I so much love the way Nairalanders jump into conclusion without an afterthought or even sef a 'beforethought'.

The man represents the whole of what Yoruba people are all about, isnt it?

This piece of news you read with scanty details (no state of origin, location) just the name alone is enough information to generalize the whole of Yoruba land as savages, isnt it?

I can see the symptoms of inferiority complex all over you.

Oh shut up, you bloody hypocrite!

I have a friend who was circumcised after she had her first baby she said the husbands family said its a tradition in their place. Also when she had a baby girl about 6months ago the girl was also circumcised sad sad when she told me I screamed in horror. Educated individuals for that matter. From EDo state. Felt like reporting to the authorities but I'm scared myself. Never believed this was still in vogue.

So how would she be enjoying sexx

Interesting.

Did not know it was practiced in the West of the Country too,I taught the Yoruba's were too enlightened for this Rubbish.

I am surprised.

In the part of the Niger Delta I come from,it is expected females do this circumcision,as a prerequisite for getting married, but I think it is voluntary, and it does not apply to the women married from other cultures.

So one day I asked my mom as a young guy,why do women from our culture get circumsized?and she replied that it is done so the woman don't become promiscuous,by removing the very thing inside a woman that makes them sexually active.

This is Barbaric, but hey it is the culture of the land.

Then as regards this man?the one that claimed he was attacked. I will leave his discussion for another day, because most times, those seeking Asylum in most Western Countries bring up stories like this,so as to get papers.

And as for the picture?could be a picture of anybody that got beaten to a pulp, which just happened to be in the Newspapers, and which the man can claim to be him.

An unrecognizable face like this here,is even hard for Nigerians to decipher if it is the man,let alone White people,so this man stands a chance of getting his papers.
makes a lot of sense, like a nigerian man claimed to be gay during an asylum claim when they introduced him to a real gay man to have sex with he ran off screaming he isn't gay no more grin

I have no idea she doesn't want to talk about it again cause she thought I was going to say I've been circumcised too. When she saw my reaction she stopped. They also give incision with blade on all the kids faces said its their way of identification shocked

Nigeria still got a long way to go,I schooled in imo state and I must say,its rampant even among educated peeps.
once had a roommate from owerri studying public health technology that was circumsiced, whose mother is a matron in a hospital and father a police officer of high rank.
despite their exposure, she still insisted that when she begets a girl, she'll also do that to her. I literarily spat at her that day.

I'm very saddened to see so many people making bigoted comments on the first page. Yes, it is a cultural issue but it is one that affects many cultures in Nigeria, including my own, I'm afraid. We need to start educating our peers- it's very difficult for a young person to educate their elders- and inform them that FGM does more harm than good. It is a violent tradition that needs to be completely eradicated.

I am just saying we need not be tribalistic to prove a point.

We all condemned the act of genital mutilation but having to ascribe that to a tribe because someone wrote a Yoruba name and we should lose all rights to reasoning is highly condemnable.

Do not let personal emotions to becloud rightful judgments.

What's wrong with female circumcision if I may ask? Male children are circumcised without noise, what's wrong with doing same for females?

If you believe this rubbish then you obviously don't have a brain.

Who has time to be chasing another man's daughter for circumcision when his own family hasn't eaten.

Nigerians would do and say anything for a visa.

Female private parts are very different to male private parts. The area that is usually mutlilated is very sensitive so the pain lasts for a lot longer for the victim compared to a guy that has been circumcised. Male circumcision doesn't prevent men from deriving pleasure from sexual intercourse whereas it can for a woman who has been circumcised. Also, it leaves them highly vulnerable to infection which can lead to long term health problems. All in all, it's not a good process to go through and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. There are some benefits to male circumcision but there are no benefits to female circumcision.

In my opinion I think most of us Nigerians that abhor FGM majorly do so because of western propaganda. If not why would male circumcision be correct and female circumcision evil, violent, again women right and all what not, is it not the same cutting?

Rather than criminalise FGM, they should try to advocate for safer FGM so that for those whose culture/religion demands it, it can be done without avoidable risk such as HIV, 'mutilations' etc, a proper standard should be created as it is with male circumcision.

Western culture is not the sole judge of moral standard and they should stop the denigration of other cultures that do not entirely agree with theirs. If female circumcision is a mutilation, so also is male circumcision, and in both cases it can be viewed as the abuse of a child's right because it's nor even done with their permission if babies could talk do you think they'd readily agree to cut their peepee

circumcision and other african culture have been under global attack for decades now.
some so-called NGOs have been set up to attack our cultures and they usually come up with crappy stories like this to draw an emotional response from people.

most ppl will not know that this story is a stupid fabrication because the Yorubas are not known for circumcision (let alone forcefully beating up someone for not doing it)

Right on spot! I've noticed that the typical Nigerian is so much in a rush that he doesn't wait to hear the last word of a sentence before giving a reply. That's why we are always getting it wrong and that is also responsible for the high failure rate in English Language and Comprehension. Logical reasoning is a big fat zero!!! sad

Female Genital mutilation. I hate it so much. I never knew I was circumcised until my husband (we were dating then) told me, in fact I argued until I confirmed from mum.
The annoying part is the excuse given for it.

-Male circumcision is exclusively about removing only the foreskin while female circumcision is more invasive.

-it affects their sex life negtively;whereas, men don't experience the same.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. However I disagree with your premise which pivots around cultural relativism. What is cultural relativism? It is the understanding that no one cultural is right or wrong, and none is superior to the other. Female Gentile Mutilation (FGM) is considered to cause harm to the individual, so based on this, any social benefit is considered secondary. FGM has no known health benefit. Therefore cultural relativism argument cannot be used as a cover for this harmful practice.

Any cultural practice that causes physical harm as well as exposes the woman to health risks should be condemned. FGM exposes the woman to painful childbirth and deprives her of sexual pleasure. A woman is tortured and butchered in the name of tradition. Does a woman not have the right over what happens to her body? They should never be forced to under go such painful cultural practice which only serve to subjugate and establish control over them.
