Interview at the abuja consulate 9.00am
Prayed and studied all night at my hotel
They started calling the appointment dates, my interview was for 9:00am ,when I entered the hall , 4 active cubicle, 6,7,8,9. Lots of refusals, nobody was smiling, the elderly man at 6 gave very a few tho, I had calculated I could fall into of those ladies ,started praying inside because people with almost same profile with me were refused, Was eventually called to cubicle 3, a pretty asian.a young lady ,in an enclosed office with two chairs
Vo: good morning
Me : good morning
Me :Can I seat?
Vo? Sure, pls pass your passport
Me, passed my receipt inclusive
Vo: Just your passport and ds 160 with a heavenly smile
Vo:why you going to texas
Me : To attend xyz conference
Vo: Why must you attend?
Me: Am the DPA(designated person ashore ) for my company
VO: That smile again, what do you do
Me: Am a x engr for an IOC, and I do so so and so
Vo: Tell me about how to stop gas flaring
Me: Explained with so many engineering terms
Vo:wow, you were refused in 2014
Me: Yes, was decided to give the us a break and focus on my career
Vo : how much do you earn
Me: 6 digits
Looks at a paper beside her and nods with that smile again
Vo:Have you travelled out before
Me: UAE, did a marine superintendent course
Vo: Your visa has been issued, passes white paper
Me: Thank you

It was just God, cause I would have fallen to the wrong person , had my interview sitting . It was just God timing my steps.
Hope you picked one or two things.
. U are favoured dude....my room mate got denied @ Abuja today with the exucuse of not convincing enough of him coming back. undecided I pray we shall all be favored by the VO bcs it's not how prepared or perfect u are.

So just to have gist this weekend. Based on this post by the VO on their thread with emphasis on the bolded...

abujaniv:

Hello slightlyMad,

The first question usually asked is something along the lines of "tell me why you are traveling to the U.S." That is the applicant's first chance to tell the officer why they are traveling and to explain their plans. We do not typically look at documents such as bank statements, wedding invitation or general invitations. Many applicants give one-word answers and don't use the opportunity to explain where they are going and why they are planning that specific trip. Applicants can ask questions during the interview - not afterwards about why they were issued or refused - to help explain their ties and their intent.

Regards,
Nigeria NIV Team
Maybe we should adopt a new style in answering questions for example
Q: why are your going to the US?
A: for vacation. I have been working for 3 years now and saving up and I feel I deserve a trip to wind down. Moreover, I have always wanted to see the empire state building since I watched kingkong so this is my opportunity to fulfill that long time dream
Or
A: Family visit. My brother lives in connecticut and since he travelled in 1988, we have not seen. This would be a great opportunity for my family to meet his wife Shanikwa and 3 kids Ada, Obi and Oko. We always speak on the phone but the chance to see them face to face will be a pleasure on both ends.

In this kind of situation, you have created avenues to lead the vo to ask you the questions you want. I believe you will also show boldness. This was the strategy I adopted for my interview in ninteen kpirigidim.
When asked why I waasnt travelling with oga, I said cos he's busy and we just came back from uk. I felt the lack of travel history was the reason I was refused the last time so I led the interview path there. And sure enough, the next question was, ' oh , you have travelled before?'
Lead the interviewer to your strenghts.

The best advice is to keep everything simple.
Anything you write or say should be like normal conversation.
No trying to be clever with long words or speeches practised in front of a mirror.
Worse nothing copied from the internet, if you have seen it online, so has the Visa Officer.

Remember. no speeches ! normal conversation words and phrases. grin

Visa officer is not impressed by visits to other African countries.
If you are only going to get a visa stamp you are wasting money.

Strong ties to prove that you will return return home, and good financial record will be much more help.

LadyG you're right because during my second interview ''He asked me why I want to visit the U.S'' and I told him I'm visiting U.S to attend a fraud conference that was organised by certified examiners and also the title of the conference and date as well.. He asked me why it's important for me to attend the conference then I told him about the contract we won from Federal Govt to investigate some agencies and also how the skill acquired will help me in fighting fraud in Nigeria.. The V.O was nodding and asking personal questions as well as why I was refused by U.S earlier and also U.K
People talk as much as possible and also be brief as well try to make sense oooo

The truth is that if you have a U.S visa why bother paying for accommodation and feeding which will be provided by ICAN (Very expensive) ask for the cost of the conference and pay for it as well as arranging your feeding and accommodation. it will save you some $$$

Hilda2016:
GoodMorning Everyone,
I'm married with a lovely family,One daughter and she will be three very soon. I work as a health officer in one of the private hospitals in Lagos with salary of 60,000/month & I have been working for almost two years now.
Early dis year, specifically (Feb) I applied for Visit visa to the US. My uncle sent me an invitation , but was denied in Lagos. NOTE: I used my uncle as the sponsor, cause he was the one inviting me.

Transcript below(in no particular other): 8:30am schedule

Me: goodmorning with a smile
Vo(male)- goodmorning and relaxed
vo-why r u going to the us
me-to visit my mum's brother..
vo- oh u mean ur uncle?
me-yes
vo-were ?
me-i told him..****
vo-busy looking at his system and tying
vo-were does he work and what does he do?
me-i told him
vo-after each question looks at his system and keep typing
vo-why is he inviting u, why not some other member of the family? and looking at me eyeball2eyeball
me- the question strike me with shook..so i repiled,he has invited other member of the family and they re back.
vo-are married?
me-yes
vo-you have kids?
me-yes. just one.
vo-were do u work?
me-i repiled.
vo-have u traveled bf?
me-no
vo-keeps typing and said sorry u do not................
I was very sad and went home. Alot of single people was denied about 90%. familes were all given visa and elderly people.

*When I got home and told my hubby he felt bad too After discusing with some of his wildly travelled friends, they advice we travel as a family. I have rescheduled my leave to fall with that of my hubby. and we have just applied again for a family summar vacation and will be using hotel resavation. Interview scheduled for next month. My hubby have only traveled to Ghana before we got married for a training. but he has good job and payed about N350k and he has about 6million in his salary account.

please, can the house advice me on what to expect during the interview and every positive criticism will be highly welcomed.
Thanks

Lack of preparedness caused you the visa. Also, it makes no economical sense for your uncle to sponsor you as an adult vacationing in the US except you're a minor and sponsor is your parent, spouse or partner. For an adult to qualify for a tourist visa, they must meet the visa requirements and have strong financial ties to cover their trip.

You should reapply with your husband who will be your sponsor and be be ready to present your case to the consular officer in a clear and concise manner. You only have few minutes to convince the officer why your visa should be approved. Outline all the points you want to make especially the question "why are you travelling to the US? @LadyG did a very good job this morning by giving clues to that very question. Not sure anyone here should have a problem with this very important question again.

Hi everyone, Gud evening ,pls I will like the house to help me out on this, my family applied for US visa last year May but we were denied because of our financial incapabily as written in d paper given to us despite the fact that husby earns 250k and I earn 80k and we've both travelled to Kenya before. Now hubby alone for conference or vacation wants to apply what are the chances and how prepared should he be? Though he has been promoted at work and now earns more and I have a registered business too but my own leave wasn't approved so that's the reason why am not applying with him.
Re: USA Visit Visa Part 2 by seyewest(m): 9:39pm On Apr 24, 2016
@Hilda what you earn in Nigeria is like minimum wage in U.S so how can you convince the V.O that you will return to Nigeria? secondly how can your uncle sponsor your trip? Why not your husband? little things like this makes a lot of difference... remember for you to visit U.S on your own salary will cost you at least 6 months of your salary
