Hello House!!! Please, I'm thinking of a Masters in International Relations or Public Administration in any of the prestigious and affordable Universities in New Jersey. Please do I need a GRE in additional to my TOEFL? Please which Universities should I be looking at? Thanks

What's Ur budget? It would be nice for you to research the schools and coming on NL to ask which school is better.

However, check Columbia University.

Hello house, please do i need to open a domicilliary account before i travel to the states, just incase i wish to send money to naija thru the African toof market & co, as i have read. Really dont know how these thing works. Ur response will be much welcomed, thanks.

You don't need to open any account. You can send money directly into most bank accounts from here at really good rates.

Just create a new Skype Account & pls Dont use a funky username. Also get a really good internet plus laptop and let the room lighting be great plus it should be quiet.
I did a GA interview recently on a position to provide services with students with academic disabilities (I didnt get the position but I did great)be sure to check what responsibiities you will oerform as a TA. I was mostly talking about my work with people with disabiltiies ina hospital setting and not people with academic disabilities. I did great as per their reply email but cuz it was so so competitive, tthe way they picked the final person was excruciating. Make sure you highlight your academic and teaching abilities since its a TA. Dont dwell toomuch on work skills cuz its not an administrative position. You should sell yourself as an excellent student maybe in courses you scored A in your undergrad (highlight those well),talk about something e.g cell as a biology student, use terms and words affiliated to your field. And um, be sure to also highlight your communication skills, talk audibly, dont fake accent but speak so they can hear you, highlight your work-rate and energy and organizational skills (that you can combine and prioritize the TA and your studies). Dont put pressure on yourself but put up a performance that once you drop the call, you are confident you are the candidate they are looking for. You might not be the only one your grad-crod will interview and you dont know if its one position. And lastly, I read this tip on Quora, if you can make a professional laugh during an interview, that will be great. And dont be too deceived by body-language (nodding of head), I'm talking based on my interview (visa &GA), you can be talking off point and they will still be nodding, make sure you are making sense. Remember sometimes, second place gets you nothing, so prepare well and show yourself approved. Goodluck!

You've said it all, was too lazy to type a long story about my experience.
But this is enough and sufficient information.
Wish you the best.
Will add this :Be yourself, relate all your answers to your experience, be clear, be professional, it's like a job interview, it's okay to be nervous, but you will pick up confidence as it goes, pray also; it's God's favour.
Best of luck

Nice work here bosses. Have been glued to this thread after reading several visa success stories. Experienced bosses over there please can you talk about life after school as in getting a job and the likes as majority of us will like to know about those too because the job opportunities back here isn't much encouraging except one has a work to come back too.
Thanks

Hey Neanderthal no one on this thread will suggest a school to you, so you're making a life changing decision such as choosing a school based on mere suggestions not intellectual fit or the rigorousness of research, oga you have a virulent strain of lethargy/slothfulness I cannot deal with.... Abeg miss

Post it please.. now we know the secret to most Chinese and Indian students. Don't get me wrong, some of them and exceptional but we've met some with awful command of English. They however, always have good essays.

i feel more Africans will have higher chances at admissions now that the Chinese students' "mojo' has been exposed. The verification process during admissions might affect some of our people though.

Hello house!
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 9 by Nobody: 11:41pm On May 26, 2016
So the journey that started on this platform about two years ago was consolidated with a visa approval at the Lagos consulate on the 23rd of May.

I left the hotel around 5AM with my dad after a brief shower. I had to leave that early for my appointment at 630AM because I did not bring the right specification of passport from home to the hotel the previous night. I got to the consulate and had to ‘shell out’ 1500 naira for a very terrible photo.

After several checks, at least three, we were ushered into the building for the biometrics. The lady who took my data was so nasty and kept shouting instructions at people, myself included. I proceeded to join the queue, I was among the first ten people on the rather long queue. The consulate officers sounded quite convivial. A young man with think ‘Igbo’accent going to the UM College Park for MS in Metallurgy was approved as well as a plumpy lady too. The College Park applied to just a school but still got his visa. Another woman with a walking defect who was going to see her son who has been in the US since 2006 was approved too.

It was my turn, window 4, some minutes to 8, white guy with some extra build.

VO: Good morning. Pass me your documents please.

Me: Morning, how you doing today? (With a slight smile)

VO: So tell me about your program

Me: I am going to Kansas State University to pursue a PhD degree in computer science.

VO: What will your course work involve?

Me: I will be taking advanced computer science courses in order to satisfy the breadth requirements that will qualify me to become a doctoral candidate in the first two semesters. I will also take a research preliminary exam to satisfy this condition.

VO: So tell me about your assistantship.

Me: This is one of the most compelling reasons for choosing K-State. I get to tutor undergraduate students a fundamental Computer course during teaching hours, grade scripts and proctor tests which will prepare me for a career in academics.

VO: I will be approving your visa.

He gave me a white paper, circled a location to pick it up and talked about the educationUSA orientation on the 26th of July and gave me a flyer to accompany it.
Profile…GPA: 3.28/4 or 3.64/5, GRE: 316 162Q 154V 4.5AWA TOEFL 107

Special appreciation to my brother and friend (godG), the delectable iya Ibadan (msNas), My big bros (mystiqme), the generous and big-hearted guy(slimmy2005), one of the funniest guy I have met (ojah), lovely guy (bigFrancis21), my amazing colleague (baodium), great guy (walspring) my lovely friends (gunther6, cutemorgan, fortissimo, kennyrony, OjaP, biikeys, gboyegaD, ttmacoy, danjaNinja, horayce, dicapino, ebdib, stolid), for all his humour and lovely jokes(warriboy21), for his efficient administration(justwise)

To future applicants:

1. Listen to the gurus. But do your own findings please. If you are planning for next fall, start searching for schools now. Mail professors after you have read their journals and find anything interesting, mail grad students, be proactive and dedicated. Many will not reply you but you will learn a lot during the process.

2. Spread your risks. Ranked, moderate, safe schools. I applied to 8, three good ones and five safe. Be realistic with your ambitions. The expenses pile up real quick and you don’t want to do this thing twice.

3. Study hard for your standardized tests. If you are an engineering student, a 160 should be your target on the quant section of the GRE.

4. Have a LinkedIn account and edit your resume well. Let it suit your application for grad school. Nobody cares if you sold gala in front of Eko hotel. Accentuate your professional skills and experience.

5. Your SOP is the most important. Maybe I am exaggerating, but not too much. After GPA, SOP is the second most important material in my opinion. Let many people read it and critique it.

6. Apply early but do not rush them. I completed all my applications before the end of October last year. If you have 4.0/5.0 and GRE of 320 at least, apply to PhD programs. There is funding priority for students accepted into PhD programs.

7. Be hopeful. If you are religious, hold on to it and be hopeful.

Thanks to everyone who appealed for my ban to be lifted.
I promise not to deliberately derail the thread in the future too. Thanks for your magnanimity, Justwise. My actions were not deliberate.
I reply my mentions from without even checking if the requests for the facebook group add actually came from
the Education thread or from here.
Ojap I am sorry for what happened to your post too.

Congrats to those who got their visas. Good luck to those heading to the consulate.
