!

2) Stand your ground: if accidentally, an error occurs, and it is not ur fault, don't be scared to tell him in the face...."I am not responsible for that mistake"!!

3) Never be a "Yes sir" person!!

Constructively criticize every design, drawing and so on and so forth!!

It will make him see you in another light!!

NB: all these earned me the little thing I am today!!

Never be scared! Let the worse happen!!

My sister, RESIGN. You don't need a plan B to resign, except you don't know your worth. If the blame is heaped on you, everytime, even when you're not wrong, it's not worth it then working there. Its just means that you're not being appreciated. Walk out one day, and see if your boss won't want you back. As an architect, there are a thousand and one jobs out there waiting for you.

@OP

It's a sin for one to earn without giving equal and proportional service. So, if you are guilty as charged, either you resign honorably or beseech him to give you time to improve and mean it.

Now, having read through your subsequent responses, I have to conclude that the problem you have is what many other compatriots have too which is "servile attitude". Change from a servile staff to a loyal, self confident, self strongly willed and opinionated staff. Whenever you see any mistake, call your boss attention to it albeit humbly and air your opinion.

Resigning in this over saturated labour market? Though, your boss told you the blatant truth the hard way, all you need do is find out the actual place you need up your game. Leaving the job isn't the best step but making sure this flaw which your current boss has seen in you won't repeat itself elsewhere. We all have our flaws.
