Reading this was quite worth it! Quite affirmative of the fact that it takes a responsible owner to raise a responsible dog. Nice one, man!

I'll advise you ignore those comments. Some are even saying "I hate dogs". So why did you click on the topic? From the post title, its obvious its intended for dog lovers/owners, yet people would rather use the opportunity to display their poor mentality. Its just shameful to see how low our reading culture keeps sinking in Nigeria.
Anyway, i have a question pls. How do you correct a 2yr old lhasa when he misbehaves while walking him in public?

Hello mitchyy.

It depends on the particular (mis)behaviour you are trying to correct, though at 2 years old that might be more of a challenge considering the fact that he would have already become set in his ways.

Perhaps you should state exactly what it is he does which you are trying to correct and we will see if and how something can be done about it.

Lordregalia, ur posts are interesting and educating. I love dogs and I would love to own some in the nearest future.

We had a German Shepherd; Frisky was her name. My mom bought her in 2004 and it died in 2011. Very lovely, intelligent and cunny and very obedient too (except the times she had pups, she would be aggressive and very protective of her pups until after some few weeks and we would we start giving them milk to support her breast milk).

She seems to know intents of people's heart cos she was Demola's best buddy and Yinka's sworn enemy (Yinka and Demola are siblings and they are our neighbour). Honestly, I have no explanation for this. Maybe u can help me out cheesy

But we had a serious challenge; that is training and stopping her from pooing anywhere the thing caught her. Though she wouldn't poo inside the house, but chaiiiiii, na our compound space suffer am. Part of my morning chores was packing her poos grin

I want to know if this can be dealt with. (I notice that our local dogs here don't just poo anywhere, cos we have one now; Silva.) I wish to know how u deal with this pooing of a thing. Are your boerboels trained to poo in a specific place? What if you take them for a walk or one of them is with u in the car and wants to poo, what happens?

Thank you

MaziOmenuko:
Read this first at shadow's diary and I was like...wow! Had to read it again today and it still made an interesting read.
Never knew a dog could be trained to walk without leach until I witnessed it firsthand at Osbourne estate, ikoyi. That mighty GSD, walking beside the owner always amazes me each time I see it. People just can't help but get intimidated into crossing the other side of the road each time he's approaching, while those conversant with the estate walk past it in the same direction and the dog just walks unperturbed.
Good one op, I still don't think I can achieve such when I finally get a dog.

Hello MaziOmenuko,

You are quite right, it is always a pretty amazing sight to behold. Never once did I think that I would be one of those who could walk their dogs offleash until I was faced with that problem.

From my own experience I believe you can achieve almost anything possible with your dog if you set your mind to it.

Hello bellyjean.

I am glad you find my posts interesting.

It is true that dogs have an uncanny ability to understand more about people than meets the eye. Long before I got my first boerboel, I read in so many articles that boerboels in particular seem to have a sixth sense and are able to read people's feelings and intentions quite accurately. The unsaid things that my dogs pick up on always amaze me and I cannot explain it.

Cleaning up after your dog is a necessary evil every dog owner must be prepared to face. The flip side of not doing so is........well, better left unsaid.

Yes dogs can be trained to do their business in a specific place and yes my dogs are trained to do so in a specific place. It requires time and patience on your part. However, this training is best achieved when the dog is still a wee pup. You would need to study your dog's pooing habits (time intervals in relation to feeding schedules, tell-tales signs of when they need to go, etc) and take / direct your dog to the specific place you want him / her to do it whenever they feel the need to go. You would also need to have a confinement space or crate to place the dog during the times when you would not be available to supervise and monitor it, although this is only needed during the training period. If you take note of all these and make a routine of the practice, soon your dog would be doing it's business only in that specific designated area, even in your absence.

Because I understand my dogs pooing habits and I keep to a regular feeding schedule, they know to do their business before we go out on walks or out in the car and so I rarely have that problem of them doing it in the car and so on. In any case, even if they felt the need to go while in the car, because of their training and the force of habit, they hold it in until whenever we get home.

Hey lord regalia. How about you tell me how to make my dog madly wicked instead....she's a boer/shepherd mix, three years old, only barks when she feels like, and very playful, infact na everybody be her friend. Is there anything i can give her to make her **viciously ferociously aggressive??

Hello callmemuzby.

First of all, it depends on the age of your dog. You cannot always expect a pup or some dogs under the age of one or two years old to show aggression or signs of it.

i could tell you a couple of things to make your dog aggressive but I will not. Your goal should not be how to make your dog aggressive or you may find out the hard way that an aggressive dog is a very expensive liability. Rather your ultimate goal should be getting your dog to love, respect and trust you totally at all times. If you can achieve this, trust me, when the time is right and the situation presents itself, that dog would give it's life to protecting you, your's or your territory, come what may.

Hello Gabby91.

What can I say? I am happy to have inspired you to finally cross over into NL. Like you, I was a lurker for quite some time until barely two months ago when i decided to make the jump.

Congratulations on your L'hasa pup. And more so for the fact that he suits your temperament. That alone is a challenge and you are pretty lucky in that regard. Here's hoping both you and your dog discover that joy and bond only pet owners can possibly understand.

Thanks smiley

Boerbels are aggressive creatures like their rotie cousins, its always advisable to have your dog on a leash when strolling out of your home.

There are so many things out there that can cause distraction, irritation and ultimately lead to aggression from your dog on people.

With a leash you can control sudden movements by your dog in attacking people , without it your on your own.

Lets say someone decides to play a prank using an ultrasonic whistle on your dog, that little device irritates dogs, you can hear it but she can.

Your dog will trace the source and maybe attack the whistler, what will you do, you will held responsible cos she wasnt on a leash.

this is naija not SA. cool

Hello tivta.

Really sorry about the loss of your dogs. But sometimes it may not always be due to poison and wicked neighbours as I have come to realize. It takes eternal vigilance on the part of owners to observe their dogs for often insignificant signs of underlying serious health issues to save the life of a dog.

I think you should take a leap of faith and get another dog. Hopefully you would get it all right this time and it would live to a ripe old age. Truly awesome creatures they are.
I understand you bro, unfortunately as it is right now I won't have the time to constantly monitor them, hopefully when I have more free time I will try and get dogs again, they are truly man's best friend.

Hello kaeforum.

Point of correction; boerboels are not aggressive, they are protective. There is a difference.

A true boerboel's first instinct in a threatening situation is not to attack but to deter. Attacking is the last resort and would be sustained until the threat is neutralized.

A true boerboel never strays far from it's owner no matter what is going on around them.

And lastly, dog whistles are mainly used for training dogs and behaviour modification, but thinking about your illustration, only a suicidal person would play a dog whistle prank on an offleash dog.

I strongly disagree. If he doesn't know what's killing his dogs, he should stop getting dogs until he figures out what's going on.
