Modern Version of the Hippocratic Oath I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant: I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow. I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug. I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery. I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God. I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick. I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure. I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm. If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

Hippocrates II will surely be laughing wherever he is now, It is an oath to ensure you show probity in your job. The gods sworn to has been changed and replaced with honour.

we all take oaths indirectly. just look around.

school, office etc.

I believe there are Christians in here. I am here to speak on an issue which I have taken time to think through.
I see a lot of christian folks in the medical profession and most times I ask what they are doing there. Every medical doctor is under an oath which Its origin is not fully known. Before u can be a doctor, u will have to swear the HIPPOCRATIC OATH......on the day of your INDUCTION. in the Christian faith, it was clearly stated that swearing of any form is not allowed and considered a sin. Why then do I see Christians in medical school? Are they not aware of this OATH? Or did they just choose to turn a blind eye to the truth?
The medical profession has always been like a cult since the days of Hippocrates. It was initially designed with knowledge of secrets of the practice that should only be passed down to children of physicians in the olden days. Medical practise actually started like a brotherhood/cult.....the medical logo says it all(a snake wrapping a cross).....my point here is anybody who calls himself a true Christian cannot become a medical doctor without SIN (TAKING THE OATH).

So my dear Christian friends, are you really for God or do you choose to go against his instruction just because you want to enjoy the gains of being a medical doctor?.......THATS BEING A HIPPOCRITE!
I like the way you made your research. But my brother, i'll like to ask if you really researched about the oath. Do you really know what the oath is all about If you don't have an answer to this, then i guess your research is not proven and therefore void. Moreover most proffesions today do take Oath, are u literarily saying we christians should stay Jobless

No-friend.Guess you've not sworn an affidavit in a law court? God have destined some as physicians from time immemorial.Recall St.Mark is also one of them as well as a staunch disciple of Jesus Christ.Swearing the Hippocrate's oath is not a sin as it's a prerequisite to acceptance into the profession just as almost all professional bodies do globally. So do not over-spiritualize issues. Mind you I'm a doctor by training.

Because the word "oath" was used does not make it a sin. it is just a promise to serve Humanity with your knowledge. With regards to the symbol that was the symbol Moses used in the bible when God sent snakes among the children of Israel. the snake on the stick that God said any one that looks on the snake shall ne healed. Also the Motto of doctors is "we care God Heals" don't lets over spiritualise every thing. Wisdom to heal was given by God for the benefit of man. Lets not put God in a box

You are an ignoramus... your ignorance of the bible is quite shocking!

If you have read your bible, you will find out that Luke was a doctor.

Jesus gave a parable of who your neighbour is and talked about how the Samaritan tool the wounded to be treated, supposedly by a doctor.

Don't condemn what God never condemned.

Stop reading your bible upside down!

There are Christian Doctors and even with you poor knowledge of Basic things in life if you were dying, I'll still help save your life. This profession has saved more lives than our so called fake Pastors who only know how to extort money under the pretense of healing.. Being a good christian doesn't deny you the right to basic thinking of how life goes..

In as much as I forgive d ignorance of d OP, I disagree with your question on how many lives have d op n d Bible saved....it's a wrong question to have asked cos even doctors acknowledge d fact that "they cure while God heals....d Bible is d word of God n d word of God should be accorded respect. Absolutely. True Christians should especially avoid public offices. They cannot be presidents, governors, senators etc. because they'll have to recite the oath. Authentic christians should not even testify in court else they'll be asked to take oath as well

the English translation:

I swear by Apollo The Healer, by Asclepius, by Hygieia, by Panacea, and by all the Gods and Goddesses, making them my witnesses, that I will carry out, according to my ability and judgment, this oath and this indenture.

To hold my teacher in this art equal to my own parents; to make him partner in my livelihood; when he is in need of money to share mine with him; to consider his family as my own brothers, and to teach them this art, if they want to learn it, without fee or indenture; to impart precept, oral instruction, and all other instruction to my own sons, the sons of my teacher, and to indentured pupils who have taken the physician’s oath, but to nobody else.

I will use treatment to help the sick according to my ability and judgment, but never with a view to injury and wrong-doing. Neither will I administer a poison to anybody when asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a course. Similarly I will not give to a woman a pessary to cause abortion. But I will keep pure and holy both my life and my art. I will not use the knife, not even, verily, on sufferers from stone, but I will give place to such as are craftsmen therein.

Into whatsoever houses I enter, I will enter to help the sick, and I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm, especially from abusing the bodies of man or woman, bond or free. And whatsoever I shall see or hear in the course of my profession, as well as outside my profession in my intercourse with men, if it be what should not be published abroad, I will never divulge, holding such things to be holy secrets.
Now if I carry out this oath, and break it not, may I gain for ever reputation among all men for my life and for my art; but if I transgress it and forswear myself, may the opposite befall me.[5]
