And try to get some practical productive skill that generates tangible goods to save you a lot of turbulence in life. Nigeria does not have the foundation for what you do or claim to do.

This is what I used to tell my students. Dress well and have decent haircut too. But because you guys within the range of 18 to 21 always think we that we are older don't know what we are saying. You get yourself attracted to cultists, armed robbers and police with the way you dress, carry yourself, talk and so on.
you've said nothing but the truth. They dress like criminals and expect not to be monitored. Very funny! On several occasions, I've walked pass whr police are doing thorough raiding and investigation, they dare not talk to me. Hardly will a policeman see anyone decently dressed and arrest such person. It amazes me how someone will dress like a ragamuffin and expect the police to look elsewhere.

I feel for you my dear. Unfortunately, that is the Nigeria you were born into, It is the Nigeria that has been existing for a long time, It is the Nigeria that is frustrating some of the best brains this country has out of the country and the sad thing is that it is the Nigeria that some people think it is worth preserving. But I tell you, this Nigeria that is built on injustice which law enforcement system is sustained through injustice is going nowhere and will arrive nowhere until its foundation is relayed on justice.

As for you, I pray God will heal your heart, and for your abusers, the vengeance of God will visit them.

I was once a victim of Police corruption too.

Maybe next time you won't cheer the soldier to deal decisively with pro Biafr@ agitators!

Next time you won't waste your MB in Naira waging war against an entire tribe over the offense of few people.

Next time you won't generalize igbos as yahoo people, the same way SARS Apprehended you and label you yahoo boy is the same way they do to others and you hail them.

Have you specifically caught the op doing any of the above? Or you're also stereotyping him??

Those bastard bad policemen from a thousand fathers will never rip good from their sweat. They will ever live to regret their existence on earth and nothing good will come out from their or their family. Sango will strike their family and when it remain a second for them to achieve good things in life, they will never live to achieve it. I hate them with passion. I've had encounter with them, and the last one siezed my laptop just becos of house pictures saying am into yahoo which I know nothing about. God go purnish them ooo. I had to call an Army friend of mine in Auchi Barack, Edo State, so he said I should give them 2k and collect my laptop since he wasn't in Lagos. I felt embarrased and if not for some issues and my dad that doesn't want problem for himself, I would have taken up the matter and make sure they sack those fools of their job cos I see no where in court where picture is not an offense in the world. Sowie OP!!! Next time, follow them to their Area Command and demand on seeing the Head of the Area Comman, take the case up and make contacts, find someone who knows an Army, Airforce or Navy and let them intervene. They all hate police officers and you will see how they will drill those foolish police right in front of you. Well, sorry and next time try and have one or two military man's number on your phone.

Sorry eeh. Some times you just gotto let some things go. Reporting dem is good but those guys can set u up as a youngman and quickly organise gun by you side and label you a criminal. Pls reduce on things that give you away as most times inocent people are usually harassed by looks, which in a proper setting should not be. Once again sorry, dont worry about people who saw u in their, everyone know those boys are always after money. Next time never argue with an officer, just keep your calm and next time try solve issues by ur self... All the best.
Pathetic,he should pursue it to logic conclusion ,those guys are nothing but fraud,so ounce you are given training paid for by my taxes and you are given uniform and in the case of SARS ID card and guns with cuffs and tear gas you should be using it to be stealing from others, most of this illegal operation if may let you know is not approve by the senior officers, which I knew from experience so if they have to be expose to serve as deterrent to others let it be,and stop encouraging brutality

That's the new change we are experiencing o.

Human rights are no longer respected!!!

They have a mentor in Buhari.

At what point in Nigerian history were human rights ever respected?

The current Nigerian administration recently refused to sign a world human rights violation treaty. Go figure!

Like an hour ago, I was at the back sit of SARS vehicle with handcuffs in my hands. They said am a Yahoo boy for having a kik application on my smartphone.

