There are so many ways to minimize conflicts points and reduce congestion than flyovers (overpasses). Upon all the flyovers in Lagos state, we all can see how much traffic there is. The question is if Nigerian states want to borrow a leaf from U.S States that are currently suffering uncontrolles urbanization and sprawl as well as financial challenges maintaining their extensive road i nfrastructure or go the EU route were or go the EU route and fund sustainable mass transit and controlled urban development. The good thing abt our situation is that we are not yet so developed so we can make the right choice. I for one support only mass transit which is a more sustainable system. A city can function well even without flyovers. Think London underground, and EU trains, Tokyo bullet trains etc.

Mass transit buses require wider roads and with population growth, its just a matter of time that the buses will face the same issues with cars. Besides mass transit is a choice that cannot be forced.

Subways are very very expensive and needs electricity and very good maintenance culture which we lack all.

Lastly, flyovers. This will expand roads and remove conflicts however, it comes with a big sacrifice as it requires space. Even New york city gets damning traffic hold ups, the challenge is space for flyovers.

The problem with Lagos is the total lack of upgrade of roads or development of new ones and absence of alternative transport compared with cities in the US. How old is 3rd mainland bridge and is the capacity adequate? At both ends of the bridge, are there intersections? What has been done about them? But you cant downplay the need for flyovers, there is no other way to solve intersections better than flyovers.

Personally I don't see the big deal in building flyovers, but in any case, Ogun is currently building 15 of those simultaneously (and recently commissioned about 6 of 'em) without making much noise about it so 'kini big-deal'??

http://tribuneonlineng.com/ogun-to-complete-16-ongoing-road-projects-15-flyovers-in-2016

Leave 'em!

As usual, Nigerians hard at war, grimly dueling over the myriad prosaic inanities of a sane society's package for its people instead of dealing with the hard questions and causes predicating their country's continual backwardness and torpor.

And check out the supposed billions of taxpayers money underwriting these projects and the highhanded exclusive selection processes for awarding these jobs to complicit chop&clean contractor cronies.

Please include Plateau state as a state with flyover.
In the case of Edo state,I am sincerely disappointed. For the past 8 years of this present administration even an uncompleted flyover can not be seen anywhere.
It was voted in because it promised the people of modernization of the ancient city.

[quote author=chinology post=44433837]Anything your Imo state do not have is never ideal. Is your useless and worthless Imo state better planned than states with flyovers? You are only bitter because your state is yet to have a single flyover in 2016. I know it'yours really frustrating, old man.. cheesy

Man your attack was too direct. You should have just made ur point without appearing bitter. I agree with him. Flyover are not for beautification but ease of traffic, something u do not see in well laid out and planned cities. They cost money, occupy space and with time will need much maintenance and may cause erosion. Your may also attack me.

Your opinion does not matter in this case. Major advanced cities in the world like New York, London, Beijing etc has flyovers as it's major landmarks infrastructures. So take your thoughts to your house because it doesn't hold water.

Imo state does not have a single flyover in 2016. #FACT! And that is your pain and frustration! LOL

Stop fooling around old man.. cool

I agree with you but those cities became developed by going through 'steps of development' such as provision of water, electricity, good roads, and rest. The flyover came to relieve the congestive aspects. It makes no sense to build flyover where there ought to be none, especially if the most basic things are lacking. That is false development just to steal money and blame fall in oil price.

Abagworo:
Flyover is no sign of development but evidence of unplanned urbanization. If there is a way to avoid construction of flyovers it remains a better option to save funds. This is with exception to rail overpasses or highway intersections.

Almost all States in Nigeria have flyovers or overpasses built by FG. Maybe you mean the ones built by individual States.
Two mushroom flyovers at CFC junction and Rumuola re the structures FG decided to build for Rivers State. When you compare the overhead bridges scattered at Yaba, Maryland, Ebutte Metta, Apapa, CMS and other places in Lagos. You can only but shake your head. Spiff and later part Amaechi constructed decent flyovers.
