Hi Yazz09, I have read your thread all through and I really appreciate that you are sharing your experience with us here. Unfortunately it seems there isn't any room on your whattsapp group anymore, as I am a snail farmer. I would have loved to be part of the group. I am currently having issues with my snails. I started in sept last year with 200 snails bought from a snail farmer and now I have just 163 and I fear I may keep loosing more. They aren't laying eggs either as the last time I saw eggs was last year October where I got about 12 eggs of which none hatched, so maybe I didn't incubate them well. Their mobility was also good as at last year up until December when harmattan came and since then they just cluster up together and they've been dying every other day. So I don't know if it's because of the weather that I am having these issues. I give them water as I know and have seen that they respond very well when water touches them. Their pens have cocoyam grown in them as well as some other plant for food and shade and I also give them feed formula but they have been rejecting that recently. They love plantain, pineapple and fruits in general, but it could be expensive having to be feeding them on this every other day as I have to buy from the market. It's really painful when I see a dead snail in the pen every other day! I really need your help with getting them back to tiptop shape and start laying eggs and to stop them from dying. Here are pictures of my snails and their pen. Your help and any other person's suggestion/advice will help. 1 Like

Urbangrow: It's really sad to hear that your snail farm is turning down south, but don't worry it will go up north again. First of all am not the admin of that whatsapp group, it's just some other guy that created it. That been said, regarding your snails. You have to know that snails are very picky when it comes to food. I mean they easily get bored with one kind of feed, so learn to change what you feed them if possible every other day. Secondly, the weather is very dry this time around. So I'll advice watering them twice everyday. Early morning and in the evening. Water the whole pen and make sure it touches all the snails. In you hatchery, water it twice a week to keep the place cool and I do hope you dig a shallow hole to bury the eggs. And place plantain leafs on top of the eggs, so the water won't affect the eggs. I do look forward to get a positive response once you take these steps. CHEERS. 1 Like |

@ Urbangrow, Sorry about your bad experience but I can tell you that all hope is not yet lost. I noticed some things that are not Ok with ur snail farm, which if corrected will set you on a growth path. I started my snail farm last year November with just 10 snails, presently I have over 300 snails and I was forced to expand the pens last month. If you can drop your phone number or other contact, I will get across to you to give you some tips. 1 Like |

Urbangrow: Despite the challenges you are facing now, I really love how you structured your pen. You can include sweet potatoes as plants. As @yazz09 suggested, change their feeds often and water them properly. They will bounce back. 1 Like |

So far I haven't recorded any mortalities and I am definitely keeping them hydrated.i have covered up the whole pen to ensure the soil in the pen remains moist and they have a dark environment. They r still under strict monitoring!!! Thanks to everyone who responded to my problem, very much appreciated. 1 Like |

Re: Snail Farm Begins - The Birth Of A Farm by yazz09(m): 10:27am On Apr 01, 2016 |
iNanaAma: I'll advise you use wood. cause the snails eat the wood and mucus that grows in the wood, also plastic is chemical which is not good for the snails. don't make the hatchery airtight, the eggs needs to breath. I've replied your mail. |
