so in the spirit of giving back, here is what I have to share cheesy

WHAT ARE BENEFITS OF EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA?

1.Allows you to rest if your labor is prolonged. By reducing the discomfort of childbirth, some woman has a more positive birth experience.

2. Normally, an epidural will allow you to remain alert and be an active participant in your birth.

3. If you deliver by cesarean, an epidural anesthesia will allow you to stay awake and also provide effective pain relief during recovery.

4.When other types of coping mechanisms are no longer helping, an epidural can help you deal with exhaustion, irritability, and fatigue.

5. An epidural can allow you to rest, relax, get focused, and give you the strength to move forward as an active participant in your birth experience.

Please note, the use of epidural anesthesia during childbirth is continually being refined, and much of its success depends on the skill with which it is administered

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA?

1. Epidurals may cause your blood pressure to suddenly drop. For this reason, your blood pressure will be routinely checked to help ensure an adequate blood flow to your baby. If there is a sudden drop in blood pressure, you may need to be treated with IV fluids, medications, and oxygen.

2. You may experience a severe headache caused by leakage of spinal fluid.

3. After your epidural is placed, you will need to alternate sides while lying in bed and have continuous monitoring for changes in fetal heart rate. Lying in one position can sometimes cause labor to slow down or stop.

4. You might experience the following side effects: shivering, ringing of the ears, backache, soreness where the needle is inserted, nausea, or difficulty urinating.

5. You might find that your epidural makes pushing more difficult and additional medications or interventions may be needed such forceps or cesarean.

6. For a few hours after the birth the lower half of your body may feel numb. Numbness will require you to walk with assistance.

7. In rare instances, permanent nerve damage may result in the area where the catheter was inserted.

8. Though research is somewhat ambiguous, most studies suggest that some babies will have trouble “latching on” causing breastfeeding difficulties.

9. Other studies suggest that a baby might experience respiratory depression, fetal Mal-positioning, and an increase in fetal heart rate variability, thus increasing the need for forceps, vacuum, cesarean deliveries.

Good evening, mummies n daddies. I have read thru from Page 1-4, hence need assistance. Pls I need an hospital in Houston that does VBAC. I opted for Houston so that i don't v too many connecting flights as ds is my 1st time n I'm going wt my toddler. Saw some hsptls dat were stated n when I got in touch they said, they don't. Pls kindly assist.
Thanks all for the info posted so far, it really helped me. God bless.

Thanks @kemmytino. Wld get in touch

I think it's more important to find a doctor willing to handle a vbac. The hospital takes care of you for the duration of time that the doctor prescribes so in the absence of complications a vbac candidate is treated by the hospital in the same way as any Vaginal birth.

1st time post here... your search would be best done for doctors, not hospitals...
cos there are hundreds of doctors performing that procedure in Houston.... Not used any, just do a search via internet for ob/gyns affiliated to the hospitals you wanna use.

Can't put names here for obvious reasons... (Not used any...just been following this thread and it's been quite informative)

Best of luck

Delta has used me o... and the annoying part is that I lost the "voucher" abi "ticket" and so could nt request for refund. I've learnt now that it is airline dependent and probably where you buy from. I bought from Houston airport

Got a quote from Dr Lawrence S.Pierce of Mckinney Ob-Gyn for Obstetric care VD- $3,100, CS- $3,650.
Assistant Surgeon- $500

This is all the info they sent to me. They indicated that this does not reflect hospital charges.

So I responded asking for hospitals he is affliated with so I can contact them for cost bla bla bla but they are yet to respond.

Is this a fair cost? I also asked if this is inclusive of lab, anesthesia and pediatrician(I hope I am not asking for too much) but still awaiting the respond.

Any advice on this so far pls?

Pls can someone answer my questions and help pls

Maybe I have to get there b4 I can contact the uber ppl, av downloaded the app, but finding it difficult to use.