I was traveling from Omu Aran to ilorin, I pressed up, wearing my blue Jean, T shirt, my newly bought African shaped neck chain and All stars sneakers. So the journey began and we passed the first police check point and few minutes after continuing the journey, we got to SARS people (at a junction in about entering Oke Onigbin town) and we were told to come down (all boys), I first feel scared but also I have nothing to be scared off cause I have the receipt for all my gadget with me, so I keep calm and answer his question perfectly. He check my pocket and found my two phones (Lumia 535 and Infinix Note 2), he check my bags and found my belongings (books, wires and my laptops), he asked if I have the receipt and I answered yes. Then he said I should unlock my phone (Note 2), I did and he start checking then he saw a social media app (KIK) on my phone, he asked if am a "game boy" and I said yes, all my mind was he is asking about video games because I have up to 20 games on my phone. He check other guys then told me to follow him, I did and he said "it's good that I don't lie", he asked my school and my name and I told him. Then from no where he said am a "Yahoo boy", the soul in me seems to left my body that moment, I realise am in big soup and I start swearing on everything that comes to my mouth. I deny his allegations then he start frowning and threat to destroy my career in school and that I will go to jail if I didn't confess, so I decided to come down to his level and ask how much to settle him, he said 20k, I started begging but he's desperate and then he called his boss, an old man, to my surprise he also lay the same allegations and all I can do is start begging and swearing am not a Yahoo boy.

After begging and rejecting their allegations, I was told to sit behind their vehicle, I did and they close the door on me while one of them keep saying they should handcuff me, I keep rejecting their allegations and then the guy earlier attempted to slap me right in the vehicle I sat in, he then decided to handcuff me from then. They start claiming they will destroy my life, that I agreed to been a Yahoo boy and then I started denying it again. I decided to keep shut and wait till my dad comes since we are not too far from home and I have signal to my brother (we both traveling together) to call my dad which he did, I waited and didn't talk to them anymore. Every cars passing were all looking at me right behind the vehicle, I felt embarrassed.

My dad came and they attended to him, they tell him what they said I am (yahoo boy) and that I have admit it, he knowing fully well who I am, told them that I am not and he knows fully what I do online. He told them that I am an importer and also work online as a freelance graphic designer. They said the app is for Yahoo boys and not app to import goods. I can't help but burst into tears because am presently embarrassing my dad along with me.

The boss then show my dad an app on his phone but my dad doesn't know anything about this stuff, the boss told me to explain what happened in front of my dad, I did and he ask why I have those apps on my phone, I explain am an importer and also an online person but he left and asked the first guy to attend to us. So my dad asked what the solution is since he knows they all want money, I didn't hear what goes next but he later gave them 2k after demanding for 5k, they removed the handcuff, gave my phone back to me and we left.

I have never experienced anything like this in my entire 20 years on earth, I only hear it but it happened to me today. It makes it my first time in their car or police car and first time of been in handcuff (which breaks my heart).

This is purely violation of human right and I regret that I have no evidence to follow this up. But never can I forget their faces on this earth.

***The app (Kik) is a social media app which I used to chat with a friend in Los Angeles, not a very common app in Nigeria but one of the most used app in USA making it the only social app to connect with her.

If this is what Nigeria has become (became), then it's a sad story.

Don't know if this is the right section, mods plz help forward to Front Page.

They just wanted to obtain you grin

Police are silly clowns..

I can tell you from here that you dressed very loud and carried costly gadgets along with you probably wearing an earphone when they accosted you.

I think ICQ is the worst app to have on ur fone..... If anyone see that app on ur fone... automatically you are ''Yahoo Boy''

Make SARS, SSS or EFCC catch u with such app on your fone... You are on your own

MrMcJay:

Reminds me of an incident on Thompson Road in Ikoyi just before British Council, there was this convoy of policemen who left their lane and faced oncoming traffic.

Unfortunately for them, the convoy of the British High Commissioner was what they faced. Come and see uniformed begging. They were prostrating on the road as the HC's convoy refused to let them go.

Another time in Opebi. I was in a cab when these cops stopped me. They asked of my occupation and I told them I'm a lawyer. They asked of my ID and I asked if I'm under suspicion of any offence. They said I was rude. They now insisted on going through my phone. I told them that if anyone went through my phone, that would be the last day such person would wear the police uniform.

