Tatia, your N2,200 per head monthly sounds about right, depending on what you're feeding with etc.

Yes, three grown pigs can share 8'x8' room but that depends on how big you expect them to be. At 70-80 kg, you're good to go but larger than that I'm not so sure.

For expected profit, you've almost finished the maths; you've arrived at a reasonable feed cost per head. Add your other variables and get total cost. For income, just multiply your target weight by N300-N350 per kg.

Thanks for Femu. Your growth rate is quite impressive. Are you willing to share the major components of your feed? Will really appreciate. Thanks

Not ideal to locate a piggery in a residential area. With the waste and smell that will come from the waste , you are bound to run into problems with your neighbors plus it will be difficult to expand your business in a residential area. Waste management will generally be more difficult to manage and expensive in a residential area.
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by SinaAkinsanya: 2:06am On May 27, 2016
Forgot to ask Femu and indeed everyone; what is the average feeding cost/month for say pigs in the range
20-40 kg; 50-70 kg and 75-95kg to get an average monthly growth rate of at least 10 kg. The average total operating cost per pig for us is around N1350/pig/month with an average monthly growth rate of about 5kg. Total operating costs includes all expenses such as feed, salary, repairs and maintenance, drugs etc but excluding cost of finance.
Responses will be appreciated.

Good day all

i want to say a special thanks to the contributors of this business i have been following up for the past 4months, taking notes and i have really developed passion for this business though am still working i cant depend on my salary alone anymore. having read all the post on pig business and other findings i took a trip to Osu around illesia to meet a friend who is into the business with what i was impressed, i took a decision to get a pen in his farm to raise 30piglet to finisher stage, my intention is to sell them at the end of 6months. i want to use it as a test run and i want to achieve a minimum kg of 80kg, although i have research some foreign pig farmer who get more than such kg in 6months, but for now i want to see what is achievable with my locale. please ur almost advice will be need especially on how to achieve such weight at 6months in terms of feeding and maintenance. Godbless. loveth ib 08036040292 for any watsapp group pls add me.

First, try read everything on this thread from page 1; there are lots of valuable information here.
Secondly, with what you have, you'll have to rent a place for starters. You didn't say where you're based but I hope there are places you can rent nearby.
Also, don't start with too many pigs; your N600k is going to cover all your expenses for like a year & piggery can be capital intensive.

marketing and feed source is also important.

Do you have existing farmers friends in Ede?

Have you identified reliable sources of feeding?

If your farm is too remote you will be compelled to sell below market price.

Identify where your buyers will be coming from and position yourself along the route!

I must say, reading this thread from start to finish is definitely a game changer. To everyone that has contributed one way or the other, I salute you.
I intend going into pig farming but the whole idea is to start small and grow into a big commercial farm. With feeding cost as a focus.
Please, kindly provide me with the recommended spacing requirement (square foot per pig) as detailed below for.
1. Boar
2. Sows/Gilts
3. Furrowing pig
4. Weaner pig
5. Grower pig
6. Finisher
With this, I can design the pen to get the targeted market weight and also estimate the number of plots needed for future expansion. The plan is to have a monthly sales of 100-500 mature pigs (future plan). Again feeding cost a top priority. Dreaming big guys. Thanks