Are u in Lagos or Abuja? Uber works in both places so you can try it out here first

However it's not a big deal at all

The only snag about using it from the airport will be how will the driver call you? I'm not sure they call international numbers so u may need to use a local no to activate it first

That's what happened in my case. The app kept telling me to verify my no and dint send a code until I used a USA no

@olokings I'm presently in the US for another 4 weeks. My son is being breastfed and I mentioned that latching was a nightmare for both of us(you wouldn't know cos you are a man). He feeds and sleeps soundly now that he has his tongue tie released. I'm aware it is free in Nigeria but I would have willingly paid $1,000 for both of us to get respite. He wasn't getting enough milk and my boobs were getting very cracked and painful. I'm glad I did it here and wouldn't change that for nothing. My child's comfort is way more important than cutting costs

I guess it's one of those things like circumcision too. It's up to the parents to decide if to do it there or wait till they get home

Uncle umersijjad, if you don't have enough money to give birth in the us, it's not a do or die, give birth in naija. Your wife is not a citizen, hence she is not entitled to use medical aid of any form.( my two cents)
UmerSajjad:
Hello Everyone,

I am looking for an expert opinion so please all senior members try to chime in and advise me according to your knowledge and/or experience. Me and wife are in US on B1/B2 visa and will delivery baby here. My inquiry is

1. There is a government health care program that cover Mom and baby, it goes by the name of CoverKids. If I avail this insurance /financial assistance, does Medicaid/other health care programs are connected to Immigration system?

2. How Immigration department would come to know if my wife has availed this option?

3. Do they just check the payment receipts while exiting the country and who ever is not able to produce the payment receipts they mark her as "blacklisted" i.e used these healthcare assistance?

4. Medicaid/Coverkids systems are connected with Immigration and with passport number they will be able to pull up the details of medical assistance used?

5. At the time of Visa renewal, can we face any complication?

6. Do we need to notify the relevant US embassy that though our visa is B1/B2 but we have to do the baby delivery in US.

Thanks in advance !!

Hello Nairalanders,

I am impressed by the wealth of Knowledge shared on this site. May God bless you all.

I had my B1/B2 Visa in March last year and i travelled to the US for a conference and vacation in June-July (3 weeks) . during the interview, i was asked if i was pregnant and i said no, cos the last thing on my mind was a baby. fast forward to April 2016 and i'm a few week preggers with the plan of returning to the US to birth my child. I"m however worried about the POE which by the way is Baltimore (BWI) as i wasnt pregnant when i was granted the visa.

Kindly advise me on the right step(s) to take.

Thank you.

Lol so I went to
Alaska in February( I wasn't showing at all) to gather burden of proof. So it turns out the hospital takes VD- 2000 ( it was 16000 but you get 85% discount for paying self pay and an additional 20% if you pay before delivery)
The 2000 includes Epidural and all medications
Pediatrician 300. Doctor - 5000 ( the one I chose) NICU -497 Total- 7,800
It's on the high side but that's where I have family. Plus my relative promised to buy all baby things I would want. She already got the car seat, sterilizer, warmer, bottles, clothes etc.
PS: I had to go with all tests and scans to see the doctor. He asked me to bring some specific tests when I come for delivery and he promised a free scan before delivery.
That's the story o! If you no get family for Alaska don't bother coming lol

choi! I no do o!

Seems you will be having a summer baby. Thank God for that. How did you manage Alaska cold in Feb. ?

Thanks for the tongue tie enlightenment and with what I am seeing here, it looks like its quite common (and scary).

But Olokings didnt say what you did was wrong o, he just shared his experience and highlighted that it can also be done here, for other mamas who may face the same problem or may not be able to afford it at that particular point in time. It's like circumcision or ear piercing. Some people rather get it done when they get back home, you get?

After delivery, my hubby bought it in Naija at their Ikoyi office and it cost 10% of the price of my new York to Lagos ticket... not 10% of the return ticket price but 10% only of the New York to Lagos part of the trip.
