Is not all per say, am a mechanic, a heavy duty diesel mechanic and have been doing this job for like 10 years now (just working experience) have worked both in garage,small companies and big companies.
During all my working times I get to understand the bridge between a mechanic and the car/truck owner,the car/truck owner is ready to spend millions on any part just to see his machine back to operation but fine it difficult to pay the mechanic for his services,so that made the mechanics to use the part as opportunity to get their money from the owner of the car /truck....
Finally car/truck owners do under rate most mechanics just because of their age, tribe,religion education etc which made them to fall into the hands of the wrong ones.......

Op....I pmbfirstson can stand anywhere to testify myself as an honest and true mechanic shocked

Like seriously...
I just called one that I collected his number from a friend to help me check and drive one camry I intends to buy from a dealer at ikotun...he charged me 35k because I called with German number. I waited for 3days after and rom my number now it showed Etisalat to him I made same request he said u will pay my transport sir and give me 2k...then I say no problem...I just begin wondering.....why he first charge 35k wen he was international number.

But more seriously I think we should talking about working smart, cos the need for hardwork is inevitable.
"smart" work like it is use in Nigeria settings means leaving work undone any making more money.

I.e as a mechanic you bring a fault I fix in such away to make you come back... invariably making more money off you.

Every body in lagos with hand craft is wicked. Tailor o, mechanic o, driver o, conductor o, generator repairer, Barber o, carpenter o, welder o and even market women. They are senseless as well.

You are very right. It's like almost everyone in this country are very dis-honest. Our appetite to get quickly rich has turned the whole nation to country without value for each other except to rip each other off. We always looks for ways to take advantage of each other. That is why today, even in our churches and mosque, filthy men moves around like men of God.

Lol..this made me remember my brother's mechanic, he turned my brother to mobile ATM..I havent seen where a mechanic calls to wish his customers happy weekend..

It got to a point,my brother stopped picking his call,because anytime he picks his call,his car would develop fault..

It was the mechanic,who bought the car as scrap..

My advice,buy a good car,once it starts having complicated issues,sell it.

U go fear customer service na. grin

As the one who was at fault I felt bad parting with that amount so I wrote him a cheque. I drove off something told me to pass by bedwell(spare parts heaven in calabar) I stopped and asked one Chuks how much an Audi bumper costs, he said 8k and he'll help me cast it, I was like seeing my face Chuks thought I was annoyed and started begging me that I should give him 6k last. I told him not to worry that he should follow me, the speed Wey I take rush reach that workshop Ehn, thankfully he hadn't cashed the cheque I said I didn't give him the right one. The demon immediately gave me back the cheque and said I forgot to add some parts bla bla bla. Na so I tear the cheque to pieces and asked Chuks to give them the list, Chuks did and it amounted to 18k, that was how everything was settled. So that guy would've scammed me of 59k simply because the soft and weak 'condom' car Audi always comes out looking worse for wear. Walahi mechanics no go make heaven

Why don't you just get a good insurance package?
You wouldn't have to issue your personal cheque and feel bad again

You re generalising. I ve one mechanic that ve not disappointed me. He worked with bristol I don't know if I got the spelling well for 12 years before setting up his own company. He is very honest and knows his onions. Opposite him is an ac man that is also perfect. Pls don't generalise

You're quite right. However, I think there are still genuine ones among them. Most especially those that specializes in a particular car brand. Met a few specialists and so far they're honest fellows.

Well guys I've following all you're saying and all your experiences are not diff from mine then. All these mechanics we have around do not know shit. They do guess work.
To cut their excesses a bit, make sure that you are there anytime they'll work on your car, you'll feel you don't have d time but u must create time. If you don't have time, park d car when u have time because once you are not there, they will never repair whatever fahlt ur car has.
Secondly let them tell u what they will do on d car, negotiate workmanship differently from buying d parts and make sure after work u pay him what he charged u.
Depending on what he needs to buy, go and buy it yourself, forget the fear they will put in u that you'll buy fake, it's a lie.
Always observe your car, there are certain things that will happen to ur car, you'll be able to figure out where it could be or you Google if.

Most of us form big boy for them, relaxing in their bedroom and call him to come and carry the car to fix, the worst you do is when they ask you what is wrong you'll say you don't know, that he should go and check. Once he gets to the workshop, he'll pieces ur car and tell u *50 of what would've fixed d car, if u don't pay ur car will be sleeping there.
So guys try to know many things about ur car. Bigboy no dey there. Sometimes I am the person that tells d mechanics where to check or even what to do. With this you'll be spending less on mechanics and ur car won't be regular visitor to their workshop.

Mechanics are both good and evil, depending on the one they want to show you ni oo.
My re-wire used to over-bill me cos he knows i don't like my car sleeping their workshop.... anyways, fastforward and he got my window glass broken, he thought i was going to leave him to it but i bought it myself. Eveer since that day he barely collects 2-500naira for any major job he does for me. Anytime he bills me over 1k i knw he needs d money and i'll just tag along. I rememba one evening i cried for heelp due to faulty kick wc occured from nowhere, he dashed down, just touched one thing and voila! Car don start. Know what he told me? "If na anoda person i go send am on wild goose chase oo, na because na you ooo."
So, mechanics are mean because dey wanto, dey can help and be understanding if you are not non-challant, try and act bossy or wanto flash d cash without tryn to argue/laugh/act concerned with them once in a while. #okbye

Not only in Lagos.
My car ac relay had issue in kaduna, I called my mechanic and he told me to change it, that a new one cost 3k which I gave him. After a while, I travel to zaria and the same issue occurred again, I called another mechanic but this one told me that a new one cost #1500. I was angry with my Kaduna mechanic already while thanking this new mechanic. few days later, as I was passing by a spare part shop, I saw the relay displayed so I went and asked how much? The shop owner told me #150. I was speechless

op you are very correct, but they re still few good ones like mine, but the few good ones are being frustrated by bad customers also, its not just the mechanics that are bad, the society is filled with bad people every where...and when you are good people will take advantage of that to cheat you.........its so unfortunate the society is bad.

I disagree with this comment, mechanics arent wicked, they re no better than car dealers.

Mechanics in Nigeria face a lot of challenges, No1 being illiteracy , N02 Being look down upon by the average car owner.

People dont like to pay mechanics the right amount for work done on their cars.

How do you give N1,500= to someone who has spent 5hrs working on your car, you dont even buy the correct parts you insist on economy parts and still hold the poor guy responsible when your car fails forgetting that you didnt heed his advice.

mine told me that a Nissan frontier kick starter that is sold for 9k is 25k, I almost gave him the money when my driver said I should ask a third party and after asking 4 different people, I realised the guy was not being truthful and immediately he noticed a change in my body language he called somebody close to me to persuade me to give him the money so that he can get a reliable one for me.

the truth is once you dont yeid to their deceit and you give your vehicle to them to repair, they will ensure you spend more than the amount they want to fraudulently collect from you
