CHAPTER SEVEN

[b]The old lady sat there for a long time as if assessing what I had just said then without warning she spoke to my relief. "I will accept your reasons, since they sound honest enough. But I will also like to remind you of the proverb which talks about curiosity killing the cat. I don't say I am going to kill you, but unhealthy curiosity is good for nobody."

"Thank you Madam, I will always remember that."

The old lady rang a bell by her chair and the butler who had brought me the snacks and drinks reappeared.

"Madam called," he bowed from the waist.

"Indeed, i did Peter, bring me a glass of whisky and some ice cubes."

Within minutes the order had been brought and the old lady turned to me when the butler left.

"Feel at ease, request anything you will like to drink, even if it is whisky like me. Feel at home, because apart from these preliminary questions I asked you, I want you to do something for me. Teach my grand daughter Economics and Mathematics. She could not make it to Nsukka last year, and I want her to give it a good try this year."

These rich people and their idiosyncrasy. With such a great influence, she should have pulled a string at Nsukka. And, her grand daughter would be gladly admitted. Or she could have send her to one of the private university, Bowen,Convenant and the likes.

"But how did you know about me and that I could teach her Madam?"

"Look at me and look at this place, young man," the old lady laughed slyly. "Don't I look to you like someone of influence? Indeed perhaps I know more about you than you know of yourself. Did you not have second class upper at Nsukka?"

"Yes indeed, I did Madam." I answered in surprise.

"I spoke to the Minister of Education and I got all the information I needed on you from Nsukka. Instead of bringing a teacher all the way from Lagos everyday by helicopter, I guessed I could use the teacher in the house, so to speak."

"I am at your service then Madam."

"So how much would you charge me to teach Melody three times a week for two hours each?"

I was at that time earning about #70,000 a month from the teaching appointment, so i said something in the region of #35,000.

The old lady looked at me in sympathy. "How much are you paid at the school?"

"Seventy thousand naira Ma."
I will pay you #70,000 then. You poor teachers have been treated so badly that you don't know how to spend money anymore. I will send the Landcruiser to collect you everyday you have a lesson with her."

"Thank you Madam."

"You are welcome, but just make sure she makes it to the university this year."

It sounded like an ultimatum, and that made me shiver a little.

I know its too short. But, please help me to manage it.
