Exactly what I am talking about. They wouldn't have to.instead they will be transporting themselves to business districts in Ketu, Ojo, Surulere etc

This particular one is a waste and absolutely unnecessary. That state is already choked with vehicular traffic. Lagos needs to cater less for cars but more for trains, underground and bicycles.
Even the British knew this and made sure that you pay through your nose if you drove to the island ( there were parking meters everywhere,every 30 minutes, you had to feed the meter).
They have a metro already. Complete it,ring the street with overground railway, raise revenues with heavy congestion charges and biannual driving licenses, create bicycle lanes. This is what cities elsewhere are doing.
Not continue to waste money on ever expanding cities.
To even think about the amount of petrol being consumed in the state ( stuffs they should be exporting).
Let me guess, Once they quickly get all those vehicles into the island, they will have to waste more money expanding roads on the island.

oduastates especially and headboiy have a good points. While I appreciate the 4th mainland bridge, I think there is also need to try another means of transportation like the light rail. At the end of the day, or let me say in 20,30 years time, we will all see the need to have multiple modes of transportation in a city like Lagos. If the government is serious about free movement of people in the state, it should as well invest heavily in other modes of of transportation else we will continue to have the need to construct bridges.

Although i presume u mean well for the development of oduastates as your moniker suggests but you're totally unaware or ignoring (whichever it is) some very important facts in your assertions.

First- Building a 4th mainland bridge is not a wasteful shortsighted approach rather it's the opposite.
Although i do agree that decongesting traffic in the metropolis is not a single solution problem as other cushioning measures are needed (e.g efficient public transport amidst other things) but the 4th mainland bridge is definitely a right step in the right direction.

If u think lagos is gonna be submerged in less than a 100 yrs, don't u think it's gon be more catastrophe if there's a subway involved considering in Nigeria where there's barely a functional emergency service.

This is very opinionated and i do not see it in the same light but without concrete facts yet, I'll let this slide.


This is neither a single solution problem but you did raise very interesting and important solutions which can seriously be considered. Kudos

Lastly - Constructing a subway if you know the intricacies involved would consume 5 or more times the amout of building that bridge so it's is definitely not a cost cutting measure esp in a previously unplanned and presently overpopulated place like lagos.

The govt builds 4th mainland bridge (if they successfully complete it in 8yrs) and more people migrate to Lagos/acquire cars and we are back to square one and thinking of 5th mainland bridge.

1. Companies should mandate the use of staffbuses and encourage car pooling by not providing parking space or making it extremely expensive.

2. Companies introduce telecommuniting and flexi-working to reduce mad rush to the Island daily.

3. Govt should develop other parts of Lagos so they are attractive for investors and everyone doesn't feel they have to be on the Island and Ikeja.

4. Build a solid water transport system... Ajah to Ikorodu is about 10mins via water. God blessed Lagos with a lot of water... Epe, Ajah, Apapa, Marina, Lekki, V/I etc.

A transport mode to accommodate the influx of cars ain't the answer.

In the long term, other Governors should think of building their states to become an investment attraction so that some people can move back to their States and gradually decongest Lagos.

A coy who has the staff strength of 10 contributes minutely to the traffic and does not need to provide staff buses.

I am referring to coys that 40% of her staff lives in area A or has a central takeoff point.

Even if people are scared of water, the 'brave/adventurous' ones would use the water and decongest the road for others.

Ok, here's a summary.

The centre of the City of Lagos is congested. By centre I mean places like Lagos Island, Yaba, Surulere, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki Phase 1, Apapa and all the way down to Ikeja. The question is, how do you decongest it and provide alternatives. Furthermore, the UN has projected that Lagos will be one of the worlds largest mega-cities by 2030. How do you cater for this huge population and provide the critical infrastructure that it will require.

There have been two ways that planners have devised to solve these problems. One is to build satellite towns within Lagos and the other is to make it easier for people to live outside Lagos and come into the city/state to work.

There is a third solution, which is to ensure that there is enough growth and development in other states, such that people will not need to migrate to Lagos, but that's outside the powers of the Lagos State Government.


With respect to developing new towns outside the centre of the city, governments in the past have developed Festac Town, Satellite Town and parts of Ikorodu and Epe and the city has expanded and swallowed them up. Private developers have also developed other satellite towns in Ogun State, places like Mowe and Ibafo and the city has expanded and swallowed them up.

In more recent times, the Lagos State Government has planned the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Ibeju Lekki (far away to the east of the city), the Badagry Energy City (far away to the west of the city) and the Eko Atlantic City (to the south of the city).

The Lekki Free Trade Zone will contain lots of industrial concerns, including a large refinery and it will also have a seaport and an airport, to reduce the pressure on Apapa Port and Murtala Muhammed Airport. The 4th Mainland Bridge and the expressway to Ijebu are two strategies for moving traffic out of the Free Trade Zone without that traffic going through the centre of the city and causing even greater congestion. Other strategies include the Green Railway Line (from Lekki Free Trade Zone to Marina) and the railway line on the bridge.


With respect to people living outside the state and coming into the state to work, that's why the state government plans to build the Red Line which will go as far as Agbado in Ogun State and that's the benefit of the standard gauge rail line that has almost been complete. With the standard gauge line you can live in Ibadan or Abeokuta and work in Lagos.

But it is stated in the report that they are looking for a company that will build the bridge ( source for the fund and engage a construction company to do the job) then, the same company will operate the facility for some years through tolling to get their money back and so far about 37 companies have shown interest.

The reality is that the Lagos state government is not going to pay a dime for the project