What I did was to call one of my dad's friends who was a DIG at that time. I told the leader to speak to him. Once he heard the name, the man started sweating and stammering. I just collected my phone and walked away. I told them I was going to work their transfers to the NE.

Most of these cops are illiterates and they're giving the few good eggs a bad name.

OP, if you how the name of the guys who harassed you, send me a PM.

You know what scares me the most? The average Nigerian who does not have that kind of privilege or connection would be held hostage by those mofos. What kind of society is this for God's sake. That episode and a couple of other horror stories is one of the reasons i swore never to come to that fracking country ever again. It is absolutely reprehensible when you cannot differentiate a policeman from a tout or armed robber.

You're 20 yrs old and should have known better. How could you have a messaging app on your phone and still couldn't defend it?
Kik is simply an instant messaging application! The police thieves didn't know what it was, so they used it as they had no other way to extort money from you!

So you ended up helping them indirectly by fumbling when they asked you if you were a "game boy". To them game boy means Yahoo Boy. And you replied "Yes". That was when you digged your own hole.

Nigerian police is one of the most corrupt in the world, they're outright thieves! You must know how to deal with them. They're always looking for a way to extort money from people. They don't police and have no clue on how to do their job as police. They're armed robbers in uniform!

First, your dressing and hair cut portray a yahoo boy, your father assumed you to be an importer and meanwhile what do you import? Why are you using an App that is not common to 9ija? They just left you because of your fada.

I still don't get why your first idea of reporting your ordeal has to be on nairaland instead of a law office. Suing the officers in court would have been a better idea. The more we continue to pay them bribe and thank our stars for getting off their hooks, the more "powerful" they get. If you really want to avoid another embarrassment, get a lawyer.... there should be one in your family.

Put it down to experience. But I wonder what is the point of going to school.

You said you are a "game boy" Meaning
You say you started swearing with anything? So that?
You decided to "come down to his level" what does that mean?
Does a policeman have a right to search your phone without a warrant ?
Were you formally arrested?
were you cautioned?

Everything you have said is very ridiculous.

You should have insisted on making a statement and being charged to court.
You should have stood your ground and told your father not to pay one kobo

Everything you did suggested you just wasted money going to school
You can stand your ground politely and firmly without being disrespectful

I can't help but burst into tears because am presently embarrassing my dad along with me if this is the right section, mods plz help forward to Front Page.
sorry bro, samething happened to me also at YABA market here in Lagos almost two months now, when I was searching for an NTEL office address which someone posted on nairaland just to mislead people. Inside the hot sun, I walked into dis so call stupid people call police, I was walking and I heard someone behind me whistling and saying excuse me, since I was not the only one walking at yaba market, I didn't answer neither look around not until I was tapped on my shoulder and showed one roughly I.D card that he's an officer, and I said to him "how may I help you", he said they were doing stop and search but I was surprised I was not in a car. I was taking to where their bus was packed and they stylishly collected my phone and operated it, even more than I do, till a kik app was discovered on my phone and he said who are dis people on my list, I answered him that they are friends and the app is for chatting, what I heard next is that I want to know you(i.e he want to know me). Sure I wasn't the only one in their bus, a guy was trying to explain something to one of them and the next thing I heard from a police officer was "abi you wan make I choke you for there if you no shut up" . I was been transported from yaba to iponri where their station is but to my surprise when we were about gettinto their station the driver stop the bus and I was been accompanied to a cafe outside the station, they didn't even requested for time he just signed in on a system and he opened Facebook, Hotmail, Gmail, yahoo and said I should sign in my account which I did since I didn't have any skeleton in my cupboard, he searched through my mails and he found nothing and I asked him can I leave? and he said yes. I was on my way home when I changed all my mails password bcus I didn't sign out at the cafe. It was a bad experience embarassed bcus that was my first time a police will stop me and I don't walk at night also. I beg police no be your friend ooooo, they can kill someone and dump the person by the roadside at midnight. They are just people trying to make earn not to secure. Police policeee policeeeee

We have many confused, daft and criminals masquerading as law enforcement in Nigeria with zero checks on their illiegal activities such as falsely incarcerating and accusing innocent citizens which goes on repeatedly with impunity. What an unfortunate country to be born in.
